UPDATE: Tourette's Syndrome and Sleep Apnea
Cum Passus replied to dweinst3's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
David, I will have my husband post tonight when he gets home from work. He just finished using a 24 hour heart monitor. He and his Dr. talked about him having sleep apnea. He can tell you more of what they talked about. Is your Dr. in Baltimore? or is John Hopkins School of Medicine in another state? We live about 70 miles from Baltimore. Just wondering, because My husband could make that drive for a study. Thanks for the info, C.P. -
Calicat, I don't have any theorys about the food, but my son for a while did some odd tics at mealtime. Then he just stopped for a couple days, then he would start it up again. I was always trying to find out why he did this. He would do this at other times too, not just at mealtimes. When my mom would come over he would have a really bad vocal ticcing spell. Also when we would pray as a family he would go nuts with the vocals. They would stop once we were done with the prayers. (so strange) I really never put my finger on it, but thought maybe he was doing this because of things exciting him. Not sure about the prayers I know that does not excite him. At this time he does not do this anymore. (thankfully) My husband said he saw on TV a story about food exciting a neurotransmitter in the brain of a person who loved to eat. I thought for a while maybe that was causing the increase in tics. After all he is 13 and food seems to be all that is on his mine. The only thing we have seen our son go nuts over was a B complex and fish oil. Tics were right away with the fish oil, and lasted a few hours. The B complex it was the next day, and really really bad. Hope someone else will have some input I would like to hear more about this. C.P.

Mary, I think most people here like the kids calm because it is one less pill for their kids to take. And the fast absorbtion seems to benefit most kids here. I'm not sure I can help with your other questions, but I'm wondering about the flouride. Why did your Dr. prescribe that? I would find out what other stuff is in that multi. Can you call someone to find out? If you can I would get a multi vit that is made of whole foods. I have not been able to find one yet for my son because he can't do rice at this time. Sorry if I wasn't much help. C.P.

Daniel, My mom caught lyme in the early stages, and her Dr. said if caught early lyme is about 95% curable. Eating food rich in Vit C will help with the flulike symptoms. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. Is this the same child who has TS? If so hopefully he already has a built up immunity. I couldn't tell from your post if you have been to the Dr. yet? Would love to hear what they say. My 15 year old's best friend has just found out she has lyme. apparently she has had it for a long time. So far she has done really well on the treatment her Dr. has her on. I wish I had more info for you. God Bless, C.P.

Faith, DARN!!! I could have had you rolling on the floor for 10 min, had I thought about having my right nipple pierced. C.P.

Petb, WOW!!!! That explains a lot about my own childhood. I had very bad allergies to food as a kid. I would scratch my arms and legs while I was sleeping. It would drive my sister crazy. I also would get a nose bleed when the wind changed direction. When I was in the 3rd grade my teacher told my parents I was retarded, and I spent a week in the hospital having my brain scanned. When it was all over the DR. told my mom to tell the teachers they were retarded, there was nothing wrong with me. (had to repeat the 3rd grade anyway) I went through school doing so poorly failing some classes. By the time I got to high school I think my teachers pushed me along because I was a nice girl. College wasn't much better. I felt so let down by the school system that is partly why I homeschooled my kids. I tell you what I learned more homeschooling then I ever did in school. (humm food I wonder...) I must have outgrown these food allergies because I do not have these rashes anymore. I know I'm still dyslexic, but do believe it is better then it was when I was younger. Tho my husband would tell you different he hates it when I give directions. (don't know my left from my right) I point... drives him nuts. Maybe I should get my right eyebrow pierced, that could help with the left/right problem... hey C.P.

Hi Mary, So glad you found us. My husband Has TS and so does our son, not sure about our youngest daughter yet. I wanted to tell you my husband faught me on the food allergy because our son ate all kinds of foods that are big no- nos. My husband eats junk when he can get away with it. He has almost no tics. We did have our son tested and found out he has a corn allergy and when i when shopping to find food without corn all I could do was cry walking down the food isles, as corn was in so much food. My son does the same thing about baseball, sometimes about school work too. I do believe stress plays a huge part. I think the change in his diet has helped with the stress. Try to see what you can do about what you think might be causing stress. (easier said then done) Your story sounds so much like mine when my son was your son's age. The TV, videos, soda, and sports. My son only had a kissing noise when he was nine (13 now) not any motor tics though. Read up on the diet suggestions here. I think cheese- nips, or mayby it is cheese- zits one of those has BHT or one of the other bad preservatives. I hope you see some results soon since you have been dealing with this for so long. A little incouragement from my son, he thinks pitchers are priceless, and the hitting will come in time. My son could not hit worth beans, but is a great fielder, and loves the game. Baseball has been his saving grace. At 13 my son can now see what truly makes a great ball player, and we hardly ever hear him cut himself down anymore. Keep being supportive you may not see the fruits of your labor, but one day it will click, and he'll see it. Good luck C.P.

