orthomolecular, I was wondering if you could comment on whether you feel blood or urine testing would give the most accurate info on amino acid deficiencies? Kim

This was posted on another thread, but I wanted it here, since I refer back to this one for various reasons. I also hope that someone may be able to use some of this to help get Reg. Dr.s on board with these ideas, and become a little more flexable on what tests they'll order for us. Healthy Mix Of GI Tract Microbes Are Key To Preventing Allergies And Asthma ANN ARBOR, Mich. Yea it is Giselle, I have to wonder how many of these kids are medicated without real cause, and how many are suffering from the effects of something or a combination of somethings? It doesn't seem like a lot of progress has been made with some of these idea's that have been around for quite a while now. This was an interesting article. http://www.latitudes.org/articles/singh_neuro_ts.html

PANDAS question & food sensitivity quesiton
kim replied to deagar's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Deanna, I think the difference that your seeing is more foods and the Dr. consult basically. DLS Price $546 115 foods 20-30 minute Consultation with Dr. #2. IgG Food Antibodies IgG1 & IgG4- Serum $249.00 measures the sum of IgG1 and IgG4 levels in serum that react to 90 different foods Again, if you have any questions, I would call them. Be sure to check out the site Claire mentioned too. She has more experience with these tests than I do. I think the 2nd part of your post is what Claire and I were both trying to get at! Most reg allergist only check for IgE or immediate reactions, which is what the skin prick will show. These blood test give you the delayed IgG reactions. If the immune system is being taxed by either one (IgE or IgG reactions), it can contribute to tics, along with an imbalace in gut flora or damage to the lining, which allows the food particles to enter the blood stream in the first place, due to yeast overgrowth and a more permeable intestinal tract. Some people have a problem with an overgrowth of bacteria, and not yeast, but that's a different test/subject. On this site, scroll down to "What is Candida" for more info. http://www.rainbowminerals.net/candida.htm My sons showed NO reaction to foods with skin pricks, except mild peanut for youngest. Kim Claire, I take it these tests will show gluten and casein containing food reactions, but are not showing the status of reaction to the specific protein? -

PANDAS question & food sensitivity quesiton
kim replied to deagar's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Deagar, I can't say that I have ever noticed the same tic in regards to strep, but with my boys, their tics are fairly limited. Our most common tic with oldest was head shaking, youngest ...blinky, shoulder shrugger, occasional head shaking. My boys were usually "still" during the worst part of an illness. It seems like the tics would flair as they started to recover. I believe this is the # for Immuno 1-800-231-9197. Just give them a call and ask about pricing. You might not want to mention a Dr. at all. Just tell them you need a description of the test and the price. They get in an awkward position, if a Dr. has quoted you a mark up price. I suspect your're going to find that the price you were quoted is for a more extensive test than the most basic test offered, if I remember right, and Lord knows that can't be counted on! Kim -
Carolyn, Apparently, rice allergies are more common in places like Japan where a lot of it is eaten, but yes, it can cause the symptoms that you described. These looked informative. http://allergy.healthcentersonline.com/foo...riceallergy.cfm http://www.food-allergens.de/symposium-vol...ce-abstract.htm I had also read somewhere quite a while ago, that rice can be high in arsenic, since it is used to keep rats from eating it when being shipped. Don't know if that pertains to all rice. Hope not, I love it, but have started using brown rice mainly because of the carb digestion process (healthier). Kim

NewScientist.com * From New Scientist Print Edition. Subscribe and get 4 free issues. URINE samples from hundreds of French children have yielded evidence for a link between autism and exposure to heavy metals. If validated, the findings might mean some cases of autism could be treated with drugs that purge the body of heavy metals. Samples from children with autism contained abnormally high levels of a family of proteins called porphyrins, which are precursors in the production of haem, the oxygen-carrying component in haemoglobin. Heavy metals block haem production, causing porphyrins to accumulate in urine. Concentrations of one molecule, coproporphyrin, were 2.6 times as high in urine from children with autism as in controls. Autism is thought to have a number of unknown genetic and environmental causes. Richard Lathe of Pieta Research in Edinburgh, UK, says he has found one of these factors. "It's highly likely that heavy metals are responsible for childhood autistic disorder in a majority of cases," he claims. The study will appear in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology. Lathe says these porphyrin metabolites bind to receptors in the brain and have been linked with epilepsy and autism. The researchers restored porphyrin concentrations to normal in 12 children by treating them with "chelation" drugs that mop up heavy metals and are then excreted. It is not yet known whether the children's symptoms have eased, but Lathe cites anecdotal reports suggesting the drugs might do some good. Printed on Wed Jul 12 21:26:01 BST 2006 -

