Hello,

I only post here occasionally (I should do more!), but I continue to find this forum, and all of your advice, to be invaluable.

I just wanted to post about a change we have made that has affected my daughter’s behavior quite dramatically (her background below). And I am curious to hear others experience’s / comments. (I will post on both Tourette’s and Pandas forums).

About 10 days ago I disconnected/unplugged our home cordless telephone system. I did this because sadly another friend of mine has developed terminal brain cancer and I decided to go back and use the “old fashioned” corded phones only (and severely limit cell use). We also only very occasionally turn on a wireless router. Anyway, after several days I realized that my daughter was no longer having her daily (or multi-times daily) rage and anger outbursts. I mean NONE. This has never happened, and it completely coincides with our unplugging the cordless phone (which she used to sit near in the kitchen area). She has been the most complacent and sweet natured kid EVERY DAY. I can not tell you how amazing this is. For myself and my husband, we can say we notice that we feel “better/calmer” in some slight way, but for my daughter the change has been dramatic.

I see that there have been a couple of other posts here about EMF (electromagnetic field) sensitivity, and I have been researching extensively since noticing a correlation. Apparently EMF creates an opening in the blood brain barrier. They disrupt neurocognitive functioning, disrupt neurotransmitters (serotonin etc.). People who are chemically sensitive are likewise more sensitive to EMFs.

Please let me know what your experiences may be.

Also, please consider unplugging your cordless phones, home wireless systems and turning off cell phones in the house for a few days and see what reactions your or your children have.

Thanks for reading!

[background---- my daughter is nearly 8yo. She’s had a long battle with lyme disease that’s left her with a propensity for tics and OCD. She goes through periods tic-free, but at other times they return to varying degrees. We’ve been on long term antibiotics, but are off now. She’s quite chemically sensitive, and we have great luck when we really watch her diet and limit as much toxic exposure as possible.]

That is great news.....

along with that ...i read where they want to eleminate outlets in the house and everything will be cordless and run by magnets

i wonder what that will do...scares the slltlerl out of me

a friend of ours was pumping this magnetic bed thing...they tried it and we tried it and it gave all of us weird feelings and outrageous dreams/nightmares

and that was only after a couple of days

also isn't there concern about living too close to power stations????

and the other thing is these wireless waves are all around from satalite radio, mobile phones and ear pieces, computers blah blah blah

mama,

really kind of interesting. does your child have any other issues, or just the behavior?

I actually think I'm going to give this a try,...(lol, I can just see my husband's reaction now..... :( ...)

when my son was having the radiogenic testing (NAET is the modern form of this) we were told to do all we could to limit the EMF around our son

even tho it would be so much cheaper to just have our cellphones, we have retained a regular phone service

and dont use portables/wireless

I stopped using a portable phone in the house about a year ago because my head felt funny when I would have the phone near my ear.

I get this same feeling when I use cell phones. I read an article about a month ago... It was from a Christian biochemist from Tenn. If you can try to google her name and see what comes up... Tamare Jo Mariea, Phd, CCN. She raises alarm about the health effects of chemicals, cell phones, and HDTV. She mentions WiFi but I do not know what that is.She believes we are at a "tipping point" and finds it intresting that it is our generation and younger who are having the autistic children.

Thanks for letting us know this I do remember the portable phone issue with me and now have corded phones in the house.

PacificMama--So happy to hear the news, and so happy to hear I'm not quite the only one. I have been troubled by the wireless and also fluorescent lights for a long time now, although I do have significant symptoms when avoiding them. I am actually on disability leave from work now, directly resulting from recent installation of wireless at the work office. Interesting to hear your daughter has lyme as well. I have recently been getting tidbits of hints that I may have lyme as well. I'll be getting blood test results in a few days for that. I am so much wanting to hear that there is a solution to the EMF sensitivity, that it is some illness, as it is just getting harder to avoid them. Do you feel the lyme is under control at this point, and she still has this sensitivity? Or is the lyme still a real problem? Any other infections of note? I have a serious fungus/yeast infection as well. Like so many other infections, you can have them without really knowing.

CSP--WiFi is the short name people use to refer to cellphones and wireless computers and systems and other devices working on similar principles. They actually use EMF's in the range officially referred to as microwaves ... yes, the same things that microwave machines use.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your feedback. I think EMF sensitivity is an issue that we will see increasingly referenced. I have learned so much in the past week! Here is a link to some articles that appeared on the Latitudes forum. It's a bit dated, but interesting.

http://www.latitudes.org/articles/electric...y_articles.html

Of particular interest to me is that EMFs create permeability in the blood brain barrier, and this in turn allows toxins a pathway to the brain. There are many articles studies out there that discuss the ramifications of this. My daughter is particularly sensitive to toxins, chemicals, etc (in food and environment), and these can be a trigger for her tics. For the past couple of years I have thought of her as our "canary in the coal mine" -- her behavior alerts us to those things that are not good for any of us. Perhaps the same is true of her EMF sensitivity.

