yes. there is quite a lot of discussion in past threads here on this. Candida overgrowth can increase tics and trigger other stuff too eradicating candida seems to have helped many, according to the anecdotal reports here over the years

Mecamylamine for tic control? Anyone heard of this
Chemar replied to keeptrying's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
the Tourette syndrome association has funded quite a bit of research showing nicotine helps diminish tics. unfortunately, nicotine also has negative effects on some other things so one has to weight the pros and cons. eg it aggravates Crohn's and other GIT disorders I also think it may be illegal to use any form of nicotine in someone under 18? -
The Treatments that have Helped My Son
Chemar replied to Chemar's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
He has successfully added fresh limes to his diet as another help for OCD (added to salmon & avocado, and also lemon balm and rose hip teas daily) We learned limes are very high in natural inositol. Plus they have other health properties. He has added these carefully in moderation as he does have to be careful of citrus upsetting Crohn's we found an interesting list of foods rich in inositol. Do be careful with grapefruit if you are on meds and some supps as it can alter their absorption. Also some people really cant tolerate much citrus, so even tho limes, oranges and grapefruit are very high in inositol, go slow and balanced! note too how high cantaloupe is ! http://www.associate...udes.html?cat=5 http://www.ajcn.org/...t/33/9/1954.pdf -
Does anyone else feel the fall is worse?
Chemar replied to ilovedogs's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
my son actually seems to always improve once we are past harvest moon, though there are those mysterious waxes and wanes that do sometimes happen when least expected! He actually seemed to have a very stable harvest moon phase this year, as opposed to many previous years. His overall diet and teas etc are really keeping him in a good place. re the moon, many neurological conditions seem to have waxing at full moon, not just the ones caused by parasites. -
Friends of mine have been struggling with family health for quite sometime, and are dealing with Lyme, amongst other things! Debbie will likely be posting here in the future, but for now she has given her blessing to me sharing the links here to their family facebook page: Prayer for The Derricks, that gives their family health history and treatments, and also their daughter's Caring Bridge site, documenting her illness and where she is at now. Such a courageous young lady! Here is the message from Debbie

Hi Rick sorry things are usually quieter here over weekends, so more responses will likely come Monday as well.... I cant post long now, but have a link in my signature below on what helped my (now adult) son. I started that thread in 2003 when he was 2 years into the natural treatments and recently updated it again that link you see with the TS & OCD is what is known as tourettic OCD, when tics and OCD kinda "morph" into each other, and seems to always be the most troublesome symptom for many people with TS.
-
good to hear your positive results there CP
-
Hi although many people with TS only have tics as their symptoms, from my experience, the vast majority have OCD as well. Please dont think that your son must have either TS/OCD *OR* PANDAS....it is very possible for someone who has tourette/OCD to ALSO have PANDAS

the book link leads me to an error page?

Forcing PE while they are so exhausted?
Chemar replied to pixiesmommy's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
If you have a 504 plan, you can ask the doctor to write a letter that the child should be excused from PE whenever it becomes too much for them, to the point of impacting their illness -
Twitching, spasms, and muscle tightening
Chemar replied to mom2ck's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi where I agree that you may have problems with leaky gut and candida etc, it seems very clear from the test results that your physicians have run that you are also dealing with neurological symptoms as a result of the nerve damage found. It can only be helpful to try to clear candida and heal your gut, but I dont think it is realistic to see this as *the* issue at this time, as your testing indicates a neurological problem. Try to continue to add dietary and supplemental agents that are healing to the nervous system as well. You have a good start with what you are already taking. Do some searches here and on Google for others. I hope the follow up testing shows it to be improving -
yes, one can still get candida problems and also die off/herxing reactions with natural antibiotics. we were advised to still take probiotics, again natural ones like kefir and organic yoghurt (Stoneyfield farms)
-
negative effects rather than nothing is what I recall being mentioned. But this was some years ago and I do not know if the protocol now is still the same as it was then. I know Claire reported her son had a very bad experience with it
-
we were advised against it by our physician years ago. I dont know if what they do now is the same technique. so we never tried it, although we did successfully use biofeedback, which is very different in the past, parents trying neurofeedback gave negative reports here