Calicat, My husband said if the mold is not too bad you could cut the drywall out yourself. But you must find the water source, and check the wood studs for mold. How his co. does it is they seal off the room with a negative air chamber, pump air outside, and use Hepa vacuumes. My husband said to call a co like servicemaster have them give you a written estimate explaining how the mold is removed then use that estimate and do the work yourself. It would cut the cost a lot, If you want to save $$$. Good luck, I hope this is not a huge problem for you. C.P.

Hi, Powerofprayer, I think you should do the kids calm since you are talking about a 4 yo. If you want to get it right away I would try the vit shoppe or a health food store. Then I would get it from iherb it is less and a bigger bottle. It comes in a powder and you mix it with water. Good luck it seems to be a good product so far for TS. C.P.

Calicat, All three of my kids are and were very healthy non- sickly. My youngest did have tube put in her ears at 18 month old, and never had another ear infection again. (she is 10 now) I think back now and remember asking the ped if I should have the kids get the flu shot and she said no because my kids never get sick. It was better if they faught off the illness on their own. Thank goodness we may have seen a huge problem earlier in my sons life had he had the flu shot. I think (could be wrong) that her Immune system may have been effected by the illness. I do believe diet and nutritional supplement can go a long way toward preventing and releaving systems. Kind of like arthritis if one eats anti-inflammatory foods like broccoli, and foods that repair cartalege and bone it can really help. But if one eats too much acid that causes the body inflammation thus pain in the joints. My mom got lyme from a tick and she has done wonderfully on vit. As for the water I think that is a good idea, my parents have well water and we have town water, my son was copper toxic and I don't know how he got that. I don't know what kind of pipes we have, the house is old. I know our radiator pipes are copper. My husband works for a co. that cleans up after fire and storm damage. he was just told yesterday he had to take a class on removing mold. I'll ask him what he thinks about that subject. C.P.

Can long term magnesium suppl cause malabsorption?
Cum Passus replied to patty's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Patty, He almost has an underbite, the top teeth and bottom meet. the only dental work he has had is cleanings and the three baby teeth removed April of 2005 before the onset of tics. I do remember him being nervous and was jumpy that day. He did fine when it was over though. I'll let you know how it goes he should be having them pulled in the next 2 weeks. I think for him it will be nerves that will set off tics. I feel pretty good about the pain not causing more tics as he has been pretty beat up this ball season, and no increase in tics with pain. I'll be wondering about the pain killers he will be getting. When we gave the mag he did very well for about 3 weeks then we noticed a bit more tics. that is when I started the cal, because I wanted to see... if he was already ticcing... I would not be wondering if the supp caused the tics. Once we gave the cal his tics slowed again, for about 2 weeks, then he ticced again, but not much. Then introduced the zinc, same thing happened, good for awhile... then a bit of ticcing. It wasn't until we did the B6 that we have not seen an increase in tics. I find this the most interesting because the B6 was to fix the high Kynurenate (under the neurotransmitter markers) Mag and B12 are the only 2 vit he showed deficient in. I chose to do the B6 first because carolyn said that was the best one to start with. I think if one is following test results they have a good chance the supps. will work as long as one goes slow. Right now he has been doing really well even during the week of SOL tests. The only time we hear him tic more is when he is getting ready for school. I think it is nerves. Last year I could hear him coming home from school, down the street 6 houses away. Now he pops in the kitchen door and sometimes scares me, that is how quiet he is this year. What supplemental info have you had done on your son? C.P. -

Faith you crack me up I declare it was in the kitchen with a bunch of pills Yes, he still gets the multi, natural calm, cal, zinc, vit E & selenium. according to his Metametrix recommedations his base is 50 mcg his Dr. has him on 250 mcg of B12 as cobalamin. I could only find a capsule with 500 mcg. He is not taking the whole capsule yet. The B6 base was 15 mg with units added at 100 mg, doing p5p. Those are the only B's I'm giving outside his multi. The vit C I'm a little nervous about because we thought he had an increase the first time we tried it. His chart has a base of 250mg with units added at 2000 mg. I think we just gave him too much at first I'm going to give a tiny bit and work up to the 2000 mg over a couple weeks. Well he had an orthodontics appt. this morning, still no peeps out of him, but we found out he has to have 6 (yes I said 6) baby teeth pulled. He has already had three baby teeth pulled 2 years ago. Then in 6 months or when ever the teeth decide to show themselves, 4 adult teeth are going to be pulled. At this point I'm going to have to leave it all up to God I can't worry anymore. THIS IS KILLING ME. C.P. -

