my son was put on flagyl for Crohn's in 2006 and had a pretty ick reaction as his tics skyrocketed, and his digestion got mega messed up. It could have been a die off reaction but it was so intense that he refused to ever take it again

he has always seemed hypersensitive to most chemicals, including meds, so that may have played a part as well

HI Chemar...

just a thought ...in regards to you dh reaction to steriods and your son's to flagyl...

as i understand more and read and read and fester....

could it be that both trigger a yeast or overgrowth????..

now i know to put ds on anti fungals and probitotics, when doing steroids or abx...

Not that you will ever know, just throwing it out there...

thanks Fixit.

we have always been very diligent about probiotics and also do regular Candida "maintenance" now since the mid 90s when I first read The Yeast Syndrome so no, I dont think it is candida stuff

dh likely reacted to the steroids so badly because he has Tourette Syndrome and steroids are dopaminergic, which is a tic trigger in TS

I think in son's case, the fact that he reacts negatively to all meds, including all abx, is likely due to his multiple chemical sensitivity coupled with whatever unique biochemistry comes with his combined disorders.

also, the important thing related to this discussion is that neither of them are dx PANDAS so lperhaps react differently too to things that may be beneficial to a PANDAS patient

I only mentioned my son's tic spike after flagyl (and past reference to dh on steroid burst) as I always think it relevant to add the perspective of a TS patient in case it can be helpful to to others here who may also have that dx along with PANDAS

I haven't read this whole thread but someone asked about diflucan. We have a ton of experience with it here. First, our doc's office writes a ton of it (I think he said 5000 RX's a year) and they have ever only had to discontinue it one time due to liver issues. So far, my 2 and 5 year olds are doing well on it long term (and we do have LFT's done).

Also, I just wanted to point out that as you are starting your prednisone taper, just be aware that it may exacerbate yeast (which could cause silly drunken like behavior or even irritability/aggression), so if you think that the nystatin is not doing it, call Dr. Lin back for some more diflucan. My kids were already on diflucan and it failed during steroids so we actually had to switch to ketoconozole which cleared it up right away...

Phasmid,

I think this is very important too.

I found some research in relationship to psoriais/ strep that I find pretty interesting (and believe it may well be what happened to me after a skin infection).

If this is correct, it seems these antibodies may be stirred up by fungus or yeast, too.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P...ei0105-0079.pdf

Antibodies from patients with psoriasis recognize N-acetylglucosamine terminals in glycoproteins from Pityrosporum ovale.

Fixit,

i'm not sure if i get what you are stating...

Just that you had a skin infection and it trigger psoriaisis

No, the skin infection came after I had the psoriasis on my elbow for many years. The psoriasis actually disappeared after the infection.

Or that yeast and Fungus can trigger a pandas reaction

Maybe?

What I thought was interesting was the fact that this is the first evidence (?) I have seen where these problematic antibodies were recognizing yeast. The same epitope that has been shown to be problematic in PANDAS (GlcNAc).

That the antibodies that attack strep also react/attack to yeast ...correct??

Am i getting that right?

So do you think this similar reaction to yeast(as though it were strep) is only present in psorisis patients and/or/but it could imply once your anitbodies react in such a fashion it doesn't matter if its psorisis or pandas/pits...

I am not trying to be confusing....