even a 1/4 cup of bleach in a tub would be enough to trigger some major neuro reactions in a susceptible person. I cannot do laundry with it or use it in household cleaners and my son quit (his choice) chlorine pools years ago. We even have special filters on faucets if you could witness how my son reacts to chlorine, even a TINY amount, you would possibly understand why this is a caution that needs to be voiced. And a search on the TS forum would show you that there are many other kids with similar sensitivity to it. For some kids, the reaction can be very dramatic and not just an increase in mild tics. just because a doctor is an expert on one thing, does not mean they necessarily have all the info on other things...that is understandable. And as I stated in my first post, no one is doubting that this would help to control strep and staph ...just that the trade off may be intense too! I would still urge parents to be very careful about using any bleach in bath water without first being sure it isn't going to trigger skin reactions (my son gets hives from it) and possibloe neurological reactions, including increased tics. The white vinegar sounds a good alternative
-
my son gets his via one cup of organic green tea daily enough to feel the calminative effect , but not to experience any dopaminergic fallout :-)
-
sorry but I do just have to mention here that I think this is not something to be done without great caution, especially if the child has tics Chlorine is known to trigger neurological stuff for many kids, especially those who have TS. I realize there are differences in how treatment should be approached in different conditions, but there is just too much anecdotal evidence on chlorine triggering especially tics not for me to mention this. I am sure Dr L is spot on in terms of her suggestion that it helps help re the staph and strep. I am not questioning that. But just mentioning that where it may get rid of the germs, it also has the potential to trigger some symptoms like tics so just be careful ....and be googled up in terms of the other potentially hazardous effects of the chlorine as well!

New here, have a question about 'tics'
Chemar replied to Secret Agent Man's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi and welcome we discuss many different kinds of tics here, from those associated with Tourette Syndrome (motor and vocal tics) to mild transient tic disorders so there may be differences in how these tics manifest, just as there are differences in what triggers them from my understanding, BFS manifest somewhat differently than tics as it involves muscle contraction/relaxation rather than actual movements or sounds however, you will find a lot of info here on diet and other things to help improve overall health and reduce tics -
actually the thread is 7 years old most of those posters have not been here in a long time...hopefully because they are doing so well

