Just now discovering PANS/PANDAS
rowingmom replied to CRD1995's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
The gut is a very important part of the immune system. For this reason we eat as organically as possible. Glyphosate may be responsible for killing important gut microbiota. http://nhrighttoknowgmo.org/BreakingNews/Glyphosate_II_Samsel-Seneff.pdf http://www.mdpi.com/1099-4300/15/4/1416 http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/02/04/roundup-glyphosate-toxicity.aspx?e_cid=20140204Z1_DNL_art_1&utm_source=dnl&utm_medium=email&utm_content=art1&utm_campaign=20140204Z1&et_cid=DM38971&et_rid=417896252 -
Did you find any improvement in cognitive/executive behaviour with babesia treatment? DD had some improvement with malarone, but had outstanding improvement with the herb cryptolepis. For DD, bartonella seemed to be the cause of most of the PANS symptoms, but unknown Babesia sp. was the cause of executive/cognitive problems.

If it does cause a flare in PANS symptoms I found them to be temporary and indicative of a die-off reaction which will resolve. Tindamax is strong and unlike combinations of other abx DD was prescribed, she wasn't able to detox through her tindamax herxes without taking days off. With any combination not including tindamax, we would see an initial increase in symptoms due to die-off. As we kept up our detox regimen (daily lemon juice, epsom salt baths, psyllium husk, LOTS of water, magnesium and probiotic supplementation) the reaction would resolve within 7-10 days and remain at baseline until the next change in protocol. The addition of tindamax to the protocols just caused ramping of symptoms (for DD they were long bone pain, motor/vocal ticcing, emotional lability, decrease in fine motor ability) with no resolution. For this reason our LLMD started pulsing the tindamax combos. 3-4 days on everything and then 4-3 days off. With these breaks in treatment DD was able to recover during off days. After 1 month's worth of pulsing I noticed a decline in the level of herxing. The initial herxes with each pulse continued to decline, until when DD wasn't really herxing too much any more, we decided to wean. The LLMD wanted to discontinue treatment at that point, but I was not convinced that we had achieved full remission. For that reason we continue with herbal protocols. If your doctor is thinking about using tindamax, I would suggest pulsing, especially for children. It really does pack a wallop. Be prepared for the first couple of doses, but know that the symptoms are die-off related. Reassure your son when he sees this happening that it's temporary. Allow time for detoxing. Chart symptoms against protocol - you will see all of this happening in the graph. A-L complex did nothing for DD. A-Bart caused herx symptoms, but after 6 months of high dose A-Bart (30 drops 3x daily along with abx combos) we still weren't rid of bartonella. For us, 3 months of Cowden did nothing (no herxing no improvement), 1.5 years of A-L (20 drops 3x daily) did nothing (no herxing, no improvement). 1.5 years of A-Bart caused herxing (and still does) but no improvment - so I have given up on it. DD had serious reactions to GrapeFruitSeed extract which is supposed to be a natural cyst buster. Here are my thoughts on that: http://latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=22660&hl= We are seriously doing better now on Buhner's Bartonella/babesia protocols than we ever did with abx. Whether the initial abx were needed to lower bacterial loads before we began the herbs, I'm not sure. Buhner seems to think that this may be the case for many people.

