I think my baby has food sensitivities

I think my baby has food sensitivities. His eyes always have dark circles under them. I'm not for sure if that's from food sensitvities or if he's not getting enough sleep. He rarely sleeps more than an hour at a time. At night we nurse hourly. We seem to do that during the day too. He's has some happy time when he's awake, but he gets pretty fussy. So where do you think I start with cutting out foods since I'm sensitive to almost every food on the planet?

hi carolyn,

ick, hard one. I'd probably just start with what you eat most of, (onions and garlic are ringing a bell) and maybe the ones that are known to cause gas? why do you think he may be sensitive? does he go regular or seem constipated?

The breastfeeding consultant said that he might be sensitive to something I'm eating or getting a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. His poops are green, and he poops once a day usually. He's not colicky because he will stop crying usually. I haven't had any dairy yesterday or today and he seems to be doing better. We'll just see, but I'm going to be really careful with what I eat.

carolyn,

undereye circle, not sleeping more than an hr at a time, and nurse every hr., i agree w/you that he may have some food sensitivity.

you mention poop once daily & green & pretty fussy. chamomilla, a homeopathic remedy comes to mind. green poop is one of the keynote symptoms. since your baby is just born, you may want to consider treating him homeopathically w/a classically trained homeopath becuz it is much easier to cured w/o any previous treatments.

btw, have you thought about vaccinations? sorry to ask, and i know it is a very personally & touchy subject, but if i had a chance to do it over again, i would be more selective and use a different vaccination schedule. at this pt., i am not so sure if i would refuse all vaccinations.

hope you & your baby are doing well.

My son was born in early November and he reacted to my pumpkin pie eating habit!! So, yes, make sure you are keeping a food journal of what you eat and how he seems to be acting/reacting.

hope you are able to quickly identify sensitivities Carolyn. Isnt it a blessing to have the foresight that you have gained from your own experiences to now be proactive for your baby :)

re chamomille...I have never used it homeopathic way,but did always give my kids chamomille tea from infanthood, including while nursing. It is excellent for digestive and nervous system calming. I bathed them adding strained chamomille tea to water and also used Weleda chamomille baby products on skin etc.

How old is your baby? Since he is not sleeping for more than an hour at a clip, do you think he is in the midst of a growth spurt or has he always been like this? Is he gaining weight and growing at an acceptable rate? How long is he nursing? Is he nursing the entire time? Do you carry him around in one of the snuggly things? Some babies need that constant touch. I nursed all 3 of my babies. I constantly carried my third in the snuggly. For the first month, he slept on my chest. Also, he is only pooping once a day? I am wondering if he is nursing long enough. It sounds like, as you said, that he may just be getting the foremilk and not enough of the hindmilk. Are you still taking a multivitamin?

We are not doing vaccinations at this time. In fact, we aren't even doing well baby visits. I took Aiden to the one at 3 days since he hadn't been seen by a doctor (free standing birth center birth) yet and took him to his 2 week visit. I skipped the month well baby visit deciding it's better to keep a healthy child out of a sick doctor's office. I'm looking for individual care rather than the day-care I planned on that way he's not around so many sick kids and I can nurse him at lunch.

Yes, it's great to have my own experiences to be proactive for my baby. I will try the chamomille (maybe in our bath water).

My baby will be 8 weeks tomorrow. I don't think he's in a growth spurt unless they last for 2 weeks +. He's gaining weight very well. He's gained 3 pounds since birth (once he lost that first bit the first few days)...gaining too much possibly that's why we were doing block feedings, but now they suggested maybe he does need both sides at once. He's a quick nurser. 5-10 minutes. I measured it one time and in his short 5 minute nursing session he got about 2 ounces. Yes, I carry him around in a ring sling and a moby wrap. He sleeps on my chest for part of the night, but now that we nurse lying down he sleeps alot right by my side. I'm still taking my prenatal vitamin.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been off of dairy & gluten for over a week now, and things are so much better! It's like night & day with Aiden. He's taking 2 hour naps, can be put down in a swing or bouncy seat and actually enjoy it for more than 2-5 minutes, and I can get some things done because he's content after nursing. I'm think that we are going to say goodbye to soy also because he did have one very fussy period today along with a green poop that had a lot of mucus in it. We've added a breastfeeding & food allergies parenting group into our monthly schedule now also just to get some support from others, talk to other going through the same thing, and maybe some tips every now and then for good food products, etc. The group meets at the breastfeeding consultants place that we've been going to since Aiden was 3 days old. Everyone knows us there by name. That's probably because sometimes I feel like we live there, especially in those first 6-7 weeks.
