Wilma Jenks Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Started the probiotic yesterday and she was up until 2am. Is this normal. Also... since starting the azith, nystatin and probiotics, she has a REALLY stuffy nose. Could the meds. be causing this? Her MRI shows sinus infection but she usually never has any symptoms.

Sometimes probiotics can cause GI upset when you first begin. Do you think it is an upset stomach or intestinal problems that are keeping her awake? What probiotics are you using and how many units? (they come in billions of units). -Nystatin and azith should not cause stuffy nose, but reflux can if the probiotics, nystatin, and / or azith are not agreeing with her stomach. -What antibiotic was she on prior to azith? -It is also possible that she contracted a virus at the same time that you started the new medications and supplements. -Did you JUST start nystatin? I may be confusing you with someone else, but I thought you were using this for a while. Please post the amount of each medication / supplement, how many times a day you give it, and when you started it. That will help others to help you. -!!Keep hanging in there!! Fixit Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 i am dealing with something similar with new panda kid of mine... stuffy..since 12/16..going back to doc today..on amox..and amox xr on the probis....make sure that there are no strep strains..it just seems to be something that might effect some kids...so why bother... it might not bother at first...but maybe after it builds up.... it will say sterp..or say. s.therm...and there are a couple.. it is in most yogurts...so i avoid those now.... it is not in most good belly which is a drink

PhillyPA Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Try taking her off the probiotic and see what happens. You never know what is coincidence and what is the course of disease but if her sleeplessness started after the probiotic I would stop it and see what happens. Or, continue for a week or so on the probiotic and see if it is just a head cold that is making her unable to sleep. You have to experiment. I ran out of probiotics over Christmas break. My boys went a week without them. Could very well be a coincidence but my older son's rages stopped. For a whole week he was happy and calm. I honestly don't think my boys need a probiotic. There guts are very strong and have no issues in the bowel department. I know that when I take a probiotic I hate it. It makes me feel very uncomfortable. It upsets my stomach. I have no idea why. It shouldn't make me feel that way but it does.

philamom Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 My daughter always has an increase in symptoms when starting a new product (Anything: supplements, vitamins, medicine). It usually takes 3-5 days to settle, if I last. Also, with probiotics, it's best to start small, and work your way up. I know that's a capsule (it's the product I use) of 50+ billion cfu....if you want to start smaller, you can try Culturelle (10 billion) or Culturelle for kids (1 billion). Just a suggestion.

Nystatin 500.000 units - 3x daily Been on for 2 weeks Azith 250mg - 1x daily Been on for a month 1-Charcoal 3x daily 3-6mg. Melatonin bedtime 25mg. Seroquel bedtime Klarir detox support 50+ CFU’s (one pill in the morning) Been on for 2 days. I don't think the Azith is the problem. In fact - 250 mg / day is a little low. The only problem with your azit is that it may either be too low or not the right antibiotic. I googled your probiotic and it says "maximum formula" at 50 billion plus units. I know many people on here take a hundred billion units of probiotics or more per day, but my son can only handle 5-10 billion per day without stomach upset and the only thing he has been able to handle is allerdophilus by twin labs. I figure 5-10 billion is better than none, and he does have problems with reflux (which is one cause of sinusitis)... so we keep it at 5-10 billion (3-5 capsules). If she just started azith and that is her first antibiotic, then she may not need the probiotic and the nystatin immediately - unless a doctor told you she did. Try doing the azith for a few days, then add in the probiotic (try to find one that is a little less potent and that does not have any strep cultures), then add in the nystatin. Also - your melatonin is very high at 3-6 mg. This can make it harder for kids to stay asleep and can induce nightmares in some kids. That is something else to consider. Other things like valerian root or 5HTP at night can supplement the melatonin without the nightmares / racing thoughts. Were you having success with the melatonin before adding in the azith, nystatin and probiotic? If you were - then leave that alone for now. Does she have a fever? That could signal a virus which, of course, would mean that all the stuff I've written above may be false as your problems could just be due to the virus.

I've been dealing with that thru three sinus infectios now. Ugh! yes, dosages would help us get a better idea of your situation. Jodie Jodie- I was under the impression all yogurt is made with streptococcus thermophilus...it's whats needed with the milk to make the product? I could be wrong. I'll check into the Emmi yogurt, since i've been avoiding yogurt, kefir and probiotics with Strep T because of it. Also, I have to say, this is the first fall/winter my daughter hasn't had any major sinus infections in years. She's had a couple of sinus colds, but fortunately was able to clear it. She is on daily zith. Sorry to hear what your kiddo is dealing with. :-(
thereishope Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 Does your child have a dairy allergy or any other allergies? Make sure to read the label for ingredients. You could try to change the brand that you are giving or try to supplement through diet only with Kefir or a probiotic yogurt.
Stephanie2 Posted January 4, 2011 Report Posted January 4, 2011 Wilma, when my boys start/increase probiotics they have trouble sleeping. Give it 3-5 days before giving up. This is probably a good sign that you are killing lots of bad stuff (yeast, bacteria, etc.). Don't be surprised if she gets a little aggressive and/or wild for a few days. I am not familiar with that product, but I know that your practitioner prefers to stay away from the probiotics with strep in it. check just in case, though. You could take the above suggestions to start lower (open the capsule, give half with juice, etc.) but if you are already a couple days into it, maybe you should just tough it out instead of dragging it out. Just a thought.

Thermophilus. I emailed them and they replied: Hello Mike, Below are the types of bacteria I was told are used in our Emmi Yogurt varieties. I do hope these are varieties that you are ok to have so you can enjoy the product! Have you tried the new Green Apple? It's truly unique and delicious! Thank you for your interest in our product! * Streptococcus Thermophilus, Lactobacillus Bulgaricus & Lactobacillus Acidophilus. * (name removed) _______________________ Emmi Roth USA, Inc. 657 Second Street Monroe, WI 53566 (name and contact info removed) http://www.emmirothusa.com