DD had many silly and foolish age-regressive behaviours before her abx treatment began 3 years ago. She also was continuously itchy "down there" which our PCP diagnosed as normal for her age and which would resolve when she started monthly cycling. He was also the one that stated lyme/bart was impossible - have I ever mentioned I will never return to that doctor again ? When we began treatment we also began approx. 75 billion mixed probiotic cultures daily (a rotation of Align, Culturelle, ReNewLife UltimateFlora, PB8). The age regression quickly resolved, as did the itching. She never had any other indications of yeast throughout abx treatment, so I'm not sure if the silliness/itching was due to bacterial infection or to yeast which would have been addressed with the probiotics. When we weaned abx 1 year ago and began Buhner's bartonella/babesia herbal protocols I mistakenly assumed that herbs would not disturb gut microbiota. I stopped dosing probiotic supplements, instead relying on fermented vegetables (mostly homemade sauerkraut) for healthy bacteria. With higher doses of herbs however DD started experiencing yeast infection - red circles under her eyes, increased motor ticcing and some emotional lability. As soon as the itching started again I knew it was yeast and so reinitiated the probiotic supplements. They helped a bit but after 4 days I gave up and gave her 1x 500 mg diflucan. The next day all yeast symptoms started resolving and within 3 days itching was better, ticcing had gone, under her eyes was clear and she was no longer emotional. I didn't discontinue antimicrobial herbs. We now continue with daily probiotic supplementation as per abx treatment and fermented vegetable ingestion, along with the full antimicrobial herbal protocol and DD has had no relapse of her yeast symptoms. DD is not carb restricted. We eat fermented oats a couple times a week, and 1 serving of either white rice or potatoes (cooked and cooled, then rewarmed) with dinner every day. She has 1 apple and 1 banana daily and we also eat plenty of carrots and beets. We do restrict sugar and processed foods. Resistant starches may be necessary for proper growth of healthy microflora: http://drbganimalpharm.blogspot.ca/2013/12/how-to-cure-sibo-small-intestinal-bowel.html This is the last post of a series of 7 on healing small intestinal bowel overgrowth, which can be bacterial or fungal in nature, and which should be helpful in addressing yeast overgrowth in the gut.

Credit Card Suggestions Please
rowingmom replied to trintiybella's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I'm not sure about 0% interest, but there are cards that pay yearly dividends, depending on how much you have spent using the card. I'm Canadian so ours are probably a bit different. -
Just now discovering PANS/PANDAS
rowingmom replied to CRD1995's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Wow! A Psych major with an understanding of infection-related psych/neuro symptoms. You could change everything for struggling children and their parents! Best of luck with your tonsillectomy. -
Symptom tracker systems? Lyme disease cycle?

I have to give LLM full credit for the Excel spreadsheet and stacked bar chart. I originally got it from her. I only added the colours . -
Just now discovering PANS/PANDAS
rowingmom replied to CRD1995's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I don't have much advice for you because our daughter's neurological/psychological presentation was more Tourette's/ADHD with little OCD involvement, but I am so glad that you have been able to associate your OCD episodes with infection. DD's PANS reactions were caused by bartonella infection, one of the several possible lyme coinfections. A huge leap past the mainstream paradigm! The archives are a great source of information. Welcome to the forum! -
For me too - crazy! Maybe too many people were trying to read it. That would be good!

It's not working for me either now - it did this morning. And it doesn't seem to matter where I try to access it from. There are several sites citing the paper, but they all use the same link. I did find this however: http://monsantoblog.com/tag/glyphosate/ Got to wonder..... Try this one: http://groups.csail.mit.edu/sls/publications/2013/Seneff_Entropy-15-01416.pdf I have saved a copy to the hard drive of my computer if that one doesn't work. Here is a link to an interview with Dr Seneff on Mercola: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/04/15/glyphosate-health-effects.aspx

Thank you all for the notes. 3bmom alerted me to Stephanie Seneff's work and I think she is right on the money about glyphosate and GMOs. Our grandparent's generation were fine, ate gluten/grains and didn't seem to have the difficulties with autoimmune/celiac diseases we do. Something is going on, and it's not genetics. http://nhrighttoknowgmo.org/BreakingNews/Glyphosate_II_Samsel-Seneff.pdf http://www.mdpi.com/1099-4300/15/4/1416 Thanks also for the link to MomsAcrossAmerica. The website looks like a good one!

