  3. Elimination diets are not expensive. They are just hard to do especially for children. It knocks out all their favorite foods and makes birthday parties really hard. This is a major problem if the child is in school and has to watch all his classmates eating his favorite foods. It did not work for my son and created more problems - he would not comply. He started begging food from friends and neighbors etc. If I lived on 100 acre farm away from everyone, it might have worked. You need to eliminate all the highly allergic foods for 4 days and then introduce them one at a time and look for reactions. This website lists the problem foods http://www.cfids.org/archives/1998/pre-1999-article01.asp#diet. Good luck.
  4. It could be a fungus infection that can cause white spots. Look up tinea versicolor or pityriasis versicolor. It's common in Texas hot and humid.
  5. My brother had a wheat allergy and he would get migraines after eating wheat. He had asthma and ended up in the hospital a couple of times because of wheat. My father did an eliminated diet and figured it out. They removed wheat from his diet for 10 years and now he has outgrown it. It was hard back then especially at birthday parties.
  6. The survey doesn't address the issue of people with unstable moods. My son cannot take stimulants or SSRI without a mood stabilizer. They make him manic and I would have to say that they makes things worse. But if he takes depakote or another anti-seizure med then he can tolerate stimulants and SSRI and they would be helpful. Then you get into the issue of taking more meds to treat side effects. UGH... This is a big problem for people with unstable moods or who are bipolar. Thanks for creating and taking the survey.
  7. Making birthday cards early, my son does the same thing. He starts his birthday list and Christmas list in May and even makes his younger brother's list too. That way they can team up on me and make sure they don't miss out on the latest and greatest. He makes powerpoint presentations, and collect pics from the internet to make sure I don't make any mistakes. He will even watch the newspaper ads so that I will get a good deal and then can buy even more. He knows I will only spend x number of dollars for each of them. He loves the buy 2 and get one free ads. My husband and I just shake our heads. It keeps him busy so this gives me a break. Hope things get better. I cannot offer you any more advice than you have already read about here on the forum. Take a deep breath. How's the weather, it is HOT here in Texas.
  8. I'm really surprised, because Dr D Holder was trained at TCH and she rolled her eyes the whole time I was explaining my son's condition to her and described me as having emotional lability. I really feel for anyone in Pittsburg. Goggle dates this study from Jan.
  9. Do a search for free online university courses. Mit, Stanford, etc have old lectures available online for free. You can look over the different courses (like auditing for free) and this will help you to decide what you want to take later. Do you know how to cook? It's a great skill to have especially if you want to have a family - experiment now and not on your future husband. It's one of these things that is always evolving. There are a lot foodies out in the real world. Collect some recipes so you won't starve at college - food always helps you to make friends. Crockpots are easy to use - rachael ray has recipes online. They are good for people on the go. Collect family holiday recipes and make a book. Great present for mom. You'll be too busy later to do it. My dad is addicted to youtube. Pick a hobby, activity, or project and there will probably be a video about it. Some are informative and some are unbelievable - lol. A lot of libraries offer free courses. I am trying to think of things for free - now for money the sky is the limit.
  10. Breastfed 3 months. He was a 12 hour sleeper and would not wake up to eat. I had to quit it so too painful - had trouble pumping.
  11. My neighbor was highly allergic to poison ivy. Her dogs would get it running in the fields. She use to get shots because she could not avoid the exposure without giving up dogs. It really worked for her but she was not a panda. One of my friend's son has mild tics plus ADHD and he has mold and cedar allergies - also impossible to avoid in Texas. The shots really made a difference for him. No problems - just time - must go once every week. Don't know of any pandas treated for allergies. Sorry.
  12. Best wishes. Thanks for all your hard work. Tell Kathy "Texas says Hi". Break a leg!!!!! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Break_a_leg - for the non-english readers)
  13. You need to find out how and why she was familiar with PANDAS. I would like to have something to present to my dentist. I tried to get antibiotics for my son years ago but no one listened. I'm so happy for you and your child. Lots of luck!
