  1. Patty, Your welcome. That feature can be really helpful. My oldest son had so many allergies with conventional allergy testing, that we have never gone off of Zyrtec. He was prescribed 3 allergy medications, we chose only to use the Zyrtec. It was not apparent to me, that he was loaded with seasonal/environmental allergies. He started to itch intensly at night. His mood was awful. I think his histimine levels were through the roof. His Pediatrician said "just winter dry skin." I was SOOO frustrated. I told him I though we needed an appt. with an allergist (thanks to the info. from this forum). I could have cried when I saw his reaction to the test injections. We are also using Solaray Non citrus Quercetin (bioflavonoids) and Vit. C for allergies, along with Bontech vits and other supplements.
  2. Patty, I would bet the sock issue is sensory. It seems to be pretty common. Some Mom's are elated on a day that their child keeps socks on! In their case, it's the socks themselves causing the sensory problem.
  3. Patty, Our Chiropractor does adjustments at the neck and back. He said that he has treated a few kids with tics, both vocal and motor. He told me about twin brothers with TS. He said that adjustments helped one brother more than the other. This Dr. sold me when he said that none of his 3 kids had been vaccinated. I asked what his Pediatrician thought of that. He said they have never had the need for a Pediatrician. I knew when I saw the natural healing magazines, the brochures regarding caution when considering vaxing, the pure water cooler, that we were probably at the right place. Our area does not provide a lot (almost none) of choices for alternative practitioners. It seems that my boys get tics in areas of their bodies that have some sort of irritation. When the weather gets dry and cold, we have to keep tons of lip stuff handy. If it gets dry around the mouth, licking, swipping with shirt sleeve, and mouth stretching are likely to appear. I recently posted about my oldest son developing an abdominal tic, when he was having a very acidy stomach from vit C. I think the head shaking starts from illness or irritation (too much wheat/or maybe just plain old stress), and gets into a vicious cycle, where the tic itself starts causing muscle fatigue and misalignment and keeps the head shaking flairing. The adjustments seem to break the cycle, along with extra cal/mag, and whatever else I think may help. If it's illness related, I might increase zinc and vit C for example. Sodium ascorbate not ascorbic acid, anymore, for oldest. My younger son seems to tolerate ascorbic acid ok though.

  5. Patty, During a recent head shaking episode for my oldest son, he was head shaking every 15 seconds on the way to the chiropractor. It's about 1/2 hour drive. On the way home, I don't think he shook his head more than 3 times total. I don't think it was a coincidence either.
  6. Patty, Wish I could help, but back when my son was using Claritin, I didn't know enough to watch for triggers, so I can't comment. You can type claritin in the search box, and see if it has been discussed here before. You may also want to try Xylitol nasal spray. May be soothing, and help ward off any infection that may start. Zyrtec has not increased tics for my son at all. In fact, it has helped quite a bit. If the inflammation and itching are caused from allergies, you may want to read through this thread about sodium ascorbate. I didn't know that vit C had an antihistime effect. http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=353318 Kim
  7. Petb, I'm sorry that I didn't respond sooner Things at work got unexpectedly hectic, and I haven't had a lot of extra time. Also, my oldest son called from school Mon. He asked me to come and get him because he thought he was having an allergic reaction to something. When I picked him up, his face looked red and bumpy on one side, swollen, and reddish/purple blotches here and there. To make a long story short, I caught on by Wed. morning that it wasn't an allergy, and took him to the Dr. who said she thought it was Poison Ivy. She wanted to give him steroids. She must have seen the "no way" look on my face, and asked what my objection was. I told her, they made tics flair. Her answer was to give him a potent "burst" on Fri, Sat, and Sun. so by Mon. and back to school, the tics would be gone. Yea, right! I told her , if anything, I would prefer a very mild longer term dose, which she agreed to. We have managed just fine, with suspending zyrtec, and using benedryl for a few days (we were told we could use both). If his eyes would have swollen shut, or he was having a hard time breathing, I may have had to reconsider, but it just didn't look like it warranted a "burst of steroids" to me! He's doing fine, although not crazy about the spots on his face. He kind of looks like he's been in a heck of a fight, from a distance. Anyway, I'm hoping you can point me to the thread where I asked you the questions. I'm thinking if I was questioning vit. A that you may have mentioned using Cod liver Oil? Sometimes, according to other posts that I have read, some kids who take a multi with CLO can be getting too much vit. A. Bontech vits. also contain 5000 IU of vit A as beta carotene at full dose. I have heard of Super Nu-Thera mostly from the Autism bds. Don't know what's in them though. Again, it's kind of hit and miss with the multi combo's for most kids. What works for one, may have no effect, or a negative effect for another, depending on individual needs. I do think that I would consider the Bontech Vits. if you're going to go that route, since Bonnie formulated them specifically with our kids problems in mind. Your statement about protein, did your son actually crave foods high in protein at one time? Or did he just start rejecting protein at some point? If you have eliminated milk, are you using a substitute? Sometimes people will sub. soy for milk, and it seems many people have a sensitivity to both. I wanted to tell you that my oldest son has had the drooling problem on and off too. I've never seen it with my youngest son. I wonder if it could have anything to do with teeth moving? I hope your appt. with the nutritionist was helpful in some respect. Are you seeing any improvements with the supplements that you have started so far?