This is probably not the same link, because they do mention PANS/PANDAS, but it might be similar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbEM2OVM2kU

Anti-inflammatory diet....swapping resources thread
rowingmom replied to Mayzoo's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
According to paleo adherants, the lectins in legumes (including peanuts) are can be problematic for the gut. We are not low carb however. The diet we follow is: http://perfecthealthdiet.com/ to which I have added soaked/fermented oats as well. -
Increased tics after stopping Nystatin
rowingmom replied to JenniferG's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
In Feb 2012 DD had a huge increase in motor/vocal ticcing with low dose GSE (2 drops daily on the toothbrush for 5 days) suggested by the LLMD to address plaque formation on her teeth. It was horrible. She had trouble both speaking and reading because of the eye rolling, head jerking and vocals. It took weeks of increased dosages of curcumin and japanese knotweed (anti-inflammatories) to resolve. For DD ticcing caused by GSE was worse than the ticcing caused by tindamax. The LLMD thought it might be yeast die-off; Stephen Buhner's herbalist associate thought GSE may have been causing inactivation of cytochrome P450, decreasing the liver's ability to metabolize existing toxins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapefruit_juice In Feb of this year DD was again starting to show signs of ticcing with higher doses of herbs used in Buhner's bartonella/babesia protocols. Two days later she developed a yeast infection. Not realizing that herbs could have a significant impact on gut flora I had stopped probiotic supplementation, using only fermented vegetables to supply microflora. I increased probiotics for a couple of days, but this did nothing for the ticcing or yeast infection. I finally relented and gave her a single oral dose of diflucan. The yeast and ticcing were both gone within 2 days, with no yeast die-off- related increase in ticcing symptoms. I now have to agree with the herbalist - that GSE had somehow impared DD's ability to excrete toxins, thereby increasing ticcing. I saw no increase in ticcing associated with diflucan induced yeast die-off, or any other symptoms for that matter. The ticcing simply disappeared to zero along with the dark red circles under her eyes. I have since reinstated the full probiotic supplementation protocols we were using while on abx treatment. Ticcing has remained at zero, except for a couple weeks in March, where (after reading a post by LLM on black mold around windows caused ticcing in her son), I discovered mold around DD's bedroom windows. A good cleaning with vinegar resolved all ticcing once again. -
Make an informed decision, do not trust your PCP to make it for you. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2009/11/14/expert-pediatrician-exposes-vaccine-myths.aspx http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/vaccines-and-immunological-products From the link directly above: Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and varicella-zoster vaccines should be avoided if immunity is significantly impaired (see 'Immunodeficiency and live vaccines', below). Immunodeficiency and live vaccines Live vaccines should not be given to:[2] Patients actively being treated for malignancy (chemotherapy, generalised radiotherapy). Patients within six months of such treatment. Transplant patients on immunosuppressive drugs. Patients within six months of bone marrow transplant. Within three months of adults receiving 40 mg/day of prednisolone for more than a week. Within three months of children receiving certain doses of prednisolone (2 mg/kg/day for one week or 1 mg/kg/day for one month). When steroids and immunosuppressive drugs are being given together (the specialist in charge should be consulted). Patients with impaired cell-mediated immunity or immunodeficiency syndromes such as DiGeorge's syndrome and severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/04/26/vaccines-adverse-reaction.aspx From the link directly above: Overvaccination not only exposes people to potentially dangerous adverse reactions, but it may damage the health of the greater community. Take varicella zoster (chickenpox), for example. According to Dr. Humphries:12 "Prior to the universal varicella vaccination program, 95 percent of adults experienced natural chickenpox (usually as school aged children)—these cases were usually benign and resulted in long term immunity. This high percentage of individuals having long term immunity has been compromised by mass vaccination of children, which provides at best 70 to 90 percent immunity that is temporary and of unknown duration—shifting chickenpox to a more vulnerable adult population where chickenpox carries 20 times more risk of death and 15 times more risk of hospitalization compared to children. Add to this the adverse effects of both the chickenpox and shingles vaccines, as well as the potential for increased risk of shingles for an estimated 30 to 50 years among adults." A young child with active chickenpox, who comes into contact with an adult who had chickenpox as a child, is giving the adult a natural "booster" that will not cause symptoms but will strengthen the adult's immunity to the disease. But since the introduction of the chickenpox vaccine in 1995 in the US, followed by chickenpox vaccine mandates in the states, there are fewer natural boosters for the adult population. Now, there is a shingles (herpes zoster) epidemic among adults – and Merck is the sole producer of both chickenpox and shingles vaccine in the US!

