Hi

I was wondering if it is common for children to also tic while sleeping. My son starting showing severe tics 4 months ago and I have recently noticed that he does show some tics while he sleeps. Does anyone have feedback on this?

Thanks!

What kind of movements does he have? Is it like restless leg syndrome, limb jerking? Or is it facial?

Hi

He has head movements. He will pin his chin down to his chest and then throw his head back.

Hi Janene

the only time my son appears to be totally tic free is when asleep. However he has always been somewhat of a restless sleeper, but his tossing/turning is very different from his tics

he has Tourette Syndrome.

Hello Janene and welcome,

Can you give a little more like how old your son is and what you consider severe tics? I'm wondering how he can complete that action with his head on the pillow? Are you sure he is sound asleep, or could this be while he is trying to fall asleep -- he may be aware he is doing it because he is still sort of awake. Any other tics or behavioral symptoms? Are you just starting looking into ways to treat him? Thanks,

I am no doctor, but i think it is very common. When my daughter first showed signs of tics she had many tics in her sleep and it was so scary...now she does sometimes but not as much anymore---

janene,

Welcome!

When my son had the acute onset of head shaking & nodding tic. He used to have slight head nodding while he is sleeping. That was short lived - probably lasted about a month. I don't really remember now, but i think when we first started acunpuncture, it slowly went away as the tic also slowly to subside.

Hope this helps.

Janene,

According to "authorities," people do not tic while sleeping. According to other "authorities," many people with tic disorders do tic during sleep. I think the field is pretty evenly divided too; so it is probably an individual thing. Hope this gives you some comfort.

And welcome.

Bruxism (teeth grinding) is a tic, and it is certainly one experienced by many as they sleep. So whatever the brain is doing to make the teeth grinding happen, maybe the brain would do to allow other tics. Just a thought.

Hi Calicat

bruxism isnt always associated with tics and can also occur in people who have no history of tic disorders

my son had bruxism which *was a tic* and which was helped by vit B5/pantothenic acid....but again, he did not grind when asleep, only when awake. We observed to be sure as doc wanted to give him mouthguard but he wasnt grinding in sleep

perhaps it is the TS tics that calm when asleep and other tics dont???

my son has never ticced while asleep - when his tics were at their worst we always new when he was asleep as the room would finally be still and silent. I have heard of other's ticcing while asleep.

As a TS sufferer myself, I tic in my sleep (or so my now ex partner says anyway). The tics were mainly head nodding and blinking apparently, with a few small grunting sounds.
