Eating candida friendly foods does slow things down, but as long as you are adding probiotics and continuing to kill off the yeast, eventually you will contain the overgrowth. But yes, continuing an unhealthy diet will just let it all grow back again...however one can return to eating healthy carbs etc afterward....it is the refined and processed carbs and sugars that are the worst offenders. It's good to have a plan when eradicating candida, ie have your meals planned and prepare for die off reactions with good anti-tox remedies etc. That book I recommended has great recipes to help you have tasty, nourishing food that is not feeding the yeast. Die off is unpleasant, but it is part of the healing process after candida overgrowth. One just has to stick with the plan to get a positive outcome. I did mention before and will say again that the best path to success is a slow and steady one, allowing each thing to take effect and work, and trying one thing at a time so that you have a clear picture of what is helping and what is not. Are you following up with your doctor on the die off symptoms?
-
Yes, we have had members pass through here who have discovered that dietary modifications/GIT healing was the right treatment for their child. Not every child that tics is deficient in various supplements. Most of the nutritional supps discussed here are specific to TS rather than to tics caused by other triggers.

The book by Walker & Trowbridge "The Yeast Syndrome" has a great recipe section at the back with lots of good food ideas and substitutes to maintain a Candida eradication diet. When we were doing this it made things so much easier for me as my son was only 10 at the time and protested greatly at not being allowed some of his favorite foods!
-
yes it is a very good idea to go slow and remember to keep the diet free of the foods that candida thrives on! I don't recall if your son is dairy free but kefir is an excellent dietary probiotic to use to help boost the good bacteria that aid in getting rid of those toxins. The Lifeway plain kefir is from A2 casein milk producing cows, believed to be less allergenic than the commonly found A1

Yes you can start to see die off reactions immediately, and yes the symptoms you describe can be related to die off. I assume he has no citrus allergies? also that the grapefruitseed extract has no bad "other ingredients"
-
die off varies from individual to individual but basically it ranges from nausea, brain fog, increased tics and other symptoms It is really a good idea to use a probiotic to keep the good bacteria up to help restore GIT health. We like kefir (by Lifeway) best as my son always reacted poorly to those high potency probiotic supps Drink lots of water. Epsom Salts baths help with the detox. We used special homeopathic remedies to help with the detox from die off along with acupuncture, chinese cupping, biofeedback etc Also Milk Thistle as a liver cleanser. Hot fresh lemon juice is excellent too.(1/2 lemon squeezed into cup of hot water)

Grapefruit seed extract is said to be a very effective anti-fungal and doesn't mess with the "good" gut bacteria which is a big plus! and it does other beneficial things too. Just be sure to stick to the recommended dose. It can interact with some medications http://www.rxlist.com/grapefruit-page3/supplements.htm

ps meant to also add the Wikipedia link about Nystatin for you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nystatin

I like the book "The Yeast Syndrome" by Walker & Trowbridge. Personally, I would never use Nystatin. It works by disrupting the fungal cell membranes to cause leakage of contents, so killing the fungus. Herxing seems to be greater due to this mechanism from what I have gathered. It is not non toxic as far as I am aware, and it does have potential side effects. Antibiotic drugs are produced the same way that it is so it is considered a drug, rather than a natural substance, and it has to be prescribed. http://www.drugs.com/cdi/nystatin.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nystatin logismom, we initially used just magnesium capryllate and dietary modification which was very helpful, but it was not till we used candida clear that we finally got rid of the candida overgrowth. Now just using natural antimicrobials in diet (coconut oil, raw honey, garlic etc) has prevented further overgrowth.

Cara you should not be all worried because of my comments, but only reconsider because *you* have read and decided based on the info about the method of working of the drug and it's potential side effects. If you trust your doctor, and she feels it is safe for your child, then you should follow her advice. My posts were only to point out why many others here have decided against using it. As you had posted mentioning only "nausea" as a reason not to continue using it, I just wanted to be sure you had actually looked at the way it works and also at the rest of the potential side effects.
-
Did you read how Nystatin works? Also the other side effects? Nausea is not the only potential problem. Of course, you should do whatever you feel is best.

