Another new mom with questions

Recommended Posts

Hi- Like many others I have been reading posts here on and off for the past few months and I have a few questions. First off- my son is almost 9 and has had vocal tics for at least 4 years. He mostly clears his throat. It doesn't really bother him all that much- just all of the adults around him! At this point the other kids haven't been mean about it.

So- my pediatrician doesn't know anything about tics/tourette's. I asked for allergy tests and he said no. I decided to try elimination diets instead because someone told me the allergy testing won't show positive if he doesn't have more severe symptoms like rashes and GI problems. So first question- Is this true? He has been off dairy for 10 days with no noticeable results. That is the only one we have done so far.

Next- can you have PANDAS if you had a strep infection that was never diagnosed or treated? As I was reading I realized my second son and I both had strep 2 months before Owen's 5th birthday. If it is possible, can he be tested 4 years later?

Last- He has been taking Bonnie's TS-Plus and MagTaurate for about 3 months with very litttle if any change. I have the fish oil from her as well, but haven't even attempted to get it in him! Is it worth continuing this expensive, unpleasant regimen if he hasn't seen results yet? Would adding the fish oil make that much difference? Should I just leave him alone since it only bothers adults???????

Any answers or advice would be greatly appreciated :D

hi Owen'sMom and welcome to Latitudes

I will try to answer your questions and hope others will also give their input

firstly, working with a doctor who doesnt know anything about tics/tourettes will be a very frustrating experience! It may be wise to start a search for a different doc

and yes, undiagnosed/treated strep most certainly can point to PANDAS. Only blood tests showing strep antibodies can indicate whether this is the case

although we dont deal with food allergies with my son, yet I know a little bit and one can have food allergy without necessarily having GI/rash issues, although GI issues are common when allergic to a food

re Bonnie's supplements:

some people do wonderfully on them and others not so if after 3 months you are not seeing and improvement then either they are not the right blend for your son's needs OR some underlying issues are preventing them from working properly (eg Candida infection, heavy metal toxicity, PANDAS, pyroluria etc etc

also a word on fish oil: it is by far the best source of Omega3 fatty acids which are proven to be essential not only for general health but specifically for neurological conditions

however

some people with TS do not tolerate fishoil well (even tho they can eat fish without problems)

if sensitivity to fishoil is noticed, then flaxseed oil is the next best choice

Lastly, if your son's tic is not bothering him, the least attention to it is best! That doesnt mean it isnt a good idea to optimize his diet and health...rather just to do it in ways that dont cause him even more stress than the tic does!

I hope that has helped some

do keep asking any questions you have and we will try to help as possible

:)

When you removed milk what did you replace it with? If is was SOY - something like 30% of those allergic to casein/milk are also allergic to soy. My son had a throat clearing tic from ages 3-6 then the PANDAS onset of severe and sudden tics - on antibiotics all tics went away except the throat clearing one - which we were then happy to live with - amazingly after removing dairy from his diet this tic went away - so now I think it was more an allergy than a tic for all of those years.

Good morning Owen's Mom & welcome to this wonderful forum.

Bonnie's supplements: Our son, who is 5, started having tics this past December. We started him on the vitamin regime immediately & within 2 weeks had him on the full doseage of 11 vitamins & 4 fish oils w/MagTaurette. My husband takes them as well & as a result, the boys eagerly do what Dad does, so taking the vitamins has been more of a game & a passage to manhood than a bothersome task. Helps!!

Food: On Bonnie's site, she decribed certain foods, preservatives & food dies that are tic triggers. Over the past 4 months we have elimainated them ALL & have been giving our son a probiotic enzyme & organic yogurt to help w/abosorption.

Results: His eye, mouth, hand, nose & arm tics are down 93%. His behavior was & is so much better too. He was shy socially, irratible, & moody. Now, aside from fighting colds & allergies, he is more attentive & willingly to participate in group activities. We have had a cycle of every 3 weeks a bronchial infection sweeping through our 2 sons. As a result of this, we have not been able to observe them completely healthy, but, the tics are down considerably & we are hopeful that this is a clear sign of us being on the right track. These bronchial/sinus promblems started in December too.

Doctor: We have found an Enviromental M.D. - Dr. Conrad Maulfair who has run several tests on our son. 90 food panel for allergies, blood count & tests for toxic metals & minerals count, hair analysis for mineral count, stool analysis for G.I. health & yeast activitiy.

