Eye rolling tic - advice please - desperate mom
Chemar replied to JaneFBH's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi Jane I know nothing about Evolve kefir but would be a bit concerned if they add sugar?? The kefir we use is Lifeway plain and they use milk from type A2 beta casein producing cows so there is less of a chance for intolerance. Hereis more about that http://www.snowvillecreamery.com/a1-and-a2-beta-casein-in-cow-milk.html Also with kefir being a fermented product, most people do not have negative "dairy" reaction to it as they would with milk, cheese and other dairy products. If you child has a diagnosed dairy allergy then coconut kefir is a good alternative- 5 replies

Eye rolling tic - advice please - desperate mom
Chemar replied to JaneFBH's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi as different people respond in variable ways there is no fixed timeline to give other than that usually removing an offending substance shows pretty quickly. Remember kefir is in a different category that general "dairy"....... If it is seasonal allergies triggering the eye tics (which is a commonly reported issue) than you may want to try to use an anti-histamine and see if that helps. I prefer natural ones so as to reduce the chemical exposure from the conventional rx and otc products here are some good alternative natural anti-histamines http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/lifestyle-guide-11/allergies-allergy- 5 replies

Hi and welcome I can't post much now as working but the clothing sensitivity sounds like classic Sensory Integration Dysfunction aka Sensory Processing Disorder, which many kids with TS and other neuro disorders have. Often is is coupled with OCD where the "Have to" and "just right" come in.............. Sniffing is a tic, and may have sensitivity triggers that dont follow the classic "allergy" type...but may also be PANS related if there is an infection, so also worth looking into The Out Of Sync Child is a great book about sensory processings disorders http://out-of-sync-child.com/ Sheila Rogers' book Natural Treatments for Tics and Tourette's is an excellent resource http://latitudes.org/store/tics-tourettes-book/

Looking for guidance and support - my 8-year old son
Chemar replied to knav's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Just a word of caution that as with all supplements...not everyone responds the same way My son had great benefit from Taurine as well but we have had others here who had adverse reactions to it. re PANDAS....remember the categorization is now PANS to incorporate a lot more than strep! -
Coaching Little League for 10yr old with TS
Chemar replied to Jada77's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi how nice that you want to help this way. There are so many potential things that may be triggering the vocals! Yes, excitement/anxiety etc can trigger more tics, but so can pesticides/fertilizers on the field, the bright lights of night play or even what he ate earlier, or any snacks or drinks during the game that may have either artificial additives, or things he is sensitive to...etc etc etc. Even seasonal allergies could be playing a part. Coprolalia (which is what he may have been exhibiting) is one of the hardest vocal tics socially so hopefully this will pass quickly. There is some benefit in having a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It would be great if his parents start learning about what can trigger tics for him as that would go a long way to helping. -
Looking for guidance and support - my 8-year old son
Chemar replied to knav's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi and welcome the "massive home renovation" stood out like a red flag to me as their are so many potential triggers there....from uncovering or disturbing toxic old stuff to the many triggering things in new wood, new carpet, new paint etc etc So i would look into whether any of those are the reason the tics have ramped up. Also, as you mentioned the sinus problems and adenoids....have you ever looked into PANS/PANDAS? which is often associated with tics when a child has strep or other infections? -
Hello Marce and welcome I would suggest you read our Helpful Threads pinned to the top of this board and also so some searches on the forum to get ideas of what has helped others here. It really depends on what is causing your tics and OCD as to what will be most helpful to you.

