  1. thanks for posting this Caryn even tho my son did not show any corn allergy when tested, he knows that corn is bad for both his tics, OCD and especially his Crohn's and he has been totally corn free for some time now and feels it is essential for him I am not at all surprised to read this report. GM anything scares me along with the way corn, in some form or another, has been added into just about everything one finds on the supermarket shelves
  2. Hi and welcome if you have a history of tics it is possible that this is genetic however that still means there may be specific things triggering the tics we have some very helpful threads added in our pinned section http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2459 I have documented the things that have helped my son and have the link in my signature below re wheat....only those who have gluten or wheat allergy or intolerance have to avoid it. My son eats wholewheat products with no problems at all and when we did an elimination diet and testing, he was fine with wheat products. You may want to try elimination and see for yourself if your children are sensitive to wheat, as testing alone doesnt always reveal this. Some people may not show allergy when tested, yet still be intolerant
  3. IMHO= in my humble opinion IMO = in my opinion
  4. my goodness! no I had no idea that they ask for that much even before you have the appt It really saddens me when $ seems to be a primary focus with Doctors dealing with desperate parents! I would suggest you post on the PANDAS forum about finding help that would be covered by insurance, or if Dr K is covered, but that you have to claim back yourself. I honestly dont know but the many parents there would
  5. Hi Tigger one of the top PANDAS docs is in Chicago parents on our PANDAS forum can tell you more about him..he is known as Dr K (Dr. Kovacevic) http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showforum=17 here is his website http://www.webpediatrics.com (phone consults are possible)
  6. welcome triciamarie yes, I do encourage you to investigate all the many potential triggers for tics/behavioral issues here before just accepting a Tourette or even aspergers diagnosis! start with our helpful threads compilation http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2459 and just keep asking questions. We are represented here by parents whose children have tics for many different reasons and so we join together to try to help each other put the individual pieces of our children's health puzzle together hope you will find the answers you need to help your child too
  7. Hi Bev and welcome well, all I can say is I have never heard of scenar and I have been involved with Tourette/tics for over a decade now! I tend to become sceptical whenever people claim they have 100% "cured" TS helped make it much better? yes! absolutely!! but these too good to be true claims IMHO are just that...especially when they come with a high $ tag attached however as this is something I had never heard of till you posted about it, I would be interested to hear more than just that one "testimonial" from someone with a vested interest in promoting it It seems it is primarily a pain relieving treatment http://www.scenartech.com/whatisscenar/index.html In the meantime, do start looking at the free testimonials here about various things that can and do help with tics. There are many causes for tics, not just Tourette Syndrome, and so you may find that what is triggering your son's tics is easily treatable
  8. Hi yes, Inositol and Niacin are two completely different B vitamins Inositol is usually started at 500mg/day my son has never tolerated niacin given separately or in B complex. It seems ok in his multivitamin tho
  9. welcome Cathy only a doctor would really be able to dx Aspergers many people with TS have OCD as well and often the two blend, sometimes referred to as tourettic OCD maybe start by looking at our helpful threads section pinned to the top of the board I have to head out but will try to post more for you later. just wanted to welcome you for now
  10. not a good idea to take especially the multi (with B's) on an empty stomach. only samE needs an empty tummy to be most effective. I think that may be why you had nausea...adding the inositol(which is a B vitamin) on an empty stomach taurine is usually taken for tics, not OCD. many people find it greatly reduces tics depending on how much you already get from your multi you may want to also add methyl B12 (NOT cyanocobalamin which is likely in the multi) as well as extra B6 (we prefer the P-5-P) form are you taking omega 3? some people tolerate fishoil version but for some it increases tics (like for my son) we use flaxseed oil instead.