  8. Carolyn, No way, are diet restrictions easy for the majority of us Carolyn. I think it can become a mind set, and a way of life, but there are many factors involved in reaching that point. You could have mentioned to that poster, that you have been a little too busy with trying to get your MB12 injections right, balancing your vitamins and minerals, getting to the bottom of heavy metal status and chelation, having massage, acupuncture, advocating in Washington, getting through teacher's exams, finding a new DAN Dr. etc, just hasn't left you quite enough time to really focus on carbs and suger yet. You might add, that there's some pretty good evidence that improvements in some of the area's that you've been working on, may help to get Candida issues under control more easily. Your dedication to improving your health and managing TS have been totally amazing Carolyn. Give yourself a lot of credit. Kim
  9. These are the first thing I see when I open the ole laptop. Matt. 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Isaiah 40:31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Matt. 7:7-11 7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him
  10. Giselle, I started to reply to this post last night, and as usual, got so far into tracking down sites, that have helped me understand this one amazing (and somewhat complicated) supplement, that I exhausted myself reading, and gave up my reply! I did save the links as I was trying to save you some time though, and I'm just going to post them, in hopes they will get you to the information that you need. After reading the prayer thread, if there's something that you need to be led to, I'm confident that you will find it. My 13 yr. old, just had a pretty negative reaction to vit. C. I was giving him 500 mgs. of Solaray bio-plex buffered Vit C. in addition to what he's getting in the bontech vits (about 250mgs). He got SO acidy. It was really miserable for him. With the removal of the buffered vit. C the acid stomach went away quickly, but the tic it kicked up, is still there, although mild. It's sort of an abdominal scrunch. Lots to take into consideration with high doses of vit C. Hope something here helps. http://vitamincfoundation.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435 Pauling remark on canker and vit. 11. Orthomolecular, Could you tell me what you use to supplement sulfur? Kim
  12. Deanna, There is some info. here on zinc and taurine that you might want to read. http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/articles/walshQZ.htm from Willam Walsh, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, Pfeiffer Treatment Center www.hriptc.org good overview of taurine http://www.angelfire.com/journal2/sadhelp/taurine.htm Since the zinc/copper ratio is important, I was looking at copper, and had this link saved http://www.chemicalbalance.com/copper.htm
  13. Chemar, I'm sorry to hear of more bumps in the road too. Your son will be in my prayers. That young man's experience has been helpful to so many, but enough is enough! Kim I had a look at that chart. Wow, they left some lines out of the song. "The tooth bones connected to the toe bone."