List of Tests to uncover issues that can impact tics
kim replied to Claire's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
This test is getting quite a bit of attention on the ASD forum right now. Several parents have ordered it. What appears exciting about it, is that it will give a reading on total body burden of mercury, as opposed to a snapshot of what is being excreted during a challenge or chelation? From what I gather, the US has Porphyrin tests, but not precoproporphyrin, which is mercury specific...see foot notes. It looks like the test costs about $130.00 and around $50.00 to Fed Ex. Just a urine test! You can email Laboratoire Philippe Auguste in France and request a porphyrin test kit. bumping for azhorsegal This is another "main stream" medical article discussing this subject http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&lr...ent+and+...%22+ It has been speculated that the relatively high incidence of adverse reactions to food proteins in infancy, especially to cows’ milk protein, could be the result of an increased gut permeability to large molecules and the immaturity of local and systemic immunological responses.

azhorsegal. I'm going to bump a thread for you. I had an insurance covered IgG food sensitivity test done through a regular Dr. (Ped) at the recommendation of an Integrative Dr. My Pediatrician, the lab doing the draw, the girls in billing, NOONE HAD ANY IDEA that this test even existed. With our insurance we have to use Quest or Labcorp. I'm afraid that your blood work may not show celiac, and it will confuse you as to the Dr.s findings. My oldest son showed a reaction to grains, yet the blood work for true Celiac was fine. If you can get the test done that I'm talking about in the thread that I'll bump for you, be sure not to have TS mentioned in the diagnosis section on the lab order. Insurance probably will not cover it, if you do. If you have any interest in trying to obtain this test, I'd be happy to give you some further info, that may help.

Alcohol Consumption- I'm wondering if any anyone can comment on how alcohol effects tics? http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/04/health/0...i=5070&emc=eta1 Normally, these receptors are activated by the neurotransmitter glutamate and allow calcium to enter neurons, setting off a cascade of changes that strengthen synapses, by helping to create repeated connections between cells, aiding in the efficient formation of new memories. AND Other research has found that while drunken adolescent rats become more sensitive to memory impairment, their hippocampal cells become less responsive than adults' to the neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid, or GABA, which helps induce calmness and sleepiness.

There are so many of these stories out there. Karen B. on the ASD board posted this today. So sad. For everyone struggling with Dr.s, please remember, it's not only our right to question medical decisions regarding our kids, it's our duty. * * * * * * * * * * NAA Board Member Laura Bono's comments to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices I'm Laura Bono, a Board Member of the National Autism Association. I am not anti-vaccine. I am for safe vaccines. My son was fully vaccinated. On August 9, 1990, my son was developing normally. He was 16 ½ months old. Talking. Playing appropriately. Was very social. He was thriving. On that day, he received the following vaccines: HIB, DT, MMR and Polio. Seven viruses and bacterium with 50 mcg. of thimerosal which was 45 times the EPA limit for mercury for his weight. This mercury was on top of the cumulative dosage of 75 mcg. from the 2, 4 and 6 month shots. Jackson wouldn't sleep that night nor the nights that followed. Over the coming days strange rashes would come and go. Fevers would spike. Within the next weeks diarrhea and constipation would begin. His language stopped. His social skills disappeared. He began displaying odd repetitive behaviors. My Jackson was gone. His personality and health were stolen leaving a sickly, shell of a child behind. After a horrible four month long regression, Jackson was diagnosed with PDD. Over the years he has also been diagnosed with Mercury-Poisoning, Heavy Metal Toxicity, Spike and wave in temporal lobe, Leaky Gut Syndrome, Thyroid Insufficiency, Sensory Integration Disorder, Auditory Processing Dysfunction, Tinnitus, Speech, Language and Social Delay, Tourette's Syndrome, Colitis, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Immune System Dysfunction causing food, inhalant and chemical allergies, Yeast and Viral overload, High Measles Titer, Apraxia, Dyspraxia, Static Encephalopathy and Lymphoid Nodular Hyperplasia. For those of you who don't know, these conditions have a common thread. They can all be caused by mercury toxicity. Jackson's abilities and God-given potential were wiped away in a single day due to mercury. At the Simpsonwood Retreat on June 9, 2000, a group of people some of whom you know, met to discuss an unknown study at the time led by Tom Verstraeten of the CDC. Verstraeten explained to the group that the relative risk of autism to the mercury preservative thimerosal was "linear and significant." But did these health officials use their doctorate degrees to immediately work on a plan to help the children? No. In my opinion, they began cherry-picking the data to save the vaccine program from embarrassment. These scientists were kidding themselves that their acts were for the public good. That the suffering children with mercury poisoning misdiagnosed as autism were the necessary casualties of the war on disease. Necessary collateral damage. An acceptable risk. Remember my son who got separate DPT and HIB shots delivering 50 mcg. of thimerosal? His subset was discussed at Simpsonwood. Because there were so many kids who got autism due to separately HIB and DPT, they deleted it from the study as to not skew the results. Here is Dr. Rhodes at the Simpsonwood meeting discussing this particular subset of children: On Page 105: "The other thing that happens at NCK is that even a year or two years after the policy change has been made and all kids are supposedly receiving the combination, there is an odd, small group of kids that supposedly receives separate DTP and Hib (note: with more thimerosal) and an unusually high percentage of those kids are outcomes." Rhodes discusses how he has deleted this extraordinarily high subset of children from the analysis on page 106: "For example, if 1,500 kids were receiving one vaccine combination in that month of birth and 20 were receiving some other, I have removed the 20 completely from the analyses." This subset deletion was just one of the many inventive ways the data was changed to fit the result the group was looking for – to bring the Thimerosal and Autism relative risk down from over 7 to a RR just above 2. They went on to work on the data, creating at least two more generations before the RR was under 1. The study showing no link to thimerosal and autism was published in the Nov. 2003 Pediatrics article. Please don't kid yourselves that thimerosal is gone and you don't have to think about it anymore. That it isn't your problem. Thimerosal is still in flu shots for pregnant women and children and still in vaccines in trace amounts along with a dangerously high bolus dose of aluminum. There's probably not a toxicologist among you but if there were, he or she would tell you that the heavy metal cocktail I've described is a recipe for disaster. As you know, there is a synergistic affect of metals. An LD1 of lead and an LD1 of mercury is equal anywhere from an LD50 to an LD100. What have we done as we increase aluminum exposure along with trace amounts of thimerosal? We will be substituting aluminum toxicity for mercury toxicity? My mercury poisoned son is now 17 year old. He is chelating and getting better. His return to good health underscores that children can be helped at any age. They just need the proper treatments and have them covered by insurance. At 17, while your son or daughter makes plans for the soccer game, going out with their friends and preparing for their senior year of high school, mine still can't have a meaningful conversation. I believe policy makers who approve vaccines laced with heavy metals are misguided and not keeping up with the latest research on heavy metal toxicity. You fail in your important jobs if you approve any vaccine without adequate testing – especially those for children. Safe vaccines must be paramount in your decisions. As a group you can redeem yourselves. Parents of autistic children need research help for their sick children and in your important jobs you can have an influence. We also need you to state a preference for thimerosal free/aluminum free shots for pregnant woman and children. The world is watching and our children are waiting. * * * * * * * * * * * * ** * * http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dl...332/1020/NEWS04 School personnel say they are seeing children who are sicker at younger ages than in the past, said Bonnie Soldano, executive director of the organization founded in 1994 by families raising suicidal teens

