juls Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Hi Folks, I took my 9 yr old son to the doctor today and clearly their are signs of puberty. He has hit a huge growth spurt (97% now) and towers over his classmates at school. He also is growing pubic hair and has had body odor (this has been going on for a while). His older brother (age 11) has none of these things. He has also lost more teeth than his older brother. I am very concerned that he is hitting puberty so early. He is immature for his age. The doctor told me he may also end up being short and unfortunately this kid is already obese and has a huge body frame- he needs all the height he can get! We have been pretty successful at controlling his TS with supplements but now I'm wondering if its something that I am giving him that is causing high testosterone. Here's what we use: SAM-e 200 mg L Tryptophan- 500 mg Mag Taurinate- 166 mg L Taurine- 850 mg Acetyl L Carnitine 500 mg Gaba- 200 mg Zinc- 50 mg Vit C- 1000 mg Fish oil- 1000 mg of omegas Theanine- 200 mg IP 6- 1000 mg Inositol- 2000 mg Melatonin- 2 mg I have been googling for a bit and see that precocious puberty does seem to happen more frequently with autistic kids and he is mildly on the spectrum. Why do these kids have to have all the troubles???? Thanks for any insights, Juls
Dedee Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Juls, I wish I had answers for you. I just wanted to add that my PANDAS son also entered puberty early. I never made any correlation until your post. He is now 12 yrs old and is 5' 9" tall and 165 pounds. He wears a size 13 mans shoe. He was around 10 when I started noticing significant changes and really had to start making him wear deodorant. Now I have to buy the "clinical strength" deodorant for him because he has a man's body but still runs and plays (thus sweats alot), like a boy. The last year he has developed bad acne which I am treating with topical medication pretty successfully. It is just very odd to see this boy in a man's body. He seem's immune to any of it and just goes on his merry way, even though he is so obviously bigger than the other boys in his class. Since there doesn't seem to be anything to do about it, I try to compliment him as much as I can and get him to help me with things around the house that require more strength. This seems to boost his self-esteem. I'm sorry I could'nt be more help, but I do think it is interesting that some of these children have this in common. Good luck. Dedee
P_Mom Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 Last year, son was still 7, we took him to the doc to check for early puberty because of obvious body odor on occasion. He was checked and we were told he was not entering puberty, no answers for the body odor. However, our doc did say it is normal for kids these days to start to enter puberty around 9, some countries, it is now 8. I am not sure why the age is getting lower, but, I am sure it has a lot to do with environmental, genetic, etc. factors. My husband has a "theory" it is partly due to the hormones injected in our foods these days, particularly chicken. Just his theory. Anyway, my son is almost 9 now, no change in anything, still gets body odor from time to time...he started using deodorant at 7 years old!!!! So, I am not sure sure that 9 is considered to be very young for puberty these days...I wouldn't say it is the norm, just that it may be nothing to worry about. Kelly
EAMom Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 This article (which is written about girls but I suppose might also apply to boys?) talks about being overweight and environmental toxins as possible causes: http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2001-0...rly-puberty.htm
peglem Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 I don't know if any of those supplements can cause precocious puberty, but you may want to take him to an endocrinologist, have his thyroid and growth hormones checked. My severely autistic (and PANDAS) daughter has the opposite problem- Thank God, she's fourteen and just barely beginning to get pubic hair and breast buds. My oldest daughter went through precocious puberty, but she's NT.
kim Posted September 10, 2008 Report Posted September 10, 2008 NT= without looking up a definition I guess I would say "no noticable signs of neurological problems" or "neurologically normal/typical" Juls, There have been a lot of articles shared on different forums about Bisphenol A. You may want to search it+Precocious Puberty and see if you can find a specific correlation. I wonder if it's another example of a subset of people, just not handling toxins as well as others? Here's one article http://foodconsumer.org/7777/8888/C_ooking...ne_system.shtml Sunday Sept. 7, 2008 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new review suggests that adult exposure to bisphenol A, a common plastic ingredient may affect the brain, reproductive system and immune system in men and probably also in women.
juls Posted September 10, 2008 Author Report Posted September 10, 2008 Well I am trying to get him in with a pediatric endocrinologist. Interesting about the BPA in plastics, I was just reading about that in a different context. It seems that precocious puberty is much more common in girls. Thanks for the replies- I'll take more if anyone has ideas. Juls
peglem Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 NT= without looking up a definition I guess I would say "no noticable signs of neurological problems" or "neurologically normal/typical" Yes, that's it.
jen Posted September 11, 2008 Report Posted September 11, 2008 Hello, Juls, I am very new here but have been reading this forum for a while. I have a 10yo daughter who has verbal and motor tics, tourettes, ocd, adhd and trichotillomania. We started seeing a DAN doctor in May. He did several tests and found she has a high testosterone level. He is prescribing licerice root to help bring it down. He said a lot of autistic children are showing high testosterone levels, but no one is sure why. I found the link below and forwarded it to him. He said he was aware of the Geiers work and that's what got him interested in that aspect. My daughter did test high for mercury. Of course, there are so many variables--I can't say I've seen any improvements yet, maybe slight, but I'm not sure. I wish you best of luck! http://www.ageofautism.com/2008/04/mercury-testost.html Jen
Chemar Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Hi Jen I just wanted to mention that I hope your doctor is monitoring your child's blood pressure as liquorice root elevates bp my son takes the DGL liquorice extract for his Crohn's disease and that is the only form that does not raise bp and it also heals ulceration etc that is interesting tho re the testosterone levels as it is known that testosterone (and steroids) elvate tics, one of the reasons it would seem that boys seem to exhibit tics/TS more than girls perhaps that is why my son'stics have been so low too? ************ Juls re the general question on puberty, my son started showing signs around 10yo before he had taken the supps or meds altho he had been on homeopathic remedies for about a year prior kids are definitely entering puberty earlier per se, so I am not sure what the causes are but I wouldnt doubt that the highly chemical environment and food contributes
momto2pandas Posted September 12, 2008 Report Posted September 12, 2008 Your son doesn't have Prader-Willi syndrome, does he? That can be associated with precocious puberty in boys (usually the opposite, but sometimes in this direction) and also with some of the other things you've mentioned. Very, very long shot but just a thought. Hi Folks, I took my 9 yr old son to the doctor today and clearly their are signs of puberty. He has hit a huge growth spurt (97% now) and towers over his classmates at school. He also is growing pubic hair and has had body odor (this has been going on for a while). Why do these kids have to have all the troubles???? Thanks for any insights, Juls
