Antidepressants Can Double Bone Fractures
The popular drugs Celexa, Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, and Zoloft were included in a study done in Canada. For women over 50, the drugs were found to more than double the incidence of bone fractures. The higher the dose of the drug, the higher the incidence of fractures.
Given the millions of women prone to depression in this age group, and the debilitating effects of fractures, this finding is huge. Just as children are being targeted for ADHD medications, these antidepressants, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are often offered to the older generation.
This research made a splash on the news last month, then it went off the radar. Be sure to remember it, and remind your older relatives. All fractures are distressing, but a broken hip can trigger a downward spiral in health and vitality from which there is no return. How sad when such an event could have been avoided.
While depression should not be left untreated, there are natural alternative therapies. Unfortunately, most physicians are not aware of them.