  11. Hi Lele the health stores make pure breads (wholefoods and Chamberlins plus some of the smaller local stores often carry good breads too) Fresh and frozen there is always the option of making your own bread if possible
  12. Faith have you ever had him tested for Epstein Barr virus? swollen glands can sometimes be caused by that -- it is the virus that causes mononucleosis, tho not everyone who has EB manifests mono
  13. IMO it would trigger more tics if he is already showing photosensitive induced tics strobe lights can trigger stuff even in people who dont have neuro probs so not worth the risk
  14. Hi thisis why I did suggest you talk to your doctor before combining any supps that increase serotonin my son takes samE and Inositol together in that dose without problem BUT individuals react differently to the same supps samE is taken on an empty stomach (30 min before eating) but the other supps, including inositol are usually taken with or after a meal if you are taking all your supps on empty stomach that could cause nausea also, abruptly reducing your samE by half that way may be a factor if the nausea continues perhaps you should drop the inositol and see how you feel one should allow 2 weeks for the effect of a supp to be felt
  15. The Newman's Own brand Ranch dressing is delicious and has no MSG or HFCS. I have even seen Newman's salad dressing at WalMart, Target etc as well as Publix supermarkets we get organic Greenwise ketchup that is pure and good at our local Publix and I know Wholefoods has good brands too Publix and WholeFoods also have BlueSky natural sodas with no HFCS or color etc, and lots of healthy cereals, cookies and other ingredients that dont have the garbage in them. I am not sure what other states Publix supermarkets are in, but their GreenWise organic range is excellent and not much more expensive than the "regular" stuff
  16. he had a lot of bloodwork done when younger but no immune problems detected then never been blood tested for mycoplasma as he has developed blood draw phobia since hearing about how many people have developed RSD from phlebotomy It did not specifically show in his transdermal radiogenics testing tho (similar to NAET, last done 2006) but that doesnt mean he hasnt been exposed to it. He did show +ve for Epstein Barr
  17. Hello Hope I bumped up an old thread that is a good compilation of things to consider asking about http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1211 also take a look at our other helpful threads http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2459
  18. bumping up for newbies
  19. welcome back lele and glad it was a good trip if your son's tics seemed to return after you got home you may want to strongly consider that you have some major trigger in your home environement some things to investigate: do you have a lot of arsenic treated wood in the home? (cabinets, floors, wall covering, doors etc) do you have new carpeting? (usually high in formaledyde) is your water supply heavily chlorinated? and most importantly, is there a chance there may be areas of mold in the home? there are many other portential environmental triggers but those are some that come to mind as anecdotally reported here in the past as potential tic triggers what about diet? is he eating something here that he didnt eat there?
  20. Hi I just wanted to welcome you, altho I dont have any info on Michigan doctors I dont know if our pinned thread on finding medical help can assist http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=565 you may also want to look at some of our helpful threads re dietary modifications sometimes helping to stop tics. So often kids are dx with Tourette Syndrome when in fact there are other things triggering tics we have a member Caryn here who can give you a lot of good info on gluten and tics, as well as other dietary/GIT issues that tigger tics. here is the link to some of our helpful threads for newbies http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2459
  21. you are very welcome and yes, the OCD component of my son's TS has actually always bothered him a lot more than his tics, so taking supps to help has really been very good for him re doses, best to check with your doc if you are going to take more than the recommended dose. The Jarrow Inositol powder is the best we have found. We get all our supps at iherb.com as even with shipping it is much cheaper than most health stores Vitamin Shop inositol capsules are our 2nd choice Jarrow also make a 200mg samE (as well as a 400mg one), and you can also get 200mg samE in the Origin brand at Target my son is now 20yo and has no probs driving
  22. yes Guy I am VERY sure dopamine is the neurotransmitter that people with TS are hypersensitive too, NOT deficient in people with TS do NOT want more dopamine they DO often need more serotonin, especially if they have comorbid OCD
  23. IF you have OCD then you want to increase serotonin BUT over increasing it is dangerous therefore it is better to only use ONE supp at a time and start at the lowest dose and work up to max recommended our doctor suggested it was safe to take inositol and methionine OR samE together @ 500mg methionine OR 200mg samE plus 500mg to max 1 gm of Inositol you should NEVER take 5HTP or tryptophan with another supp (or med) that also increases serotonin without first consulting your doctor as their effect is dramatic! and you CANNOT EVER take 5HTP and tryptophan together --- only one OR the other. taking them together is very very dangerous!
  24. serotonin is the neurotransmitter that is usually deficient in people with TS/OCD Inositol is a B vitamin that helps to raise serotonin levels and is often the supplement of choice as it has a gentle action with minimal side effects unless one takes mega high doses for too long 5htp and tryptophan are part of the conversion pathway to serotonin so taking them (both are otc supplements, not meds) helps increase serotonin they are far more potent than inositol so need to be used with caution methionine is an amino acid that helps increase serotonin. samE is adenosyl methionine one should always be very careful about combining things that increase serotonin as too much results in serotonin spiking which can be very dangerous!
  25. Hi Faith nope he doesnt even get colds etc. No other illnesses either. Overall very healthy, and especially now with both his Crohn's and TS so stable. He used to always have sensitive tummy stuff even bf the Crohn's onset. Had a lot of ear infections as a little one(not on a lot of antibiotics tho) and got ear tubes aged 2 plus adenoids removed then. Not much other illness tho...he had chicken pox aged 3. no known strep ever. not sure what you mean by immune "work ups"? and yes, I did question whether the immune "boosting" supps and omega 6 could have triggered the Crohn's but was told by the GI specialist it was unlikely. The naturopath believes Crohn's is triggered by a microbe, likely Mycoplasma, and has a theory about this being the case for most autoimmune disorders. Others feel autoimmunity is genetically inherited. Many theories abound
