5 Smart Brain Breaks to Reduce ADHD Symptoms (Premium)
New research is in: Exercise helps kids with ADHD symptoms. Gee, did we really need research for something so obvious?
Apparently so, given that schools have been cutting recess and physical education (PE) from the school day for decades. At the same time, there is national hand-wringing about an increase in ADHD behaviors and obesity levels. Go figure.
One recent study on ADHD and exercise came from the University of Illinois and another from Michigan State University. Of course, if research results in less need for medication, we’re all for it.
We know that parents want recess for kids, teachers are forced to cope with restless students, and children want to get up from their desks and move–but the school schedule often doesn’t include this. As a result, more and more teachers are turning to short activity breaks, a practice proven to help achievement.
Whether 3 minutes or 5 minutes, a burst of exercise can make all the difference!
Brain breaks for kids at home and school
My daughter (15) is presently prescribed Lexapro for anxiety, Methylphenidate for ADHD and Trazadone for insomnia. We just switched the methylphenidate to Aderall today. She has lost 20 lbs. in two months ( not having weight to loose to begin with) with medications, wrist surgery, mono, flu and concussion. Needless to say she is struggling as I am too to help her. We see a physiologist and Dr. for medication.
We need to address her weight loss/physical health first I think, (?) by taking her off the ADHD medication which is the source of weight loss and insomnia. Maybe the insomnia would cease and meds wouldn’t be needed either? Everyday she is exhausted, agitated, sad and struggling with depression. I am worried about her mental / physical health, long term effects of medication and taking her off ADHD medication, but feel it is necessary. Hate the idea of sleeping pills for a 15 yr. old but she does not sleep without them while on ADHD medication. Also thinking of addressing gluten free diet and perhaps seeking out nutritionalist. Any thoughts ideas or suggestions ??? NEED to solve this and bring my daughter to some peace and comfort fast!
Hi FEEM, I really sympathize with the difficult situation you have with your daughter’s issues and medications. She’s really been through a lot–and you as well, as Mom.
It would be good for you to get some professional recommendations if you are hoping to take her off the meds because 1) getting advice is best when weaning off certain drugs 2) you need to have another plan in place to address symptoms.
Are you wanting to find an integrative physician who could help? Or a nutritionist? If so, let us know where you live please.
