JuliaFaith
Amazingly, we got an appt. for my ds in this dr. office (not with him). She said that they had treated several PANDAS cases. She said that we might want to remove tonsils. This was shocking coming from an ND! My son has never had a pos. on step or myco but she said that does not mean that his tonsils are not harboring bacteria. Their testing was very interesting (electromagnetic driven). The testing was very specific for my son and so treatment/protocol should not be followed by others without going thru the testing. She is treating his lungs (has had 3 cough/colds since Feb. all neg. for mico). She is treating lungs for possible mold, micoplasma, and Babesia. We are having a nebulizer sent tomorrow so he can inhale steam daily from TriQuench. It says on our instruction, that he has to do for a year. She is treating his extreme GI inflammation with the following (his other Dr. has him on HCL probiotics too): Ketotifen (prescription and she says patients love this) Flora Stor (probiotic) Beta Glucan (probiotic) Lactoferrin (anti-inflamm.) Melatonin (5 mg every night-helps with GI problems) For lyme, which he has not been diagnosed with yet, she prescribed Rock Rose/Cistus tea. For nutrient support she recommended the following: Thorne Vit. K2 Selenium synergy CORE Vit. D drops She also said that he needs to start taking all of this as quickly as possible so "a leg of table" does not collapse. Apparently, they all work in concert with one another so should be taken during the same time frame. We are also doing a hair analysis for heavy metals. Blood draw for thyroid panel and CD-57 for lyme. Our other Dr. has him on Circumin/vitamins/EFA/glutamine/clay. We return in 3 weeks to adjust his treatment accordingly. philamom
Interesting. Please keep us updated! Did she say why Melatonin would help the GI inflammation?
Chemar
Melatonin (5 mg every night-helps with GI problems) I am not trying to negate your ND but I wonder at that dose? Melatonin is a HORMONE! and where it can, and does, have benefit in certain conditions......... 5mg daily is IMHO a very high dose for a developing child. My concern is it can alter the reproductive functioning!! Melatonin is usually given for sleep/relaxation/anti-anxiety. But this is the first I have heard of it being prescribed specifically for GIT. In fact, one of it's adverse side effects can be abdominal cramping. Perhaps the doc is suggesting it for it's immune boosting or possible ant-inflamm properties? melatonin is found naturally in the GIT and I found this related to it's GIT function http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/18812627 and http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17928638 do also note that it can interfere with immunosuppressant and other medications http://www.mayoclini...effects/AN01717 Obviously, your doctor knows more about your child than I do, and may be spot on with this prescription, but I always believe parents should be fully informed on the pros AND cons of anything, med or supplement, so felt it important to mention this Edited October 31, 2010 by Chemar adding link
JuliaFaith
Interesting. Please keep us updated! Did she say why Melatonin would help the GI inflammation? Just looked at her notes and it says "Heals GI mucosae."

It is interesting that some melatonin has animal products that can carry viruses! Neither of our dr. have checked out the one we are using. It is from 'whole foods' and says it is ok for vegetarians but still would like to get this checked out. We thought the dosage was a bit high as well. Thank you for your insight! smartyjones
[i am not trying to negate your ND but I wonder at that dose? 5mg daily is IMHO a very high dose for a developing child. julia -- thanks for posting. i am very interested in dr. klinghardt so i'm so happy to hear info about your visit. please keep posting your experiences. following chemar's thoughts . . . just our experience -- my 8 year-old, non-pandas, 80 lb son -- sometimes has trouble falling asleep. we've had success with melatonin. i cut the 1 mg pill in half and he's OUT in 1/2 hour. so he's getting .5 mg. could they have meant .5 instead of 5? lyme_mom
That's interesting. How old is your son? I am curious how old a child has to be for the cd57 to be useful.
JuliaFaith
Thank you for all your kinds words and information. The CD-57 is a vit. D test apparently, so not sure where the lyme test is in the ones coming up (hair/urine). Have an older son in the hospital, so not much time to reply to each entry. Will keep you posted. Another appt. in 3-weeks. Will be interesting to see what his primary care dr. has to say about all of this. We see her Friday.
lyme_mom
The cd 57 test measures a subset if white blood cells not vitamin d. The 25 hydroxy is a vitamin d test- could you have them mixed up?

The 25 hydroxy is a vitamin d test- could you have them mixed up? You know, I am beginning to think that the CD-57 was left off the blood draw request form. We did get in at the end of the day when the Dr. was supposed to be done. Will double-check on this tomorrow. Thank you for noticing this.