What we have found to be ailing our son so far is an absorbtion problem in his G.I. tract & this has weakened his immune system. This has compromised his overall health. We have posted our test results so far & you are welcome to check them out.

Hang in there. It is tough & maddening at times with such little understanding in the medical community & within the schools/family. Diet is HUGE in this battle & getting your child's immune healthy is a large contributor in your child's overall health.

With kind regards, Pam

Hi Owen's mom,

Welcome, I wanted to tell you I started my son on Bonnie's supps, before we had allergy testing. he told me one day his stomach iched. I stopped the supps and had him tested, and he does have an allergy to soy. It was high and we never saw any rashes nor did he complain after eating products with soy.

I told my Dr. that he needed to be tested because his peanut allergy is severe, and I needed to know about other foods. I never said it was for TS. My son does come up allergic to other beans.

We took milk away for three weeks... no change, he still ticced like crazy. Introduced it back... no change, still ticced like crazy.

I have wondered about the PANDAS with my son. His titers are very very low. So if anything have the test done and rule it out.

Glad your here,

C.P.

Thanks to those of you who took time out to reply- I appreciate any new info. I can get :) I did not eliminate soy during the dairy elimination so I guess that could be a problem. I think at this point less is more in terms of intervention- I don't want to cause more stress than the tics themselves are (thank you Chemar for that advice).

My immediate plan is:

1.To go back to our regular healthy diet with no restrictions

2. I have made an appt. at a center for preventive medicine- will ask about testing for PANDAS and allergies.

3. Finish Bonnie's vitamins that we have and then discontinue until we have some test results

4. Let my son enjoy his life without adding more stress through diets, vitamins... until I have more info.

5. Keep informed here in this forum.

Thanks for past and future replies/help :P

Hi Pam, I am new here and this is my first post. I noticed you mentioned taking your son to Dr. Maulfair in Topton, PA. I found him on the enviromental Medicine listing and he was the closest one to our home. I was planning on was calling him in the morning for help with my son's tics that started in October after we moved into a new home. Are you still using him? Was he a help with your son? Our insurance will not cover much of this visit with him so this can be expensive for us though I am in need of answers. If you dont mind can you please share your experience at his practice? Thanks so much in advance.

Blessings to you and your son's health!

Sincerely,

Lori

Hi Itsmes,

So glad things are still going quite well.

Could I ask a few questions, please?

I am interested in what you believe attributed to your son's attention and irritability getting better as you mention, if that is the case. I'm starting to wonder if my son is having a focus/attention issue and he is very irritable in the morning, but just at me, so don't know if its just manipulation of mom.

Itsme, you are taking the Bontech vits too? Do you see any improvement/calming effect on your ticcing?

What kind of enzymes do you use (and why) and how do you think it helps?

Also, not trying to be cute, but how did you determine the 93% better? Did he ever have any vocal?

Thanks

Faith

Hi Faith. Here we go!

1st. When Wes eats a food that disagrees with him, such as: eggs, milk, wheat, pinto beans, lima beans, he becomes irritable & he takes his frustration out on me as well.

2nd. When we pull back on vitatmins, he becomes irritable & somewhat foggy mentally. Again, when his body is not getting what he needs, the first thing that changes with him is his personality. We no longer deal with rage & I believe that illiminating ALL of the foods that he is sensitive food took care of that problem. That one was terrible.

3rd. Airborn allergies affect him. We are currently taking Heel Homeopathy sinus & allergy pills every three hours. These have helped tremendously.

Attention Problems: When we were, about 3 months ago, trying to figure everything out, Wes was having a terrible time focusing in school. He wasn't present & what I mean by that is that he would not respond to his teacher the 2nd or 3rd time she would address him. He had a terrible time following directions. As we had him tested & began the rotation diet & then the candida diet, his focus level & attention level blossomed. Also, before we started the diet & elimination program, Bontech vitamins helped out in this area as well; however, when the allergy season hit or he had a cold, the vitamins were unable to keep him balanced.

All in all, figuring out his body's needs & then meeting them has enabled his remarkable come-back. He is comfortable in social situations, he handles conflict so much better & he will sit & occupy himself at his desk.

Re. the 93% - it is so obvious! His facial tics are the primary ones we are dealing with & they seem to be associated with his nose running a little bit due to allergies.

Bontech - he takes 11 vitamins & 3 fish oil. The oil helps him relax relieving us of hyperness. We haven't seen a clear result with the enzymes & I am not sure exactly what we have given him - my husband is in charge of that area.

I hope this was helpful! Take care Faith - Pam
