matis_mom Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 OK, you've convinced me My question is, after months on Augmentin XR, would the testing be accurate? Thanks for the post, I know you are doing it out of real concern for all of us!
lyme_mom Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 I did call and was told like you said Justine that only if you are doing pcr and urine test does it matter. So picking all your brains, what test do you think should be run? I was going to repeat what we had done with Quest which is just the Elisa plus western blot. Anything additional? She does show the high titer for Igg Mycoplasma. Thanks for all who posted. Kay Kay- I recommend the Basic Lyme Panel #4090 (Western Blot IgG, IgM, Lyme IFA) at $260 thru IgeneX. You pay upfront and submit to your insurance...and then keep your fingers crossed for coverage. They hold the sample for three months, so if you decide to run additional tests you will just need an additional fax from your doctor sent over. I agree my llmd told me that labcorp and quest are wrong fifty percent of the time. Igenex or clongen labs offer the only serious tests for Lyme. My llmd starts with labcorp (considered better than Quest for Lyme test) and if he doesn't get a positive result but suspects Lyme he will either test with igenex or simply start treating the symptoms. Lyme specialists know what lyme and the confections look like. There will be signs that you are on the right track if Lyme is involved (ie., worsening symptoms due to die off or improvement of symptoms).
Kay Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Thanks Philamom will do...and to the person (sorry I can't see your name now that I am posting) who asked about months and months of augmentin xr my daughter is on the same xr for about 2 months and other antibiotics since December. I called the lab today and the said only urine test and pcr test were the ones that you should not be on antibiotics for. I asked numerous times that it was ok to be on antibiotics and do the western blot and she said yes, she probably thought something was wrong with me, I just wanted to be sure.

Thanks for the post, I know you are doing it out of real concern for all of us! I don't know about the XR, but my daughter's been on Augmentin, Zithromax, and Flagyl since June 2009. She tested Positive. (IgeneX) Edited August 4, 2010 by philamom
sf_mom Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 I think there might be some indication especially if you are testing for co-infections. Sometimes co-infections pop up without positive Lyme results. I know its asking a lot to test for both but I strongly feel it will potentially save you thousands in expensive treatments and years of potential headache. I'm now a firm believer Lyme/co-infections absolutely has to be ruled out prior to more aggressive treatments than antibiotics and via Igenex only. Iowadawn Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 I know we will feel better when the IGeneX tests come back. We plopped down a tidy $1425 for Lyme & Co-infections. We balked, but are glad we did. We just turned in the stuff to insurance--odds that it will be covered, anyone?? I really don't care. Dawn
MichaelTampa Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 My Aetna insurance covered, I think, something like 50% of the cost of the tests I did. Not nearly as much as they cover the standard labcorp and quest tests, but still, it helped.
PhillyPA Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 I am not sure if my son was tested by the IgeneX lab. However, my son did his Lyme testing thru Dr. Brian Fallon at Columbia University. My understanding is that Dr. Fallon is one of the best Lyme doctors out there. All of my son's Lyme tests came back negative.

I'm not sure it this accurate (hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in) but I thought if you had a persistent/chronic Lyme infection it could be negative one month, positive the next...so forth. That's why some LLD will treat on symptoms alone and re-test to see if it then shows a response? I could be wrong.
sf_mom Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Dr. Fallon is one of the best and recently attended the PANDAS meeting at HIMH. I'm fairly certain he would have used Igenex but I would confirm with your paperwork and check to see if he tested for co-infections. I think its critical. Again, friends son negative for Lyme but positive for two co-infections via Igenex. hdIVIG was working for about 8 weeks and then he would start to regress slowly. Now that he is being treated properly his recovery is taking off and there is no back sliding (only herxing) and he is approximately 10 weeks post last IVIG.
MSmom Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 (edited) Both of my kids are going to have Igenex testing (Comprehensive lyme panel and co-infections.) I have antibiotic prescriptions for both kids, but I called Igenex today and was told to have the lyme testing prior to starting the antibiotics. This is the same advice I had received previously from an informed parent. One of my kids is also on Plaquenil, and the employee at Igenex told me to have her stop the Plaquenil for 14 days prior to testing as well. I'm going to comply with this, as I figure the purer the test, the better. (But it is killing me to have these abx prescriptions in hand and not be able to start them yet!) PhillyPA Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Yes, Dr. Fallon tested for all the tick borne illnesses. It was all negative.
bubblegum Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 I just wanted to mention that when I sent my daughter's blood to IGenex she was on Augmentin ES 900 mg 2 x day.I did the Babesia fish one and it was +.Also bands IND 31,39, and 41++.Dr.Jones also sent blood to another lab that he uses to re-check Bartonella and BB.He knew that she is on the Augmentin. Also my daughter had a small mass on her chest that was removed in 2008.I called pathology and they are sending the paraffin block(with tissue)to Dr.J and he will send it to a lab to look for lyme.So if anyone has tissue from any kind of surgery they might want to get it checked.
peglem Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 So, would you get valid Igenex test results after IVIG?
philamom Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 So, would you get valid Igenex test results after IVIG? We tested 10 weeks after IVIG and received a positive result. I know you are doing monthly infusions so you might want to call to be certain. Melinda
