Do transient tics ever go away/ L-Carnitine questions
Chemar replied to partyof5's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
If dairy or gluten are tic triggers for him then the cheese sandwich may have triggered the tics, especially if he has been on an elimination period for those. -
That is something to check with your doctor. Some people need iron & iodine and others do not

We grow our own lemon balm and one can also make a soothing tea with fresh leaves or even just chew a leaf when feeling stressed!

Amino Acid Long Term Use? Okay or Not?
Chemar replied to JosyJoy's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi it really depends on the amino acid and also the individual so best to consult your doctor on specifics Just an FYI that quercitin is a bioflavinoid, not an amino acid and GABA is a neurotransmitter not an amino acid Taurine is an amino acid and as far as I know is safe long term IF there is a deficiency. NAC is a variant (man made) of the amino acid cisteine and as very few studies have been done on it, especially related to children, there really are a lot of unknowns in terms of longterm use of it iHerb has a good database on supplements, although they do not list all the conditions they are used for -
blood test q's/ bontech q's and current situation
Chemar replied to logismum's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
I like Thorne Research products as they are pure. The multi is called Basic Nutrients and comes in assorted combinations, including a children's formula. One can usually only get them via physicians but they are also sold via iherb.com. and iherb does ship internationally. -

Dairy intolerant patients sometimes do ok on goats milk, or almond milk or rice milk and in some cases, soy milk...obviously only if not intolerant to those. -

Do transient tics ever go away/ L-Carnitine questions
Chemar replied to partyof5's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
In reply to your question about carnitine...some people prefer the l-carnitine and others the acetyl-l-carnitine. However, we were told not to use it long term and also there has been some recent research related to adverse cardiac effects from carnitine but it seems the research done there is getting a lot of scrutiny and may not be relevant to what we used it for. Still, always good to discuss with your health care provider first -
Do transient tics ever go away/ L-Carnitine questions
Chemar replied to partyof5's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi yes I have heard of a number of children whose transient tics have resolved without any intervention. Tics are considered transient if they are present for less than a year before being resolved, and do not recur. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000747.htm -
Hi and welcome I would suggest you repost this on our PANDAS?PANS forum as I am sure the members there will have some input for you. Not many look in this new intro section yet. Here is the link to the PANDAS/PANS forum http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=17

blood test q's/ bontech q's and current situation
Chemar replied to logismum's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi until you have a definitive dx, you may be wasting money on the BonTech as they are specifically designed for people with TS I am not sure what that doctor meant by "doesn't look like a TS kid" ???? Was he referring to physical appearance? as then he has no clue what he is talking about! If he was referring to the tics, well...the "official" info states that if both motor and vocal tics are present for at least a year, it is TS. However, now that more is known about so many other things that can trigger tics, one really needs to do more investigating before just assuming. As yet there is no definitive "test" that 100% confirms TS though gene research is promising imo -
Hi we were told to go up to 500mg a day, but not to use it longterm, only as needed.

How long does Magnesium take to see improvement?
Chemar replied to cara615's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
well none of those ingredients is bad but that is a very high dose imo and again, not knowing how much calcium he has in his diet....that may be way too much for him Many members here like the Natural Calm ionic mag citrate supplement as well as the Epsom Salts baths Remember too that if your son's tics are not TS related, he may not require the extra magnesium! For example, if his tics are related to allergies (food or environmental), infectious or toxic agents etc...then until the offending substance is removed, the tic trigger remains, nomatter how many good things you may add. here is a simple but important response to long term GABA use http://docwellness.wordpress.com/2011/06/03/the-dangers-of-daily-gaba-use/ The biggest problem re long term use is that studies are very scant and so we really don't know enough about supplementing GABA, especially in children. I know our physician did stress that it was a very potent neurological agent and that it needed to be weaned off, and never stopped abruptly. He also suggested titrating up in dose when first taking it as well -
Hi Cara there is no way to really predict if tics will go from mild to severe or vv. If it is TS, then waxing and waning is generally expected, when there are periods more intense than others, but as we found, doing good things to help can reduce the frequency and intensity of the waxing phases. We were told to use GABA only when needed, and not longterm. Also told to titrate down and never just abruptly stop taking it.

How long does Magnesium take to see improvement?
Chemar replied to cara615's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
Hi what kind of supplement is it? and what are the proportions of calcium and magnesium? are there any "other ingredients"? Some people do better with just the additional magnesium, provided they are getting sufficient calcium in their diet...most people get in lots of dietary calcium but not enough magnesium and it is the magnesium that is important to help reduce tics. They type of magnesium matters too...mag oxide is useless as it is very poorly absorbed -
Hi Cara and welcome My son is now an adult, but has genetic TS, diagnosed at 10 though he manifest tics a lot younger. His tics and OCD were pretty severe, so we tried meds but the side effects were not worth it. Once we started a more holistic approach, with dietary & environemtal modifications, as well as correct supplements, acupuncture etc we saw dramatic results. I have documented what we did in the link in my signature below, and there is also a bit about him in Sheila Roger's (our admin) book http://www.latitudes.org/book.html His sensory issues were much helped through OT as per the book "The Out Of Sync Child" by Carol Kranowitz See you on the TS forum .... http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=1

We always used Epsom in conjunction with a magnesium supp. I don't think there is an accurate way of knowing what the transdermal absorption of the magnesium during a bath would be, but I doubt it would be anywhere near 300mg? However, having a bath and getting in whatever is absorbed is better than nothing plus maybe having more magnesium rich foods on those days....
-
Some people give it daily while others use it as needed. The recommended daily magnesium for someone with TS is about 300-500mg depending on age/weight I believe, and that can come from diatary and supplement sources all together.

I don't think I have ever seen any discussion calling it Nature Calm Al? It is Natural Calm by Natural Vitality. Personally, I prefer the original Natural Calm formula, without any added flavoring, although I think that the flavors used are "natural" but still, never a certainty. They also make a children's multi-nutrient formula called Kid's Calm, but that is different from the Natural Calm which is just ionic magnesium citrate

Thorne Research make an excellent multi... it is high potency so we find we don't need to take as much as they suggest. http://www.thorne.com/Products/Multiples/prd~VM5.jsp My son prefers this as it is truly just the basic multi, pure and without any fad "extras"...many of which he is sensitive too

I am not sure if there is any documented research on this but it would not surprise me if there was a correlation. We have previous anecdotal reports of it here too. There are also many posts here about histamine and tics if you do a search.
