Gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, is a documented tic trigger for some people. Among those who notice a tic problem with gluten are an unknown percentage with celiac disease, as well as some others who have tested negative for the condition. People are sometimes confused when they notice they seem to feel better when they do not consume gluten or wheat, yet they do not have a diagnosis of celiac disease or wheat allergy.
