Hi and welcome just bumping your post up for others to find it -
Hi and welcome have you heard of PANDAS? it can mimic Tourette but is actually a different disorder, caused by strep? here is more info for you to check http://www.pandasnetwork.org Is there a family history of Tourette? If not, it really is worth checking into other possible causes, especially PANDAS We have a Helpful Threads section at the top of this forum with lots of good information hope that helps a bit

Son's tics exploding, trying to figure out what to do
Chemar replied to Bigal's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
I don't think either of those meds can be used that way...they need to be consistently taken or there can be more problems as the body adjusts to their chemicals and then experiences withdrawal when they are removed, which can be dangerous...at least that is the way most tic meds work, so I am assuming these are also that way -
Son's tics exploding, trying to figure out what to do
Chemar replied to Bigal's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
oh ok so he was taking that probiotic before and now is back on it? I thought it was one that had been absent from his system a long time. Well, yes, a change in probiotics could have caused a subtle change in his system...and as we know with TS kids, sometimes even tiny changes can have enormous results! If he tolerated it before then he is likely ok with those ingredients...the probiotics are fine but I know my son cannot handle sorbitol or xylitol or malate and he also has frustose malabsorption so we avoid it as any kind of additive in all forms...but that does not mean your child is sensitive to those things. I guess the thing to do is document this for future reference Thankful for you that it appears to be on the wane -
Not only OCD but severe confusion!
Chemar replied to MamaOnAMission's topic in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Hi you may want to post this on the Lyme board here as the OCD that comes with infection triggers can be very different from "regular" OCD, which is what this section is mainly for I can tell you that when my son (who has TS) used to get severe OCD, it did impact his normal functioning -

Chemar replied to Bigal's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
what is in that probiotic? if using it correlates with the increase in tics...you may have found the trigger! glad things have settled remember too that sometimes with TS, waxing and waning can occur and you may never know why....it has been suggested it may be some "internal" trigger, maybe hormonal or a subtle shift in the dopamine dynamic? -

yes Al a child can have PANDAS induced tics without showing symptoms of strep throat. You may want to check our PANDAS forum here and also look at http://www.pandasnetwork.org Many here have had success with BonTech for tics, but some did not, as some people may be sensitive to some of the ingredients. We never used them, but I did base my son's treatment on Bonnie's plan (see my signature link) -

fish oil increased tics for my son too and many others with TS have reported the same we only use flaxseed oil now, along with salmon as the fish Omega 3 source the allergy shot could have been a trigger...depends what is in it? I am admittedly biased because of my son's horrid experience on meds, but if you feel they were needed, I hope you at least see improvement and no bad side effects -
that high dose of Inositol is only supposed to be used in OCD crisis and short term using high doses longterm can start having a negative effect. Optimum regular daily dose is usually around 1gm as it is a B vitamin, it likely does have a positive effect on tics too, but I have not heard of it being specifically suggested to reduce tics, according to this site there is no real data on libido, tho some sites say a slight damping but nothing like with SSRIs http://www.raysahelian.com/inositol.html

PANDAS symtom came back every 4 weeks

hi and welcome moving your post up so others can reply -
Hi and welcome back Tourette disorder is described as a syndrome and so yes, it can encompass all or some of the other things you describe. It can also manifest as just tics, simple or complex. I am not sure which doctors say it is only tics? as they are not being accurate! When my son was first diagnosed, we were clearly told about the assorted disorders that can be co-morbid in the syndrome.

Prozac making her insomnia worse.
Chemar replied to MamaOnAMission's topic in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Hi Lilly I am not sure what the prozac was diagnosed for...but I can say that when my son was given Luvox (a similar SSRI to prozac) everything became far far worse for him, and it was not improved till we weaned him off it. I have heard other reports that some kids just do not tolerate these SSRIs well -

need calcium and magnesium supplements
Chemar replied to tstryker's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi there are a number of companies that make good combination calcium/magnesium supplements, and also make them separate and one tab a day would satisfy the dose required The only ones to avoid are mag oxide (poorly absorbed) and cal carbonate (can be contaminated if from oyster shells ) iherb.com has a good selection in a wide price range, and they list all the ingredients -
Will Reducing OCD Help Alleviate the Tics?

Hi Perrine I have merged your two threads as it is much easier to keep a sinlge topic together and means others replying don't repeat what has already been suggested -
Will Reducing OCD Help Alleviate the Tics?
Chemar replied to Perrine's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
OCD is frequently co-morbid with TS and is documented as such PANDAS/PITAND induced tics manifest most frequently along with neuropsychiatric symptoms, the most common being OCD Can you elaborate on these two statements a bit? Thanks. -
Hi Carolyn sorry to hear of the head jerking tic. yes, steroids are known tic triggers and so maybe the progesterone is what is causing this? With hormones, even subtle changes in one can affect others. If nothing else has changed, and the head tic started after you began the prog...that may be the cause.

Will Reducing OCD Help Alleviate the Tics?
Chemar replied to Perrine's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi Perrine yes, infections like strep can trigger tics.....but so can many other things that are not infection related. So it is a good idea to explore all possibilities. There is a very helpful reference book that may be worth reading http://www.latitudes.org/book.html Here is an article on Triggers for Tics http://www.latitudes.org/articles/finding_triggers.htm (the lists are at the end of the article) You may also benefit from looking at some of our Helpful Threads http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2459 Using supplements has proved very beneficial for many people but it really does depend on what the root cause of the tics are! If indeed it is an infection trigger, then although supplements may be good overall, they are not getting to the main problem of eradicating the infectious agent eg strep/antibiotics etc Similarly, if the tics are related to allergies etc etc etc The fact that there is possible OCD or intrusive thoughts with the tics may indicate Tourette Syndrome. Infection triggered tics frequently also manifest with OCD, so it really is worth taking a deeper look at the possible PANDAS or PITAND connection generally, magnesium and B vitamins are found to be helpful for tics. There are also supplements that can help OCD, but again, the root cause should first be investigated. -