Patty & Faith, Faith, I think that was me you remembered. I did feel that my son was good for awhile then he would tic again. (not much but enough to notice) he did this with the Mag, cal, zinc, and B6. So far the B6 is the only one that we have not seen even a little increase in tics. His state testing ended last week and as Carolyn pointed out we waited to start the B12. Well so far all is still great. I'm pretty sure with him, it is to give a very very small amount of the supp. to start. Last week I opened the capsule and sprinkled a tiny bit of B12 in his kefir, did this for 5 days. My husband misunderstood my note one day, and gave him half the capsule, all was well so now I'm up to half the amount. Tonight he sat 2 hours at his sister's softball game and made not one peep. I think what we are seeing is what chemar is pointing out about a balance. I will keep you all posted on the next introduction, I think it will be vit C. then krill oil. God Is Good! C.P. -
Hi Calicat, I'm glad you joined, and you sound like you have pulled yourself together quickly. THATS GREAT!! Your daughter sounds like a great girl who will have no problems with tics, (just one more thing for her to master ) I love the way God shows us all the blessings in our kids, it makes the hard times seem not that big of a deal. I'm so glad you have a good idea about the genetics, ( I just noticed genetic is spelled gene + tic) I'm sure if you have read through page 6 you have come across DIET DIET DIET !!! Good luck we hope to hear more about how your daughter is doing in the next few months. C.P.

I had to share because I just finished posting about my 10 year old showing something strange, and I'm choking back tears. My son comes down stairs from his bath, and asks me for his... POISON... (his cal/mag/zinc) We just had a good laugh. C.P.

Hi JMT, You know when my son was at the peek of puberty he was ticcing non-stop too. It was so bad we couldn't even tell when a waning was happening. For him that was almost his whole 12th (age) year. I was wondering... my oldest daughter was going through puberty at 10. Are you noticing your daughter haveing alot of female changes going on? I think the hope for you is... I don't believe girls take as long as boys do to go through their changes. I tell you I'm on pins and needles this week I have seen my youngest daughter (turned 10 in Feb.) start blinking, and doing something with her tongue. I'm trying REALLY REALLY hard not to lose it. My 15 year old told me this week that life here on earth is a really short time, and God is so good he is only giving our family this trial for a small amount of time. And I have eternity to thank Him that TS was only a blip of our time. (Out of the mouths of babes) Keep us posted I woud love to hear how things are going. C.P.

Hi Faith, You know... I would really wonder about the mold in a corn field in the fall. (something else to think about) Faith, are they planting in the spring for the fall maize? You should not have anything to worry about now, because the corn has just popped up I'm sure there is no pollen yet. The field trip is soon... yes? You know I'm wondering about all the times I had my son peal the husks to expose the corn on out porch, for the fall decorations. I know corn is a very moldy food. C.P.

Anyone has smelly gas issues with Peter Gillham's Cal&Mag?
Cum Passus replied to patty's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Patty, I had that happen to me with the liquid multi by Peter Gillham's. I have not tried the Cal/Mag. C.P. -
OH Lenny... We are two peas in a pod. You reminded me of the time I told my son to hold his breath because the truck in front of us was spitting out toxic fumes. Thankfully he didn't listen, and gave me the... OH MOTHER LOOK! God Bless C.P.

Sorry about that. I just wanted to tell you, try not to blame yourself for this. I had to learn the hard way, that causes the most damage. Stress seems to be the big one in our house. Things will fall into place, and I'm hoping this is just a small childhood tic issue, and not TS. Look forward to hearing how the Dr. appt. went. C.P.

Marianne, That is the cool thing about the internet. You can connect with people on the other side of the world. If I can't put a face with a name, I'll know to put an accent to your posts OH GREAT! MY SON JUST MISSED HIS BUS, I'LL BE BACK. C.P.

Patty, What container do you use to hold the the items ? And how is the arms held out? In front of themself, our to the side like a crucifixion? Are both arms out at the same time, or just the one with the object you are testing? Thanks, C.P.
-
Hi, Marianne, Welcome... I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. It's soooo hard. If you can try to have him tested for allergies. My son was also active as a child, (13 now) and I believe taking away the food he was testing positive for has really really helped calm him down. That would be a big help even if he did have ADHD, diet helps all kinds of kids with different health conditions. This place is such a big help, with lots of great people who really know how your feeling. C.P.

Thanks Chemar, Sometimes I wonder if what I read is good advice. We don't have allergies that effect eyes, throat and nose. I was afraid itsme was going to ask me what plant oils would be a good start, and had we tried any. In my house my son is lucky if I let him have OXYGEN! Have a good day, C.P.
