  1. hi Tami yes, I think salicylate sensitivity/tic trigger is likely allergy/intolerance related ( penicillin btw is deadly for me and both my sons. I was exposed as a kid and it was a very severe reaction) my Q re the inflammation/salicylate thing was more because I have gotten the feeling that many more who have posted here over the years *do* notice salicylate sensitivity than dont, and so was intrigued to maybe try to put together some pieces there re the interesting point you made earlier that inflammation may be a common denominator for all of our kids . just thinking out loud and really wasnt trying to pose it as anything other than a question that interested me because of my son seeming to benefit so from it, especially since the Crohn's started
  2. well, rather than edit in to my post above yours Kim, I will post again to avoid confusion I am multitasking today and hubby not well ): so want to correct a statement I made above where I said "I think the genetic makeup determines if and how the individual responds to the triggers" what I want to clarify is that I feel that is the case in many but not all. It came across as a rather sweeping statement which was not my intent I also know without a shadow of doubt that sometimes "perfectly healthy" (if there is such a category ) kids and adults are impacted by things that totally throw their systems for a loop and then many health issues can occur, whether or not they have a genetic link. I am not implying that every illness or allergy or neurological or behavioral disorder is always genetically coded..... only that I do feel strongly re the manifestation of Tourette Syndrome Spectrum of Disorders, that there is a genetic susceptibility that can be triggered by a variety of factors to manifest but back to the inflammation thing....it really is amazing how when one starts to look into it, inflammatory reactions are at the root of soooo much illness! speaking of which.......... I have now got a confirmed rheumatoid arthritis dx for my achy foot.. another autoimmune, inflammatory illness, so am now treating myself on natural arthritis treatment diet and taking those anti-inflammatories listed above for myself too! (oh btw I left out white willow bark, nature's "aspirin" in that list and have edited it in) I have a question re inflammation for those of you chemistry minded researchers.....It is known that salicylates help control inflammation, so how come so many represented here are salicylate sensitive re ticcing?? (my son excluded as he seems to benefit from salicylate containing foods and supps)
  3. Hi Tami yes, I tend to agree re the immune system being out of whack nomatter the root cause of the tics, tho not sure that it is a clearcut inflammatory response for all. I think the genetic makeup determines if and how the individual responds to the triggers re natural anti-inflammatories: I have had to study up a lot on these for my son's Crohn's and this is what he successfully uses to keep the inflammation down Curcumin (from turmeric) Boswellin garlic ginger cayenne (capsaicin) glucosamine omega 3 from flaxseed oil in addition to taking these in supplement form, we have also increased their use in food preparation also white willow bark, a naturally occurring form of salicylate aka "nature's aspirin"
  4. hi again did u ever check out that Orlando pediatrician info I PMd? If ENT is needed, Dr Franz may be able to refer, but may also be able to provide direct help for this. The fact that she is a conventional MD who also has homeopathic/alternative qualifications is a big plus!
  5. oops sorry was skimming thru this morning and thought you were asking whether they were the same in action *blush* the Nature's Herbs Digest-ease form we use is plant derived enzymes. our physician isnt keen on animal source enzymes for a number of reasons re probiotics...we have tried various brands but always return to plain kefir
  6. my son's severe side effects to the drugs were not reported as far as I know. at the time I was way too freaked out to even consider that. all I could think of was saving his life (no melodrama in those words ) and when it was finally all over and we had our son back, I just moved forward with the diet, supplements and other treatments that have helped him In retrospect tho, I wish we had documented everything at the time and had known who to report it to most of the doc's discounted my pleas that what he was going thru was being caused by the drugs and not his TS/OCD and they just kept wanting to rx more drugs to take care of the new stuff being caused by the other drugs only the one psychiatrist listened and understood and agreed and helped me wean him off an excellent book that helped me see light on this Your Drug May Be Your Problem by Peter Breggin MD adding for Michele and all others who are on meds PLEASE know I fully respect your decisions and also absolutely recognize that for many people the meds work as they are supposed to and the side effects are minimal to none my purpose in always stressing the potential dangers is because of our personal experience. Had I been informed fully and advised correctly by the treating physicians, I would likely not have allowed my son to be on any of those psychiatric drugs
  7. They are very different substances and do different things digestive enzymes assist in the breakdown/ metabolism etc of foods our bodies make enzymes to to this naturally but in some these may be deficient or when food intolerances are present, then more enzyme action aids digestion probiotics are "good" bacteria that one ingests to maintain healthy GIT
  8. like clonidine, it is a drug prescribed for high blood pressure but used by some for tics. generic name is guanfacine here is info on it http://www.medicinenet.com/guanfacine-oral/article.htm
  9. and now a study that shows resilience to stress, and therefore lower anxiety levels, is also gentically inherited http://psychcentral.com/news/2008/04/04/ge...iency/2118.html
  10. jas could you maybe add the source link (URL) for that info so we dont get in trouble for copyrighted info not being attributed Some authors/publications get real upset if not cited