  14. Deanna, This is a site that gives some uncomplicated information on a few supplements. Look at the left hand side of the page and you will see calcium and some other things to check out too. Calcium carbonate, if I remember right, is the one made from oyster shells and can contain lead. I try to avoid that one. http://www.enzymestuff.com/magnesium.htm "Magnesium chelated with amino acids is probably the most absorbable form. Less absorbable forms include magnesium bicarbonate, magnesium oxide, and magnesium carbonate. Magnesium oxide is probably somewhat better than magnesium carbonate (dolomite). The newly available salts of magnesium aspartate or citrate, both known as mineral transporters, have a better percentage of absorption." I'm a little confused regarding the calculations using 4 Bontech vits. They contain equal amounts of Mag. and Calcium. 10 capsules provide 300 mg. of calcium and 300 of magnesium. Something that happened when my oldest son started the vits. when we hit 14, he got hyper. Heart pounding type hyper. I don't think it had anything to do with the calcium or magnesium though. I would more suspect vit. B, or something else. We backed down, and have never went that high again. He is an adult weight and will be 14 soon. You may want to start with 150 mag. and 300 cal for a few days. I have a friend who, when she and her son (13 yrs. old maybe 150 lbs) both started taking 300 mag and 600 calcium, both got diarrhea at that dose. Depending on your son, you may not want that to happen, and have him start rejecting the whole idea. Working up to 600 cal. and 300 mag, seems reasonable to me too. The form of mag. your using does say amino acid chelate. Taurine is an amino acid, however, I'm not sure what others they may use. I'm very big on taurine for my youngest son, since he eats no meat or egg, only small amount which may be found in something like crackers. Maybe do a little reading on taurine. http://www.anyvitamins.com/taurine-info.htm I looked all over for calcium with no carbonate. So many are combos. I just wanted Cal citrate and vit. D. I ended up buying Citracal petites. I needed something coated, for easier swallowing for my youngest son, and at that time, bonnie's vits. didn't contain D. Citracal has some other ingredients like color added, but I could give 200 mgs. without breaking or cutting anything, it was easy to swallow, and it only had cal. citrate and D. After I bought it, the very next shipment of Bonnie's vits, said "with Vitamin D." I'm still using the Citrcal to increase the ratio (since Bonnie's vits. contain equal parts mag/cal) of what the boys get in Bonnie's vitamins, and because they take extra mag taurate, in addition to what they're getting in the vitamins. Zinc is said to be best absorbed taken alone, usually at bedtime. Don't know that it's totally necessary, but thought I would mention it. If you can get your reg. Dr. to test zinc, at some point, it may still be helpful. I'm actually glad you asked your questions here. I like having others give you their input, or have the chance to correct, something that I might get wrong! But you are certainly free to PM anytime too. Kim
  15. Carrie and Rough and Hairy (you give me the best laughs Giselle) Have you guys seen that investment commercial about having a healthy nest egg for retirement? In case you haven't, it has this giant egg in a bunch of scenarios. One, is where it's on a tread mill, connected to a bunch of electrodes. I look at that egg, and think "that's me, minus the big crack" somedays. Raising two boys, that are smarter than I am, is hard enough (a lot of fun too though), but throw a little tempermental ticcy stuff in the mix, and it can get really interesting with TWO of them! Giselle is right Carrie, cut yourself a lot slack! These kids are very resilient and I think well aware of who it is, that would throw themselves in front of a herd of wildebeasts for them! Kim
  16. Carolyn, Honestly that is the WORST problem we have here. You and I have discussed my youngest son's limited diet. We go through the SUGAR struggle daily. I feel btwn such a rock and a hard place with this. I thought he would be worse with tics, when eating sugar. I was linking it to yeast overgrowth. He is better, his whole nature is so much more pleasant when he gets his sugar fix. It HAS to be more of a hypoglycemic type of thing. I just read a post where someone was saying that lithium was prescribed for mood issues, when in fact it was sugar metabolism. Now, our issues are not that bad, but it is really obvious that he functions better, when sugar is not withheld. As long as he is young and so active, he may be able to handle it, but long term, I know this will probably harm his health dramatically. Do you notice feeling better or worse, with cookies?