Faith: my daughter is mostly doing well these days. She has had major episodes of tics and ocd during her sickest time with lyme, and during a relaspse last year (which I think was triggered by 5yo immunizations). She does have one current tic behavior, but so far it is manageable. She is the sweetest kid, however she has long been prone to a quick temper and angry outbursts. We've never managed to eliminate this with all we do. Until now, when we unplugged the cordless.

MichaelTampa: Sorry to hear that you have had to take disability. I am now investigating products that supposedly minimize the effects of EMF. It all seems kind of crazy, but I'm hoping they do indeed work. Have you seen these? You could google "no emf products" and lots will come up. As far as my daughters lyme, she is holding her own at this point. She contracted it at 2yo, and was very, very sick until she was finally diagnosed at age 3. She was on antibiotics for nearly 2 years. Fine for a year. And then relapsed (I think triggered by immunizations). So back on antibiotics for 1.5 years, and now off again. So much controversy about lyme treatment! Her doctor does think it can be completely eliminated, but others believe the bacteria may never be fully erradicated -- you just beat it down as best you can and hold it at bay with a strong immune system. (I think this is what I believe after all our experiences). Her tics/ocd are consequently kind of PANDAS-like, but I'm still sorting out/learning what I think is the case. In any event, we keep her diet clean (always worried about yeast), and her life as non-toxic as possible. Aside from one minor tic right now, she is good. Find yourself what is called a "lyme literate" doctor and get yourself tested/evaluated. Good luck.

Yes, i agree EMF can have an effect on those who are susceptible. TV & computers used to spike my son's tics, so we treated w/NAET and it has less effect on him even when he is waxing. Our PG&E utility comp would do a free accessment on EMF inside & outside of home and i got mine done last year and had a very low reading. I too also use a phone w/land line and do not let me kids use cell phone unless it is necessary. We don't use the microwave and turn off as much switches as possible at nite. My son does not have an emotional issue connection w/EMF.

I am so curious about this observation with your daughter. We took my 8 year old son to his grandparents' house last winter and I was amazed about how his tics completely stopped and he was so much calmer and less emotionally volatile. I kept thinking that something must be different and it could be that they live in the forest and maybe there was less exposure to powerlines, cell towers and such. Plus we have a cell tower close to our home so I wonder if that's a trigger. It was a dramatic difference and I kept thinking, okay, these tics can go away and someday they will go away and stay away. Can't wait to see what happens when we go back this summer.

FYI, I didn't find anything on her site regarding HDTV, and I have a difficult time seeing how that would matter as far as this stuff is concerned, unless the TV is giving off more EMF's because there are more little bits of picture? I don't have HDTV or any real experience with it, so don't know how it affects me, but TV as a whole has never been anything I've noticed as having an affect on me, whereas wireless and fluorescent lights are terrible for me.

Michael,

I no nothing about electronics, but I remember she said something about HD emits a plume of radiation that could extend up to 12 feet in front of a large set.

Is it the large set that is the problem? I don't know.

Funny, I also remember feeling funny in my husbands co. car, I thought it was the GPS, could it be that it is an electric car?

yup, we were warned re car EMF as well CP

I just updated on this similar thread on the pandas forum that my son also sleeps on a cotton futon with wood base...no metal and especially no coiled springs

our naturopath said electricity in the room plus the metal coils in most mattresses= bad EMF

He felt so strongly on it that he said even just the electric in the wiring around the house, combined with the right metals was bad EMF

he recommended turning off all electrics and unplugging at night, and using single battery nightlight/flashlight if needed

he also emphasized no blue or green LED lights at night

fluorescent lighting is also a major trigger for my son

I dont know what we are going to do if they truly do totally phase out incandescent bulbs and we are forced to use these fluorescent coil bulbs they are pushing now

I agree they are more energy efficient and a good "green" idea...but many people have fluorescent light photosensitivity.

many dont even realize THAT is why they always have headaches at work or in the malls. *SCHOOLS!!* etc under fluorescent lighting for hours at a time

Chemar,

From your comments on the fluorescents, I assume you've probably heard the Clean Energy Act passed a few years ago does outlaw sale of incandescent bulbs as of January 2012. There are very limited exceptions, like for refrigerators and hard-hats for minors and extremely tiny decorative lighting (such as might be used for christmas trees). LED is still available, but very expensive up front, although will pay for itself in the long-run as even cheaper than fluorescents (even ignoring health care costs). There is always hope it will get overturned, there was one member of congress I saw a while back trying to overturn it...