Chelation therapy DMSA and vocal tics / Coprolalia
Chemar replied to Ivan C's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi and welcome yes we have quite a lot of discussion here about the need to get rid of heavy metal and other toxins it does not "cure" TS, but it sure does help a lot my TS son had high mercury, and used the herbal supplement Chlorella followed by a short course alpha lipoic acid We saw improvement fairly soon and it was I think about 3 months total on the treatment. He also had accompanying acupuncture and biofeedback (NOT neurofeedback!) to assist in the detox And the Epsom Salts baths were a great help with the magnesium in them calming tics and the sulfate aiding the detox process I hope you will also read about the many other triggers that can be eliminated or reduced to help with tics. I have a link in my signature about what helped my son and other members here also have their own stories of what helps. btw, often when you have to do tics to get them "just right" that is known as Tourettic OCD, a type of OCD that seems unique to TSers, where tics and OCD sometimes "morph" into each other -
The Treatments that have Helped My Son
Chemar replied to Chemar's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
just updating that my son (almost 21 years old) is basically now using only his diet and incorporating special teas, and only a few pill supplements, to treat the TS tics, Tourettic OCD, and Crohn's. He has reduced the supplements drastically since my last update! ------------------------------- the only pill/capsule nutritional supplements he is still taking are:- ROYAL JELLY (he has switched to NOW's 1000mg gelcap 2x daily) (for general nutrition as a "multi" supp & source of B vitamins. There are so many all purpose benefits, from nutritional to antimicrobial, in Royal Jelly, made by the worker bees to feed the queen and baby bees) My son is using it as a multi purpose supplement in conjunction with RAW ORGANIC HONEY NOW vitamin D3 Oil caps (general health and aids neurology) NOW Boswellin (Boswellia with Curcumin extract & Turmeric Powder (anti inflammatory etc mainly for the Crohn's but also has positive impact on OCD and other health benefits) DGL-LIQUORICE losenges (vitamin shoppe) to help heal his GIT. Essential Crohn's, IBD, leaky gut supp) SLIPPERY ELM bark to provide protective coating for GIT. also has other health properties ------------------------------ The nutritional organic teas he is using are: ROSE HIP (Alvita) for multi properties, rich in many essential nutrients PEPPERMINT & GINGER (Alvita) for anti-inflammatory and digestive properties CHAMOMILLE for general health and as a calminative for neurology and GIT LEMON BALM (Celebrations Herbal) for remarkable properties in keeping OCD, anxiety etc subdued GREEN TEA (Prince of Peace) mainly for the theanine that helps neurology, but also for the long list of nutritional & health benefits) ----------------------- His DIET is very strict for the Crohn's mainly (he went totally organic, pure, and additive/preservative free years ago for the neurology with major benefits He is now totally gluten and dairy free, not because of testing allergic, but due to the tremendous benefit it has on the Crohn's He follows the basic ideas of the Anti-inflammatory diet recommended by Dr Andrew Weil ( http://www.drweil.co...flammatory-diet ) with adaptations for the fact that he has Crohn's, and has chosen to go dairy and gluten free. The post above this one details some of the foods that he feels are absolutely essential to his overall health and nutritional needs re the neurology and Crohn's uses the *raw honey* liberally and finds it remarkable how it calms anxiety too! and of course it has great antimicrobial and nutritional properties. also uses organic MAPLE SYRUP ( I was amazed to learn its health and healing proeprties beyond just that it tastes good !) Spices= CINNAMON & GINGER & Garlic & Turmeric for many reasons ---------------------------------------------- EPSOM SALTS bath or footbath daily Jasmine & Lavender & Clove & peppermint oils for assorted aromatherapy health properties. (finding jasmine especially remarkable for OCD, anxiety, depression etc) so that is it :-) minimal supplements and mainly food and teas to meet his neurology and digestive, immuno and anti-inflamm health needs. -
Hi Carolyn good for you for still nursing! In fact, it is only in modern times that people nurse for such short periods and in more traditional cultures, it is not unusual to have a 2 & 3 yo still nursing, even tho yes, they have begun with gradual solid foods. I am a vocal advocate for breastfeeding for as long as possibly into toddlerhood! As long as the mom is staying healthy and on a good diet, there is no better start, and then supplement, for those early years than mother's milk picky eating could be related to the sensory dysfunction, but sometimes can also be the body giving messages about what it likes and doesn't, so it is a fine line between encouraging him with more foods for the sake of his health, and also letting him decline what he does not like. I think the key is to just start experimenting with many foods and vary the way you prepare them for him. he may not like it one way but love it another...my kids are still like that! You can also finely chop into something he likes and see how he responds? my oldest son was a lot pickier than my son with TS, who does also have sensory integration dysfunction.

help for newbie--TS or Pandas, or both?
Chemar replied to eljomom's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
try to avoid any magnesium oxide products as they are a waste of your money and do not get well absorbed, so also not very efficient -
help for newbie--TS or Pandas, or both?
Chemar replied to eljomom's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
oh how we all wish there were more docs as you are seeking!! They are few and far between, especially as related to PANDAS, and most docs who do know about TS, take the conventional approach of trying meds or doing nothing and yup, although the TSA is very good in some areas, they are not helpful or knowledgable when it comes to PANDAS and close to useless when it comes to alternative treatments for TS. Natural Calm is magnesium citrate. http://www.iherb.com...454-g/5121?at=0 They also make a Kids Calm that has some added vit C and zinc http://www.iherb.com...226-g/5120?at=0 the Natural Vitality product line has been expanded to cover more bases, and they now make Natural Calm with calcium and magnesium If your child is not dairy intolerant and consumes these products, they may already be getting in sufficient calcium Have you seen our admin, Sheila Roger's book? It is a very helpful reference to help you sort though all this stuff http://www.latitudes.org/book.html