azhorsegal, Funny how this worked. I was replying to your post on a different thread, and went looking for the article here that you just commented on! Here was how far I had gotten with my response when I bumped into you here azhorsegal, When ever I read a post on eczema, the response from parents is almost always MILK as the primary suspect. From this article http://www.naturalfamilyonline.com/2-ch/47...a-treatment.htm There are, however, eight common foods that make up nearly 90 percent of possible allergic foods. These are milk, egg, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish and wheat. This goes on to talk about using topical steroids, not sure that's the best idea for our kids? I have used many of these myself for a patch of psorisis on my elbow, and zinc oxide works just as well. You may want to see what you can find on it's use on a child and if it's effective for eczema. Your second question is the one that keeps me up ALL NIGHT many nights. ********************** Glad you already found it!! Kim

For all the neuros and Dr.s with their condescending smiles, it would be interesting to initiate a conversation about this, get their patient "you're an idiot" smiles, and then hand them this. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/...50111174539.htm I will be posting this under the Articles thread too. JJJ, I would tell my Dr. that I WOULD THINK TWICE about giving my son insulin, if it could have horrible adverse effects, and there was something to treat the source of the diatetes, not just the symptom. When an alternative therapy decreases a tic, we're told it's a coincidence or all in our/their head. When it's a drug, it's a different story. Clonidine appeared to be working for my son's too, then it didn't. The Neuro wanted to increase the dose, which I knew would make them to sleepy to function. Also, it did nothing to help their overall state of health. I sure don't mean to sound like I'm trying to give you a hard time, and I too am glad that clonidine has helped your son. Kim

simonzl, What I have found with my youngest son is that he doesn't appear to need as much of everything that you would be getting in 20 vits, but he does need the Mag taurate and calcium. His tics seem to be very much related to what he eats (or doesn't eat, would be more like it). If he gets ticcy during the day, I give him a Mag taurate or 2, and a calcium supplement, making sure he gets at least equal parts, or higher on the calcium. He's taking about 4 of the TS Plus in the morning, and 4 in the evening. I'm careful not to exceed 500 mgs of mag taurate, in fact even if he takes 2, he's only getting about 340 mgs per day btwn 8 vits and 2 mag taurate. Some days we only need 1 extra, some, not at all. This is a 9 yr. old child, that weighs about 92 lbs. If you try reducing the amount of TS plus, and upping the mag and cal. please let us know how it goes. Finding the calcium citrate was kind of hard. Most of them are combo's of things I didn't want, or a cheap form which is not absorable. The twin labs does have calcium citrate, but also contain magnesium oxide. Sometimes I give 1 mag taurate with 1 of the twin lab supps. This gives my son 125 mgs of mag. and 150 calcium. Then I have a bottle of Citracal Petites. This contains 200 IU Vit D (which is not found in Bonnies vits) and 200 mgs calcium citrate per tablet. This one can be used, to get a full 2 to 1 ratio on the calcium to magnesium, but I have to cut the tablet in 1/2 if I'm only using 1 mag taurate, as they are 50 mgs. per single capsule. Kim