  11. couldnt agree more re the clonidine not being worth the risks!! It totally appalls me that the known inflammatory effects of carrageenan cause it to be used to induce inflammation in lab mice, while it is being added as a cheap thickener to whipping cream, ice cream and soooo many other foods (and alert! we even found it in some organic stuff!!!! and have called the manufacturers to complain and educate them!) Hospitals and nursing homes give Boost and Ensure and yep, carrageenan in them too
  12. sure is good to see you Claire and hope all is going well
  13. Hi Michele the 5HTP can make some edgy and restless, but Inositol is in the B vitamin group (vitB8) and is generally very very well tolerated. We started at the lowest dose Inositol (500mg) and found we did not need to go higher Hi Emma, glad you got the zith as we really do hear good reports on it Also hope you saw Claire's note re the timing of the probiotic (Hi Claire ) cos otherwise the antibiotic just destroys the probiotic. Three hours in between is what I have been told IMO it would be best to do the antibiotic first before adding any new supps so that you can more clearly define which is doing what
  14. well done Pamela I like natural kefir best as a probiotic it can be flavored with so many good things and made into a smoothie type fruity thing for kids. I use the Lifeway brand from our supermarket psyllium can make some people very gassy/bloated, but many like it we prefer slippery elm bark capsules
  15. I posted this on another thread today too jas but i like this one best of all the enzymes I have tried. http://www.iherb.com/ProductDetails.aspx?c=1&pid=4490 I also mentioned on the other thread that enzymes seem to flare my son's Crohn's so he doesnt use them anymore
  16. Hi yes the boards are open to be read tho only registered members can post can you PM me as to what you would like to change your user name to and I will ask the webmaster to do it for you you also do have the ability to edit your own posts here if there is any personal info you want to remove.
  17. ((((Kim)))) you are a real gift to this group! ilovedogs, I have been thinking that so much lately too.....with us being proactive and aiming to supplement the deficiencies, eliminate the allergens, eradicate and detoxify from the microbes (bacterial, viral and fungal and who knows which others I am beginning to wonder...the vaccines have microbes in too! ) and the heavy metals and other "loads" on the immune systems and digestive system........all this stuff we do and see good results on.....could this maybe begin the path to genetic healing too for the future generations? Will our children's kids or at least their grandkids be at less of a disadvantage in the susceptibility being encoded into their genes because those things that may aggravate the condition(s) have been corrected?
  18. thank YOU Debbie for the positive feedback it is always such an encouragement for all of us when we see that these changes can make such a big difference for others too hoping things just keep getting better for your little one give yourself a big pat on the back! You were proactive in researching and then implementing what you learned might help, and your child is showing the good results of your diligence.
  19. as many of you know I help administer the NeuroTalk forum we have a separate forum there for "Health News Headlines" http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum66.html it seems every day there are more reports of a "genetic link" to almost everything....today even a predisposition to cigarette addiction as well as to susceptibility for lung cancer......... I have been chatting with Kim re her Genetics thread, and have confessed to her that I simply dont understand all the technical talk in the articles and quotes, but i just really believe that genetics play a vital role in most everything we discuss here..whether how a kid will react to the vaccines, or the food allergies they manifest, their susceptibility to PANDAS from strep infection, the manifestation of TS, etc etc etc I know that environmental factors play a HUGE role in it all, but at the root....it really does seem to me that it is in the genetic makeup that the answers (and eventual most effective treatments) will be found anyway...."genetics" really is at the forefront of so much news on so many illnesses and now even "habits" ....... that I just wanted to say a BIG thanks to Kim for wading thru all that stuff that many of us dont even begin to understand and making it available here. Who knows which researchers may read here and may find clues toward cures!!
  20. MaryAnn probiotics will only restore "good" bacteria in the gut they dont actually "kill" the candida, only help reduce it's negative effects

  22. as so many things that affect kids with autism also do seem to have relevance here, I thought this may be of interest my own son was *not* a preemie and was in fact induced as he was past due! 23. i added it to our 101 threads but also wanted to mention here that we have some useful websites listed in the OCD forum at ACN/Latitudes, that include info on CBT Cognitive Behavioral Therapy It REALLY helped my son very much. Find a caring psychologist trained well to help with it, and it can really help with OCD coping skills http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1963

  25. hi Wendy melatonin is normally produced in humans by the pineal gland. it needs darkness to work properly under normal secretion by our pineals, but because of our modern world of lights everywhere (even those green LEDs that glow) we dont make enough of it most of the time anymore. so the supplemental form is often excellent to help with sleep issues..... plus, as it is "related" to serotonin in the biosynthetic pathway from tryptophan, and 5HTP, which is likely where something is helping your daughter's OCD from it. an important thing on doseage with melatonin is that for some people very tiny amounts produce the best effect, while more has an "edge" that actually causes restlessness and then grogginess. I cant take more than 300 MICROgrams, maximum 600 if really needed, and my son the same, while my husband needs a much higher dose at 1-3 MILIgrams some people also use melatonin for jet lag
