petb Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 HI All, My son seems to be getting sick. He has a fever. What do you give your kids? My daughter has been sick, and white willow bark didn't seem to help her 102 temp. So I had to give her Motrin. I did found it without dyes. But it still had other stuff that wasn't good in it. Not sure if I should give this to my son. What is your opion? I do use Sambucal and give them vit c too. Thanks so much PetB
Chemar Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 hi petb sorry the kids are ill mrsD (who is a pharmacist) once warned not to use motrin in kids here is a link to what she said on NeuroTalk http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/showpost...amp;postcount=3
faith Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Hi petb, Doctors usually say fever of 103 or higher is something to be concerned about. Fever is just the body's way of fighting off infection of some kinds and usually comes down on its own (starve a cold, FEED a fever). Personally, I probably wouldn't use motrin or such just because of the tics issue. I would just use cool washcloth and wait till end of day. Also one thing I read way back when is that calories bring fever down, so having something high in calories like ice cream is good, although we probably wouldn't want to give a hot fudge sundae! Also, I did want to ask you-- (and others)... When you give supplements, did you give your child things you believe he needs from your own research, or is it under recommendations of the doctor or naturo or your NMT therapist? I mean, do you just give things at your own discretion or only from the doctor treating him? I ask because, we are currently seeing a naturopath since January and she seems to do things in steps. I want to give more vits, but right now he is on minerals (to make sure he has enough and is not depleted while we do chelation of metals, which we are just starting with a product called Metal-Free. It is a gentle, natural detoxifier. (if anyone has any experience with this product, please let me know). He also gets a probiotic and extra magnesium (which I added on my own, but she said it was okay). She also wanted fish oil and a b complex (the one I previously mentioned that is similar to that cataprex g), but I stopped the fish oil cause I imagined more ticcing. He also does methylb12 shots/folinic acid. I feel like I want to try other things that others are using, i.e. L-carnitine, 5htp, and maybe inositol (which she is recommending, but wants to wait on that right now.). I suppose I should just stay on the path, but was curious what others do and how you figured out what your child needs and what helps. Just a side note to all--so far we havn't made any appts. with the school yet--the teacher is going to let me know when we can sit down together. This week is the terranove testing for second graders, so its a big week for the kids and teachers. Oh how I am praying he is able to keep his squeaks to a minimum during this quiet time. The teacher did say, "the kids seem to be used to him, they don't seem to notice". He's such a "silly-billy" that it just seems part of his personality. So this week, I will try to put some things together (along with my head) and be ready to go in there and KICK #@% !! Thanks Faith
patty Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 I was once adviced by a pediatrian friend not to give Tylenol to kids. However, i can't remember the reason. I am wondering for kids with tics/TS, is it ok to give Tylenol, but not Motrin? Thx for the response! Patty
patty Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 petb, Sorry to hear that you kids for having fever. Have you tried wiping them down with a wet towel (cold) from head to toe? While you do it, make sure that other parts of the body that you are not wiping down is covered by a thin sheet, so the body does not get a chill. Also, plenty of liquid, particularly water is good too to bring down the fever. Patty

I took my high-fevered daughter to the dr and she has strep. My son (who has TS) was with us bc he had a slight temp this morning. He looked at him and his face and said he has Impetigo. So that explaines his never ending lip liccing and picking his mouth. At least I have an answer. So they both have to go on Amoxilian. I am so nervous about giving him the antibiotic. This ped does not agree with our alternative plan and it killed me to go but I was desperate for my daughter. And he did help with my son now. I WILL not give motrin anymore. 1 dose-uggh. Do you use white willow bark? I was told to use that but not sure on how much for a child so I was just opening it and giving her half. It's when they get sick. I don't know what to do and tend to fall back on my old treatments..like tylenol, motrin etc... My son is also supose to put bactroban on his face too. The supplements we are on are mostly from my recommendations. The first dr we saw that did the IGG test came up with her plan on what he needed (also from my recommendations). Thanks to this forum and my own research. The NMT dr changed this around because of the way he tested for them. I know I am missing something and I am always tring to figure out what it is. It does drive me crazy that she doesn't know. I have learned to trust myself. I used to get really fustrated (and I still do) on not being able to count on a doctor, but with all these drs they just don't know the all answers. Every kid is different. I really think Inositol would help, but she said no, his body doens't need it. So I am listening to her. I feel the best I can do for him is build up his body by feeding him healthy. Have to tend to my sick kids PetB
patty Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 petb, Forgot to mention about homepathic medicine. It is safe and has no side effect. The next time your kids are sick, you may want to try it. You can get homepathic remedy for fever at your local health food store or Whole Foods. It is generally in the form of sugar pill that is a size of the tiniest candy you can think of and it is sweet. I have used it on occassion with myself and kids, and it is effective and safe. Patty

Patty Thanks for that advice. My son does take some homeo from the dr. I always look at the homeopathic med in the health food store and I don't know anything about it. But I think I will do my research and try that next time something comes up. Thanks, PetB
patty Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Faith, I am actually glad to hear that your dr. is taking her time to take one thing at a time because it will give you an indication how your son's reacting to the supplement or treatment, so you can slowly build it up that suits your son. In my past experience, and this is different for everyone, as for my son, he is very sensitive and seems to react to everything. When we saw an ND last summer, she wanted him on numerous things pretty much all at the same time. We were both overwhelmed with the supplements and the supplements also it caused increased symptoms along with new symptoms. It was very stressful. In retrospect, i feel she detoxed him too quickly. So i had to asked her to ease back and start slow, and it was still causing problems. I didn't feel comfortable or confident in her treatment plan and decided to stop. And i am glad that i did, we are doing different things and he is doing alot better. There is never a single protocol for everyone. Unfortunately, my son's ND has only one protocol and did not make any changes to accommodate him. I always feel that mother's instinct is my best guidance, of course, along with alot of praying for widom from God. Patty
kim Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 PetB, I can't believe that I didn't think to mention impetigo to you. The last time we dealt with that, I did a bunch of reading. I used alcohol, zinc oxide, and borage oil. I'm scared to death of staph, but like you, I was afraid of an antibiotic too. This was my older son, and it was a small patch at the bottom corner of one lip, maybe the size of a nickle. If it would have been as bad as what is sounds like your sons might be, I may have not tried what I did. It did clear up very quickly. I'm not recommending that anyone do what I did, just sharing our experience. BTW, my 10 yr. old has strep too. I took him to a Med Express on Sunday. He was sooo sick, he couldn't stand up to get dressed. We tried to ride out the fever. Then, I started giving him 1/2 of a Mortin at a time. We didn't get much sleep Sat. night. I have come to the conclusion, that i will use the absolute minimal amt. of motrin when totally unavoidable. I have decided to balance the need for sleep and pain relief (for him, not me) with the possible adverse effects of motrin or tylenol. I guess I still like Motrin a bit better than tylenol, because of the press it got recently about an effective dose, being very close to a dose that can damage the liver. Also, I have read MANY times, that it depletes glutathione. I sure would like to hear of a safe effective fever reducer too. I hope anyone with idea's keep them coming!
