Oct BARTONELLA WEBINARS: Discussing Biology of Bartonella, Human Case Series Published in J EID (May 2012) and Long Term Clincial Experience In May 2012, a team of veterinary and human medical scientists published in the CDC's Journal , Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID May 2012), the largest ever case series of Bartonella spp. bacteremic patients in the human medical literature. These patients were examined and selected for testing by a single rheumatologist (Dr. Robert Mozayeni) due to concerns about Lyme disease, however, distinct clinical features associated with Bartonella were observed. Bartonella appears to be an important co-infection of in humans with Borreliosis, however, Bartonella sp. can be transmitted by a broad range of vectors that harbor these bacteria. In addition, a broad range of animal hosts serve as persistently infected reservoirs for human infection. Awareness is emerging regarding Bartonella infections in domestic and wild animals and humans. Importantly, bartonellosis appears to share a high degree of overlap with the clinical manifestations of Lyme disease. Beginning in September 2013, Ed Breitschwerdt, DVM, Professor of Veterinary Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at North Carolina State University, and B. Robert Mozayeni, MD, founder of the Translational Medicine Group, P.C., Rockville, MD will present a two-part webinar series for health professionals (CME's are being applied for, awaiting approval) regarding the biology, diagnosis and treatment of bartonellosis. These two hour sessions will be offered at Introductory and Advanced Levels. There will also be a webinar regarding Bartonella sp. and bartonellosis for the general public to be held in October. The webinar series will be sponsored by the Center for Translational Medicine, a 501c(3) research and educational organization co-founded by Dr. Mozayeni. Dr. Breitschwerdt is a co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Galaxy Diagnostics, LLC. and Dr. Mozayeni is the Chief Medical Officer of Galaxy Diagnostics, LLC. Good, cheap(er), strep-free strain Probiotics
philamom replied to Tattoomom's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I give between 2-4 detox support capsules a night, so becomes expensive. It seems to be working though- afraid to change it up. Our llmd recommends therelac, I believe. -
Timely post. I am about to purchase a kitten (possibly tomorrow). I've been putting it off since my two cats died a few years ago. My daughter was in a terrible flair at the time, and it was very traumatic for her. Since then we found we are dealing with pandas, lyme and bartonella, so I've been really afraid to get another cat. But, both my daughter and I really miss the company of an indoor kitty. Will run testing though - suggestions?

Good, cheap(er), strep-free strain Probiotics
philamom replied to Tattoomom's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Here is what we use in order of least expensive: Florastor- purchase from drugstore.com or local drugstore. I always print a coupon from their website (florastor.com) before purchasing. Most times I wait until I get a 25% off coupon from CVS and purchase a few boxes at their store. They allow you to combine coupons at the same time. Culturelle- same as above. Inside every box is a $2.00 off coupon. Integrative Therapeutic Probiotic Pearls- I order through amazon every 3 months - automatic shipment. These are very small round capsules that are easy to swallow. Klaire Ther Biotic Detox Support- they are very expensive but also my favorite. 50+ billion cfu's per capsule. *all strep therm free I also think Jarrow is a good brand - esp. for younger kids. -
Also make sure they tested for Giardia. Does he experience any cramping with stools?
-
Has he been checked for c-diff? Many GI doctors overlook it. The stool test should have checked for c-difficile toxin A & B. Sometimes more than one sample is needed. Is he on any antibiotics right now? Or too much magnesium/vitamin C? For us, Florastor (Sach Boulardii) has been helpful.

Never tried Mino. Can it be used w/Augmentin and Azith? Actually, the other specialist who put him on the Clindo/Rifampin run specifically instructed me to drop the Augmentin but to keep ON the Azith. I was not aware of those side effects. Thx. Mino can be used with Azith. My daughter was on that combo (also amox) for lyme, bart & strep.

So sorry cobbie. -
Lauren- my daughter did not show improvement with her first two IVIG's. We continued and they have helped immensely (along with treatment for other underlying infections), but wanted to mention that its possible not to see improvement right way and still be autoimmune related. Just stating our case. thx

Welcome to the area If you haven't received any info on him, pm me. edit- also agree with Jag10 100%

So sorry for your experience! Keep pushing. The nurse's empty apology is not good enough. Very unprofessional! Thank goodness your son didn't witness it. You should write them a letter.

I've seen a lot of posts on thyroid recently and up until now haven't paid much attention. Don't really know much in that area. My daughter's last lab results show her low in Thyroxine T4 Free Direct (normal is .93- 1.60 she is .77). TSH is normal. Should this be addressed? Or is she fine since her TSH is normal? powpow- sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread.

Vitamin D3 caused SEVERE insomnia.
philamom replied to trintiybella's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Thanks smarty - I read your response in yourr post. We stopped it again. Dd shows symptoms immediately at 400iu. We r headed south to Rothman and need her at her best. -
Dr M. is not a PANDAS doctor but can be very helpful. He is a great listener and has seen patients with pandas, lyme, etc. Unfortunately, most here end up traveling out of state. Private message me if you would like more details on him. It may be the way to go if you don't have a car. If you do see him, expect a very long wait time in his office. He's always backed up. We see Dr. B in Ct. as well. We take the train.

Carson's was one of the brands I tried. I see bad behavior by the next day on every brand. No good days. -
Any experience with Dr Angelica Lemke?
philamom replied to Wombat140's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Haven't read your entire post, but you may want to reach out to Stephanie2. Or read her posts. I think she has had success with Dr Lemke and also started her own blog on homeopathy. -
I guess I posted at same time as others. My dd level was low during winter months due to infections. The dr told me to supplement but I decided to wait it out and see if it corrected itself. We also deal with constant constipation. It was normal last month when we checked. But u should address it if it's been that long.

Vitamin D3 caused SEVERE insomnia.
philamom replied to trintiybella's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Trinitybella- my dd is no where as severe as ur daughter but on the bit d she becomes a mess. Can't go to school, has constant issues with her friends, wakes up yelling at the world. All behavioral Her dr could offer no explanation other than to try a different brand. I know its not the case. That's why I love this forum - know im not alone and crazy. We have done a lot of treatment and to see her backslide on vit d is very hard. Ifran- so I take it ur not supplementing? Is his level low? Anyone else children can't take it? -

philamom replied to trintiybella's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I cannot get my dd on vitamin d. She becomes extremely oppositional and grumpy. Also cries a lot on it. This is at 400 iu. Her llmd wants her at 4000 iu daily. This seems more than a herx because it does not diminish. I've tried 3 separate times and different brands. Her level is 24. Llmd says it needs to be higher for treatment to work. Time in the sun does not budge it. We've been monitoring it for 2 yrs. Smarty- did you ever get your son past 200 iu? I recall you had problems as well. LLM- do u have a possible explanation? Would the 23 test give a suggestion?