  17. Deanna, I am using Bontech vits for my boys. According to the dosage chart the suggested use is: 67-89 lb. 15-19 capsules. If I were to start giving these individually, I would start with the calcium (calcium citrate/ascorbate) magnesium (as magnesium taurate), P5P, (bontech contains Vit. B6, but I would use the P5P), Zinc, (my son's had low zinc ...76 for one, 90 for other. According to blood work this was low end of reference range, but considered LOW by other sources) vitamin E (natural, non synthetic), vitamin C (EsterC, calcium asorbate), Vitamin A (as beta-carotene), and vitamin B12. For my youngest son, I would use more biotin than the Bontech vits provide, and I would give, and have ordered vitamin C as sodium asorbate. During an illness, vit C and selenium are looking like good supplements to have on hand individually. You have to be careful with selenium. I would stay on the conservative side with dosage. Also, I would use sublingual B12, which the bontech vits. don't provide. Bonnie's vitamins have many other ingredients like grape seed extract, and other things that I think are helpful, but as I starting point, I think I would go with what's posted above. I'm afraid, by the time you purchase these individually, the cost or the amount of pills are not going to be reduced, but you will have more control. BTW in a full 19 vits, the Bontech vits would provide about 90 mgs. of inositol. When doing individual supplements, the more things you can test (best)/observe (sometimes best we can do) the better chance you have of improvement. For instance, knowing if your dealing with high/low histime levels, candida or bacteria overgrowth, limited diet, etc. You will want to make adjustments to supplements. My youngest son has the flimsiest finger and toe nails! I have noticed that since he was a toddler. Biotin is a supplement that I think is necessairy for him ( a few other reasons for that too) I try to look at my boys as a "whole" not focus on specifically, what might reduce tics. I'm assuming that you have a copy of the ingredients and dosage schedule from the Bontech web site? Feel free to ask any specific question that you think I could help with Kim
  18. Hey Giselle, that's wonderful news. I'm so glad the rain came! Had to laugh about the bubble at Target. All I could think of was those plastic balls that the hamster roll around the kitchen floor in. I could just see the boys running/rolling along, in their ball to school. No way you could get on a bus in one of those things! Kim
  19. Inter2002, You might find some useful information here http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/articles/walshMP.htm About 1/2 way down the page, there is a whole section on OCD and what supplements might be helpful. At the bottom of the page, there are other clickable pages to view. If you are taking any medications, PLEASE check with a KNOWLEDGEABLE Physician, Pharmacist, read your medication insert etc. to carefully check for ANY possible interactions with supplements. Also, I'm wondering if your tics started before, or at the same time as the OCD, or if a medication (if there are any involved) may have brought on the tics? Kim
  20. Giselle/Everyone, I thought of you Giselle, when I started reading this. http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=406983 Doesn't require registration to read, and is just JAM packed with practical information. Pfeiffer is mentioned a couple times in the first couple of pages, including the recommendation for an older book (Carl C. Pfeiffer's book "The healing nutrients within). Don't let the first post throw you. This thread is not about vaccines, it's about nutrients and immunology. Just a little way into the first page, there's lots of info. about cystein, glutathione, , selenium, sulphur, taurine, vit C, magnesium, etc. I hope your baby (I know what you mean about 8 or 80) is doing a little better. Kim
  21. Perfect Carolyn, Thanks so much. I just got on here to edit message, to ask if the kit was free and you could include payment info, when returning sample like other labs do. That mailing info. was helpful too. Kim

No mention of mercury in medicine. CHILDREN WITH AUTISM HAVE DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT IMMUNE SYSTEM REACTIONS COMPARED TO TYPICAL CHILDREN Immunologists from UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute find clear biological component to perplexing childhood neurological disorder May 5, 2005 (BOSTON, Mass.) – A new study by researchers at the University of California, Davis, M.I.N.D. Institute and the NIEHS Center for Children's Environmental Health demonstrate that children with autism have different immune system responses than children who do not have the disorder. This is important evidence that autism, currently defined primarily by distinct behaviors, may potentially be defined by distinct biologic changes as well. The study was released at the 4th International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) – a meeting of autism scientists started by Cure Autism Now, the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute and the National Alliance for Autism Research to accelerate knowledge of this increasingly common and perplexing disorder. It is estimated that autism now affects 1 in every 166 children. "Understanding the biology of autism is crucial to developing better ways to diagnose and treat it," said Judy Van de Water, associate professor of rheumatology, allergy and clinical immunology at the UC Davis School of Medicine and the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute. "While impaired communication and social skills are the hallmarks of the disorder, there has not yet been strong scientific evidence that the immune system is implicated as well. We now need to design carefully controlled studies that tell us even more about the way in which a dysfunctional immune system may or may not play a role in the disorder itself." Van de Water, along with co-investigator of the study Paul Ashwood, assistant professor of medical microbiology and immunology at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute, isolated immune cells from blood samples taken from 30 children with autism and 26 typically developing children aged between two and five years of age. The cells from both groups were then exposed to bacterial and viral agents that usually provoke T-cells, B cells and macrophages – primary players in the immune system. Of the agents tested in the study - tetanus