Hi everyone,

I did have this posted on another thread, but did not receive an answer there, so I am putting it here in its own thread. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Daughter's throat clearing has started up again in the past week, though not as intense as it was the last time around. We'll have a period in the day that is maybe 4 times a minute for a while, but then is milder for much of the day (as compared with around 20 times a minute last time around). I do believe our program of supps and restrictions on artificials keeps her milder. But the throat thing had me worried, so I went through the piles of notes I've made while searching for answers, and the next supplement that jumped out at me as making a lot of sense for my daughter in particular (based on symptoms, diet--she will barely touch meat, etc) was Taurine. So I got some, gave it a try, and noticed IMMEDIATE (overnight) improvement with one dose. She went from multiple throat clearing to NONE throughout most of the next day, until evening hit. (Is this because the effects of taurine wear off before 24 hours have passed? Is this a good reason to take a divided dose?)

I am wondering about dose, too. Is 500mg too much for an almost-six-year-old?

Thanks,

Calicat

Calicat,

500 mg. is okay, that is how it usually comes. If you wanted, I guess you could give half am and half pm. But 500 was okayed by our naturo when I asked. I am not giving it right now. I was last year and somehow it got out of my mix, but I have experimented with it again a few months back but didn't really feel anything one way or another, so right now I'm not giving it. Since you mentioned you saw immediate overnight improvement, has that lasted? I mean is that how it is everyday now when she takes it? Or have you seen fluctuation? When you say it lasted till evening, I am inclined to believe that the stresses of the day coupled with tiredness and quiet time is why some tics seem to show in the evening, and I am not one to really feel that any supplement is like a cure, but just something the body may need to manage these symptoms and keep them at bay.

hi Calicat

yes, taurine had a very positive effect on my son very quickly too when we first started to use it

you very well may get a better impact spreading it into 2 1/2 doses so always worth a try.

Do you give it with the magnesium? we were told to and I know Bonnie actually has magnesium taurate as a single supplement becasue the two work so well together. Cardiovascular Research brand of magnesium taurate is also available from The Vitamin Shoppe stores or online

I agree we saw almost immediate improvement of finger cracking tics with taurate. Our DAN said to give him half a dose which is 250 mg. based on his 38 lb weight. One day I accidently gave the whole pill 500mg. He was almost tic free all day. However around bedtime he had diarreah which can be a side effect. I also notice it wearing off between supplements with 250 mg. Thus far it has been the best tic reducer for us.

I have not added magnesium with it yet. Has anyone added amino acids or nystatin for tics? What about GLA? Isn't it interesting the DAN is the only Dr. suggesting meds or supplements? My husband informed me today his dad and brothers had repetitive movements when they were young and one had finger cracking! My son is the only grandson. This could be the predisposition for the PANDAS. Ours did come out initially with strep.

However now it seems to be staying with the tics not going away. So I don't know if that is PANDAS induced tic disorder or what you call it. Have others with PANDAS had times when the tics didn't go away?