"Natural" Antibiotics/Antivirals
rowingmom replied to JenniferG's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
After using Buhner's bartonella protocol (houttuynia, sida acuta, japanese knotweed, garlic, ginger, curcumin) for approx 8 months, and then adding a combination cryptolepis/sida/alchornea tincture, DD started having reoccurrances of yeast infection. Up until that point I had thought supplementing with fermented vegetables would be sufficient, but we ended up having to resume the probiotic supplements we used during abx treatment to get a handle on the yeast. So yes, herbs can be very antibiotic in their actions. That's why we take them, right?- 3 replies

We have never tested DD for MycoP, although my husband develops respiratory symptoms every winter, returns positive and is given 4 days of biaxin. If he relapses he is given 7. No use going overboad treating! Got to love our PCP. DD was treated with biaxin/rifampin for 1.5 years for lyme/bart and is now using Buhner's bartonella/babesia protocol - which would of course address mycoplasma as well. The herbal constituents are very broadly acting. She has never had a cough, but as dedee mentioned the infection does not necessarily effect only the lungs. Buhner lists different herbal protocols to address the possible symptom presentations: Urinary tract, cervical dysplasia, lung infection, severe anemia or RBC lysis, hemoplasma or intracellular RBC infection, brain/CNS involvement, nerve destruction, neural pain, fatigue, joint involvement, wasting. Stephen Buhner - Healing Lyme Coinfections: Complementary and Holistic Treatments for Bartonella and Mycoplasma I'm glad to hear you are finding further improvement for your DD.

Pandas? Frequent urination & repetitive wiping, etc
rowingmom replied to pome's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Frequent urination was one of DD's PANS symptoms as well. In her case PANS was caused by bartonella infection. Her teachers were quite insistant that she had UTIs, but results always returned negative. -
For us vocal ticcing was the result of toxin overload. DD had ticcing flares, both motor and vocal, resulting from antibiotic induced bartonella die-off. Mold and yeast can also cause ticcing problems for her. For this reason we eat organic food - to decrease pesticide toxins as well.

Pans and started with Integrative MD~ seeking feedback
rowingmom replied to Thesuzie's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
http://lymemd.blogspot.ca/2009/02/understanding-western-blot.html http://www.anapsid.org/lyme/wb.html kDa 39 is specific only to borrellia. Most LLMDs would consider any reaction on this band indicative of lyme infection. If your daughter has not been tested specifically for the coinfections (bartonella, babesia, ehrlichia, mycoplasma, RMSF) she should be. The PANDAS (caused by strep) specialists are not educated on Tick Borne Diseases. Please find someone who is. -
azithromycin for young children? lyme
rowingmom replied to stacestar's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
DD took azithromycin for 7 months at the end of her abx treatment. For the first three months she was taking 250mg QD daily with minocycline and malarone. For the last 4 months she took it in a pulsed protocol with mino/malarone/plaquinel/tindamax. I was nervous too when I heard about the possible heart complications, but we went ahead. At least you know to keep an eye out for heart symptoms. Palpitations and dizziness were part of DD's original symptom presentation. These quickly cleared on her initial abx protocol (biaxin/rifampin/A-Bart/A-L). We saw no sign of these or other heart involvement on azithromycin. -
ie, bartonella, babesia, powassan virus.

Where to interpret raw data from 23andme?
rowingmom replied to jph's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Go back to the Members listing and I think you will find LLM answered these questions a while back. I can't tell you specifically because we have never run 23andme. -
I have found that my gut instinct often leads me in the right direction; after all we have first hand experience with how our kids react to things. Would Bradstreet be OK with trying the fecal transplant first, and then if that doesn't work giving Bravo a try. And then if that doesn't work you can sell it back?
