chrisw Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 Hi All, Wanted to pass along some info to you about the H1N1 vaccine. I spoke with Diana P. yesterday, and she told me that a 5yr. old Pandas child whose symptoms were under control with antibiotics got a flu vaccine (either a combo of regular flu and H1N1 or just H1N1) and is now in a MAJOR exacerbation. She said that this is not someone who posts on here and she wanted me to post this for your info. I don't know any other details other than this. Thought you should know. Christie

Christie Hi Christie (& Diana) - Thank you SO much for the warning ! Just talked to my sons neurologist, who warned me not to give my 9year old PANDASson the H1N1 vaccine too, given that both the thimerosol and the adjuvant in the vaccine (as well as the virus in the vaccine itself) might lead to a PANDAS exacerbation. Praying that the 5year old PANDAS child will soon be better ! Best wishes - PANDAS_Denmark
dee45 Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 Thanks Christie, wasn't planning on my son getting it so glad to see some validation that I am making the right decision. thanks Deanna
Kayanne Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 Chris, Thanks for that info. Are you under the impression that more specific info will be forthcoming (eg. flu shot or H1N!..what manufacturer...nasal mist or shot?) Or was this just a general warning that Diana wanted to get out? There are some pediatric flu vaccines that are preserative free...was just curious as to the brand/what type and such... Thanks again! ~Karen
Megs_Mom Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 So is the H1N1 Vaccine even out yet? I thought it was not available till sometime in November, but maybe at risk kids are getting somewhere. Also, did she feel pretty confident that she did not have a strep exposure coincidentally? I understand if you don't have this info, but I am very interested in the details. Best -
lss Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 The H1N1 vaccine is out in certain States. When I asked Dr. Latimer if we should get it, she said no, and that she herself and her children would not be getting it! The government did the nose mist first, and this will provide what they call "herd immunity" to the public. So we may all not have a choice. Linda
EAMom Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 I should add that our friends (non-pandas) recently gave their 2 sons the flu-mist (reg. flu) and 1- 2 days later both are at home with 102 degree fevers! (They did the flu-mist b/c the doctor was out of the reg. shots.
thereishope Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 H1N1 vaccine is here in Ohio. It is currently being given at schools, hospital staff, etc. High schools have already received it and my elementary school will start getting next week. Believe it or not they are doing the LIVE nasal vaccine at the schools. That is totally unacceptable. My kids had H1N1 already, so I don't think I need to pull them out of school after the vaccine is given to the other children. I think a lot of people will have H1N1 and never realize it. My neighbor's kids got it last week and they are still going to vaccinate! I tried to explain that they don't have to do that, but people are set in their thinking. I hope that little boy recovers fast.

Vickie, that's why I am so frustrated that last year when I am pretty sure my pandas ds had it (30 kids in his grade were out with the exact symptoms of it) but the doctors weren't testing because symptoms weren't severe so now I don't know if ds had it or not. I didn't think about it much until the vaccine talk...... if they are short on vaccines, maybe they should have thought about that before and tested everyone when they had symptoms so that they could rule out giving them the vaccine... Although I saw a dr. on tv the other day whose son was getting over the swine flu and he said he was vaccinating him anyway because he didn't have enough proof that his son would still be immune to it. This might be a stupid question but is there a way to test our kids to see if they are already immune to this? Like if we suspect they already had it?
EAMom Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 This might be a stupid question but is there a way to test our kids to see if they are already immune to this? Like if we suspect they already had it? I called a doctor (since the advice nurse didn't know) a month or 2 ago, as I had the same quesiton...he said "no...there is no test to see if your child has already had H1N1".
thereishope Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 They did not test my kids because they said the test was too expensive and the accuracy is very low. I look at the symptoms my kids had along w/ going around in school and I know that's what they had.The dr said they put it down as the regular flu, but seasonal flu hasn't hit Cincinnati yet so, therefore, it is H1N1, but they cannot write that down since they don't actually test for it. Talk about a run around answer. Good news, you are suppose to have immunity to it once you had H1N1.

Talk about a run around answer. Good news, you are suppose to have immunity to it once you had H1N1. I guess the good news is I am pretty sure ds had it. The thing that is weird to me is that if it's so contagious why didn't anyone else in our house get it... I have 2 other kids.. meanwhile 30 kids in his grade (30 out of 120 kids) had the same thing... yet the teachers didn't get it either. It was in June. What scares me is that my 2 year old non pandas ds has asthma and the pulmonologist said he very strongly wants me to vaccinate him against the h1n1 when it is available for us... But I really really don't want to... .but my dh and the dr. are really pushing for it and I think I might have to on this. I finally did cave with him and get him the regular flu shot last month.
thereishope Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 My husband was the only one that didn't contrat it. Swine flu did hit the United States before. I think in 1974 so some people may already have a natural immunity. My husband was born in 1969 so that might be why he didn't get it.
faith Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 I have a really dumb question,...but....what is the big deal of someone gets the flu or even swine flu? Is that what these flu shots are for? so you don't get it? I can understand for elderly people, but... just saying. Am I wrong to think its no big deal? Faith
EAMom Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 I'm pretty sure that dh and I both got H1N1 as well... dh at the same time the kids were sick and me a few days after everyone else. The symptoms were mild, a couple of days of fatigue (maybe some cough etc/I don't remember) but no high fevers like the kids. So, I do think some people can get H1N1 with minimal symptoms, and not necessarily know they have it.
