Lynn777
So, we had a family vacation planned for almost a year. When my son started with his tics I really wanted to cancel, but DH wouldn't hear of it. So, I agreed to go. The past few weeks DS has been doing so well with the diet changes and supplements, not sure if it's that or just waning, but the tics have been very minimal and I actually started to get excited about vacation. So, we left today and DS did great on the 6 hour car ride. Then we get here and he is ticcing like crazy, it's like every tic he's ever had started pouring out all at once and I just want to cry my eyes out. My husband and older son are being so great about it, but I'm a wreck. I don't want to sound like a complaining jerk, but it's just so unfair. Why now? Was a week of mild tics on vacation REALLY too much to ask? I really thought I was coming to terms with this, but I guess I'm not as adjusted as I thought. Thank you for listening. I really do find solace in knowing there are other people in this world that can sympathize with me and my situation. ~Lynn
deby
Take it easy Lynn, I'm sure that he is really tired. I'm sure that tomorrow he will be much better, and you'll be able to enjoy your vacation. And if he tics a little tomorrow , don't worry, enjoy your time with the family, relax, he'll feel that you're happy and he will more relaxed too. When you come back home then continue your research. Enjoy your vacation!
patty
Lynn, I am sorry that happened on vacation. I totally understand. That is one of the main reasons why i don't take far away or a week long vacation fearing it may aggravate my son's symptoms. I know it is hard to relax and enjoy your family vacation, but you have to try for your son so he does not feel the tics get in his way. I am wondering if the waxing may be allergy induced since you are far away from home? If he has allergy, try OTC allergy medication like Claritin, Zyrtec or Benedrayl. If you are by a healthfood store, try qucertin it stabilizes the mast cell and blocks histamine production. However, it may take a few days to kick in. Chemar
(((Lynn))) Do remember that excitement is a major tic trigger as is exhaustion add to that a new place with likely a lot of chemical in the carpet cleaner, pesticides etc, and possibly florescent lighting etc as well as the exhaustion of a long journey.....all these are tic triggers too did you eat any fast food on the way? I know you feel frustrated but also try to remember what it must be like for your little one....these tics just happen! He cant control them. If he feels the tics are upsetting you, he becomes more focused on them and the cycle gets worse. remember too that altho you notice the tics, they are not life threatening....think of the parents with terminally ill kids and it will help you refocus! I had to do that many times when my son was newly diagnosed and it really did help me get things in perspective. do try to ignore any ticcing as much as possible, hard as i know it is, and enjoy your vacation! ilovedogs
Hugs to you, Lynn! We've been there, done that. Ds always tics more when we travel, probably just the excitement. But, I also noticed that old hotel rooms and new allergens can trigger an exacerbation, too. Just remember that it all will pass and he will wane soon. Please do try to enjoy your vacation. Praying he wanes soon for you! Bonnie
Lynn777
Thank you all so much. Yesterday (my birthday) he was still a little high, but today has been better. I think the combination of 6 hours in the car, the excitement, the fast food I allowed him to have and his allergies acting up all played a part in the exacerbation. He is still ticking, but not nearly as bad as before. I'm trying to keep him on the clean food and am giving him the Benadryl & Ibuprofen for his allergies. So, I am calmer! I appreciate all of your posts, please know they really helped me through a very tuff situation. I needed some support & perspective and you guys were right there for me. Also, what is qucertin? Is it like a natural form of Benadryl? -Lynn
patty
Lynn, Quercetin is a bioflavnonoid. It is a supplement that you take to stabilize the mast cells to prevent histmaine production. It takes a few days to kick in and no side effect like the OTC allergy medication. It works well for my daughter at about 500mg a day. However, for my son at 1500-2000 mg a day, he is still having allergy symptoms, so we are using the neti pot and Zyrtec daily. I am going to start to wane him off Zyrtec in a few days and see what happens. I am also going to try Nettle for his allergies. Pat
Familyof5
Hi Lynn, I am new to this site and to these forums, but I wanted to ask you if you thought it could be related to the indoor air quality of the hotel and/or cottage you stayed at? Especially since the reaction seemed to be so immediate. I have found that certain indoor environments (specifically moldy ones) cause my tics and my children's tics (along with all other illness related symptoms) to increase and/or decrease. I have three children, all of whom have vocal and motor tics. I have found that if I take two children to the "play land" located in the basement (poor air quality) of a local restaurant then those two children have symptom setbacks, where my third child who was not with us, does not have the setback. If one child has a sleepover at a friend's house (where they slept in basement), that child will be the only one with a setback. Something else I have noticed is that the air quality can be worse "initially" upon arriving to indoor environments that may have been closed up for sometime and allowed for the buildup of toxic air. For instance, returning to school in the fall or after vacations is a time when my children's symptoms increase. The building has been closed up all summer (hot and humid air where mold growth flourishes)and all the children return and it takes a while to flush out the bad air. Curious if you or anyone else has ever considered this correlation? Familyof5
