peglem Posted August 6, 2010 Report Posted August 6, 2010 Oh, no! They always tape Allie's down really really really solid! The last 3 times, though, they've had to bring in ultrasound to get a vein in the upper arm because she has fought the lower ones so hard. She's scheduled for surgery 8/16 to place a subclavicle port under the skin, so no more arm pokes. Hope you can get this worked out and finish the drip!

melanie Posted August 6, 2010 Author Report Posted August 6, 2010 He wasnt wiggling he was fine the 1st 5x
momaine Posted August 6, 2010 Report Posted August 6, 2010 He wasnt wiggling he was fine the 1st 5x Honestly, after the first two pokes, I'd have asked for someone more experienced. For anyone else reading this, make sure your child is well hydrated going into the procedure so their viens are easier to find. Angela

nevergiveup Posted August 7, 2010 Report Posted August 7, 2010 Melanie, My dd had to be stuck 6 times once, never used that nurse again. Not becuz I requested but becuz she (the nurse) was so scared and embarrassed she wouldn't come back. My dd was obviously beside herself. Try the lidocaine cream before the ivig it helps. Good luck tommorrow. Make him drink lots of liquids tonight.

After applying heat they were then able to get the needle in. But, it took some extra time.
PhillyPA Posted August 7, 2010 Report Posted August 7, 2010 I had the nurse put it in my son's hand instead of the arm. The back of the hands are so veiny. It stays in well. He can move around better. Just make sure it is wrapped up well once it is in place. My husband is an anesthesiologist and he actually is the one who recommended it. Works great!

Melanie Awww Man. So sorry to hear this. My son popped 5 veins today before the nurse was able to get the IV to flush. After the 6th try it finally cooperated. It was the same nurse we had last time so I don't think it was her fault. It went right in last time. He didn't drink as much as water as he did last month so I am thinking this may be the reason the veins popped. He is pretty bruised up. It breaks my heart that our children have to go through this.