Our experience is yes, you can have too much probiotic but then my son has Crohn's and so may react differently I have IBS and if I have too much kefir or mix it with other probiotics I do get an upset following. Remember too when you are dealing with candida "yeast" that you want to eradicate slowly as otherwise you can get intense herxing or "die off" .......where probiotics are no anti-fungal, they do increase the balance of good to bad microbes and so one can sometimes get a herx reaction

My son had a bad reaction to Nystatin as an antifungal and also to Culturelle & other supplemental probiotics so we use natural food probiotics only we find Kefir to be the best natural probiotic. We use the Lifeway brand as it is from A2 beta casein strain of cows. My son is not dairy intolerant but avoids it due to the Crohn's ...but finds this Lifeway kefir a major help to his health. My son likes the plain one, but you can also get blueberry and other totally natural flavored ones. Can be poured on cereal or taken as a drink, smoothie etc. http://www.lifeway.net Most supermarkets and health stores in our area carry it One can also get Kefir made from goat's milk as well as coconut milk kefir. Wholefoods has a good selection sauerkraut is also a good probiotic food.

If your child can tolerate Krill or Fish oil, then they really do provide excellent Omega 3 Borage and Flax are very good too. So it really is a matter of tolerance and personal preference. My son eats a lot of salmon so he gets good natural omega 3, but is one of those TS individuals who canno tolerate fish oil supplements. He used to use the flax/borage/evening primrose oil combo but now uses freshly ground flaxseeds sprinkled on his oatmeal/kefir/blueberries, and on salads, etc The only EPO I know of is the peptide hormone Erythropoietin? so am wondering if you meant EPA? which along with DHA, is found in fish oil.

I would be very cautious about contacting the TSA for doctor referrals as they tend to only give referrrals to physicians who use conventional treatments (ie rx drugs) and teamyoung is specifically looking for a doctor who approaches things from a more natural aspect.

The most important thing to look for in a therapist imo is that they have a caring and compassionate attitude. Avoid any who are domineering or that make you feel uncomfortable. I suggest the parent meet the therapist first and basically interview them to be sure you feel comfortable entrusting your child into their care. And obviously, a therapist with experience and qualifications in CBT as well as a working knowledgwe of TS/tics....and experience in using the modified CBT techniques recommended for children under 8yo

Hi Zinto Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be helpful with excitement and stress induced tics. Just to give you some encouragement, my son is now in his 20s and writes and performs his music, so is "on stage" frequently. Most people in the audience would not even know he has TS.

My son's Tics and Seasonal Allergies
Chemar replied to mgullion's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi Megan you should start seeing a clearcut improvement fairly soon if dairy is a trigger Have you looked at our Helpful Threads pinned to the top of the forum? Please keep us posted on how things progress. -
Hi Grandma and welcome though I am sorry it is concern for your grandson that brings you here. It is really good that you are educating yourself about integrative ways to help with TS as sadly the conventional medical treatments often do nothing and frequently make things worse when some types of medications are introduced. Do take a look at our Helpful Threads pinned to the top of this board (also linked below in my signature here)

US companies continue to harm US kids when they already have to use natural alternatives in the EU/UK!!! Worth listening to the broadcast embedded at the top of the article. http://hereandnow.wbur.org/2014/03/28/artificial-dyes-candy

Just wanted to mention that a product called Mastic Gum (aka Mastica) is one of the most effective methods of eradicating H.Pylori

Experience using CBT for OCD in Children
Chemar replied to RachelT's topic in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Hi Rachel my son has had CBT periodically for the OCD that is associated with his TS and it has been immensely beneficial. It is very important to find a therapist that your child and you feel comfortable with, and one who does not have a domineering approach. Sadly there are some therapists that want to change kids into their own image, or into something that THEY feel the child should be....rather than just helping the child be better at being themself! We had a brief experience with one of those and it was more detrimental than good! I suggest you interview the therapist first before allowing your child to start with them. -
Hi some people are triggered by any dental/orthodontic work.... but in some instances, which appear to be related to TMJ problems, it can actually help reduce tics. However, many have found that the metal mix braces are triggering. Not sure if you have the option to use the newer kinds that are not metallic? So a very hard question to answer as it really depends on the individual and what the actual causes of their tics are. If your child has been triggered in the past by dental work, be cautious imo