Hi My son was 11 when he first used Candida Clear and he was fine with it, but we did use it under supervision of his integrative doctor. As with all anti-fungals for candida, it is best used in combination with a good diet, designed to starve the candida "yeast" . We used The Yeast Syndrome book by Walker & Trowbridge as a dietary basis though we did not follow it in the exact phases they recommend. great recipes in the book as well as so much info on candida You should always be prepared for die off aka herxing as when the candida dies, it releases toxins which can exacerbate things for a bit. We minimzed die off by using detox remedies, epsom salts baths and excellent acupuncture, Chinese cupping and other detox aids.

A number of members here decided against Nystatin and instead opted for more natural anti-fungals for candida. Nystatin is a drug. It works by weakening the fungal cell membrane, allowing the cell contents to leak out, so killing the fungus. Not something I would want to do to an already compromised system! http://www.drugs.com/cdi/nystatin.html

As the study was JAMA Psychiatry, plus given PsychCentral's longtime position at the forefront of online mental health sites, I really do hope this will get "mainstream" attention........hopefully not just by the media, but by the medical community too.

I don't know if I have mentioned this to you before but some people with TS tic more when they are on fish oil even though they do fine eating the types of fish that the oil comes from There really is no predictable course with TS...it varies from individual to individual. One thing is certain...you can never make the assumption that it will get worse and you can always have the hope that it will get better. Plus, especially in a child so young, tics frequently resolve mysteriously on their own
-
He may be having a chlorine reaction? or yes, it may be candida. You can rub coconut oil on candida rash as it has anti fungal properties Best he get out of those trunks and shower or better yet, epsom salts bath asap after swimming imho

mitochondrial methylation dysfunction
Chemar replied to cara615's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
if his tics increased with 5HTP I would discontinue it. Not everyone can handle it and it is pretty potent. Many people prefer inositol in young kids especially as it is a B vitamin and has a much gentler way of increasing serotonin If you do a search on methylation you will find quite a few threads on this forum too, though yes, the PANDAS parents have a lot of info on this, especially on the genetics/mutations that cause it. -
Welcome to the forum I am just bumping your post up for replies.

Family history of tics and Tourette on hubby's side but mostly into the arts, no engineers or mathemeticians that I am aware of. Writers, artists, musicians primarily. Son's dad is pretty good with math but not mechanically minded at all! Lots of scientists on my side, but more the biological sciences, and quite a few medical doctors & researchers, as well as many in the arts and education fields.

Updates from members - successes or not
Chemar replied to kcjstaine's topic in Tourette Syndrome and Tics
I do just want to mention that where I agree that good nutrition is an essential component to maintaining health and healing disease.......this too is not the "magic cure" for all tic problems. We have had many posters pass through here who have tried all the nutritional suggestions (which btw go back years in multiple threads here) and where yes, many have found it a good thing for overall health, sometimes kids tic for other reasons, and so those issues do need to be dealt with primarily. And for some kids with genetic Tourette Syndrome, nomatter how perfect their diet and environment, some still have waxing phases of their tics. Personally, I do feel there is some inherent "trigger" that is just not identified yet...but still...we have had some posters become very despondent here when they were told that changing diet or adding supplements or whatever else has been helpful for others would help their child too...only to find it did not. So I always add a word of caution that not everyone responds the same way to the same treatment or modifications. Do I personally feel that nutritional changes are important?...most definitely.!!..in fact, I consider them essential, even if they don't bring THE fix on their own. My own son's dramatic improvement and transition from multiple supplements to obtaining most of what he needs from food has been documented here for years! But I know from experience that I cannot tell everyone else that this will work the same way it has for my son...only suggest they try it as imho cleaning up diet and environment is always a good thing, whether people have health problems or not -
I just wanted to remind everyone that we have a Member Intros Forum now that some newbies are posting to...perhaps if you have time you could pop in there, say Hi and maybe guide them to this forum if that is relevant thanks here is the link http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=21

No personal experience with this but you may want to search the generic name as well as the brands Tenex (most commonly used) and Intuniv(extended release form) I know there are past threads about Tenex here.