toxoid, lippopolysaccharide derived from E. coli cell walls, a plant lectin known as PHA, and a preparation of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine antigens - the researchers found clear differences in cellular responses between patients and controls following exposure to the bacterial agents and PHA. In response to bacteria, the researchers saw lower levels of protein molecules called cytokines in the group with autism. Cytokines function as mediators of the immune response, carrying messages between B, T and other immune cells. They also are known to be capable of having profound effects on the central nervous system, including sleep and the fever response. Immune system responses to PHA, in contrast, produced more varied cytokine levels: Higher levels of certain cytokines and lower levels of others. According to Van de Water and Ashwood, these studies illustrate that under similar circumstances, the cytokine responses elicited by the T-cells, B-cells, and macrophage cell populations following their activation differs markedly in children with autism compared to age-matched children in the general population. Cytokines are known to affect mood and behavior, and while their specific role in the development of autism remains unclear, the potential connection is an intriguing area of research that warrants further investigation. "This study is part of a larger effort to learn how changes in immune system response may make some children more susceptible to the harmful effects of environmental agents," said Kenneth Olden, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the federal agency that provided funding for the study. "A better understanding of the connection between altered immune response and autism may lead to significant advances in the early detection, prevention and treatment of this complex neurological disorder." He remains steadfastly unmoved and unimpressed by over 200 House members and a unanimous Senate. Without regard to the merits of our bill or the desperate state of our children, he indicated he would not even consider it without passage of his NIH Reform bill—an impossibility this Congress. In the end, his personal legislative agenda outweighed the needs of hundreds of thousands of children with autism. He would only consider a bill devoid of any NIH provisions, including environmental research, and that is unacceptable to the autism community. Let Chairman Barton know how you feel! Call Barton today and let him know that it is unacceptable for our elected officials to put personal, political interests ahead of your sick children! Call Rep. Barton today at 202-225-2002. Keep calling until you get through. Let's jam his phone lines and make ourselves heard. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (IL) has thus far refused to intervene on our children's behalf. His Office of the Speaker website states: "At home we put children first, and Republicans are doing just that in the House". Ask him to back that up and put S.843 on the House suspension calendar! Call Speaker Hastert at 202-225-0600 and ask him to do what's right for children with autism. Majority Leader John Boehner (OH) has been unwilling to stand up to Chairman Barton! Let him know you expect him to show the leadership it takes to do the right thing for hundreds of thousands of children and put S.843 on the House suspension calendar. Call Majority Leader Boehner at 202-225-4000 today and make your voice heard! Our fight is far from over! Call all three representatives today and let them hear the full voice of the autism community. We will speak for our children, because they cannot. Thank you for your support! 24. Giselle I was trying to find this, to include in the last reply. http://www.safeminds.org/legislation/foia/...od_Overview.pdf Where is the up roar in this country? Can anyone read these documents and not question???? You are so right about not being able to go back, but we sure as #### can demand truth, and the right to make decisions regarding our kids health without being SNOWED, so some people can get so filthy rich, they couldn't spend it in a life time (HELLLLP ....the flood gates). You should just see the language in the waiver that I'm supposed to sign for our school district, if I claim a religious exception so my son's won't have to get anymore vaccines. I will file MY OWN, not sign the one they hand you. It pretty much makes it sound like you think it's ok to withhold life saving treatments for your kids, and murder others by jeopardizing herd immunity. There is no mention of the fact that certain individuals can be DAMAGED or DIE from their life saving vaccines. Just one sided BULL. Is there a smiley anywhere that shows duct tape over mouth?
  25. Thanks Giselle, I only wish I was wise enough to understand everything I read. I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to find the root problem(s) involved here. In fact, we have a huge opportunity with this forum to compare notes, and bounce idea's off of one another. Something that I have learned about studies, is that it takes a LARGE amount of people enrolled, to pick up potential problems, that a smaller study might not pick up on. The funding, and issues that the people doing the studies, are willing to look at, may just be too small. If our kids have a problem with vaccines, or a component, we need to know. If they are sensitive to mercury coal emissions, amalgams (by the way, did you see the new article under "articles" about the safety review of silver fillings being rejected?) flouride, soy formula, we need to know. Why are so many of our kids allergic or sensitive to so many things. In regards to the excerpt from the above study, I know my kids were given vaccines, multiple vaccines, when they were at least mildly ill. Do I remember if they had a strep infection within a month of a vaccine, no. I would say it's a pretty safe bet though. I email the lab that Claire ordered the porphyrin test from on Fri. I'm hoping to have the mercury test soon. I have explained to my youngest son, that he is going to need some more blood work. I need to have his zinc level checked, and I'm going to have the ASO DNASE done too. I have never thought of the boys as PANDAS kids, but who knows. It can't hurt to see if he shows elevated levels. If there are any confusing remarks in this post, be sure to ask me to clarify! I have deleted more posts than you can imagine, because I was afraid, I was just going to confuse the hang out of everyone!