  14. I'm so happy for you. You're one smart mommy!!
  15. Article on risperdol changing brain development in mice: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100128142145.htm
  16. When DS first became sick, we used Tenex. It worked wonders. My son had lost impulse control. I would try Tenex first before risperdol. Article talks about how tenex works in the brain: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070420143324.htm Article talks about tenex and adhd: http://www.tsagw.org/news/tourettegazette/203-tics-tourettes-and-adhd-part-2
  17. QUOTE: "He is on Risperdal for mood regulation, clonidine for sleep issues, and Lamictal for aggression." I think you meant to say: Lamictal for mood regulation. I know Lamictal and Depakote are used as mood stabilizer. Some people have unstable mood - they cannot take some meds like zoloft, adderdal or ritalin because they make them manic. Risperdal is used for impulse control, tics and aggression. It also helps with mental tics, compulsions and what I call a sticky brain - lack of flexibility (ocd?). Risperdal helps with dopamine and seratonin. My son was on it for impulse control and tics. It really helps my son with quirky behavior (picking and chewing on things)which may be tics or lack of impulse control. The side effect of Risperdal is weight gain. This was never an issue for my son (he is always the exception). In fact, we took him off Risperdal to try Abilify. The doctor said that Abilify was better at regulating dopamine than Risperdal. It did not work for my son - big mistake. He also lost weight fast and we work hard to fatten this kid up and keep him healthy. I can really feel for you and hope you find some help. DS got sick when he was 7 and we found out about PANDAS when he was 8. The only treatment 12 years ago was meds and meds. When DS first became sick, I had him tested for allergies (brother with severe wheat allergy) but the doctors at TCH told me he had minor mold and tree pollen allergies. His nose had started running and he was spitting(tic). They explained to me that allergies don't cause behavior problems and that sometimes children just change (for the worst - like a teenager). We have done the neuro and pys route and he is not getting better or growing out of it. Everytime he gets sicks, things get bad so now we are trying Dr B - a PANDAS immulogist and he takes insurance - so tired of paying out-of-pocket. I have my fingers crossed and have not given up hope. All I can say is keep trying.
  18. I'm sorry your son is not getting better. There was a topic started May 31 by Graceunderpressure you should read. There is a Houston neuro listed and recommended. He can definitely help you with the tics but probably not PANDAS. I have heard good things about him from other sources. In the top of the forum there is "helpful threads for pandas" which lists doctors by state and there is a doctor in Ft Worth who treats PANDAS that is only 4 hours from Houston. Good luck.
  19. Thank you for taking the time to explain all of these insurance pitfalls. I really appreciate it.
  20. I know a family with 2 boys. One developed tourette and ocd when he had his tonsils removed. His brother developed tourette when he fell off a trampoline and hit his head. BBB problem.
  21. Cute. Thanks
  22. Yesterday Monday 7/26/2010 Rachael Ray did a human lab segment on 3 germ killing products. The website shows how they used each product for testing but doesn't show the results. They tested before and after using each product. All of them worked. The 3rd product was a UV toothbrush sanitizer. http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/show/segments/view/human-lab-germ-killers/
  23. I have spent a lot of time with tourette children. All of them are different. Most diagnosed (mild cases are not treated) TS kids have some co-morbid condition and these are the really problems with school (ADHD, OCD etc). The children that have TS are probably on some med which will mask the symptoms - so even if you meet them you will not see the whole picture. Some (not all) TS kids are big ticcers - have loud or lots of physical tics or painful tics. A lot of the TS kids can repress their tics until later so again you will not see the whole picture. Anyhow the point is: There is no poster child for TS. From the info on this forum the PANDAS kids are also different. My panda son and his panda cousin are different - different onsets and different outcomes. As a mom it is v.e.r.y frustrating to do nothing and have to wait for visits to doctors. So try some different things like the following. A lot of the moms find that ibuprofen helps with the pandas symptoms - inflammation. I know it helps with pain from tics. A lot of moms give baths with epsom salt to detox. Have you tried fish oil - omega 3? Do a search on this forum for more info of different things to try - it will make you feel better. Make an appt with DS ped and try to get antibiotics - look for upper respiratory infection - sinus problems (this is Texas everyone has sinus problems). If you cannot see a PANDAS doctor go see an immunologist. I wish I had done this for my son. A lot of these kids have other problems with their immune systems. It's worth checking. Call the Tourette Syndrome of Texas and ask for tips to help your son with his neck tic, ways to ease the pain or reduce the intensity of the tic. If you can afford it, do the Cunningham test. Good luck.
  24. Stay away from Texas Children's Hospital - TCH. They DO NOT believe and will not help you with pandas plus they have l...o...n...g waiting times for appointments. Any ped associated with TCH will also not be able to help because they follow TCH procedures. We are seeking help out-of-state by one of the 5 panda doctors recommended by this forum. Rule out lyme and pandas first. There is lots of info available here. There are a couple of doctors listed in Texas but I have never used them. My son is 19 (got sick at 7 and found out about pandas at 8) and we are running out of time. His life has been on hold for 12 years waiting for help. Good Luck.
  25. I would definitely rule out seizures. Good luck. We don't have those issues. However, one of my son's first symptoms for a strep infection is vomiting - no fever.
