http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/165237/20110618/j-j-recalls-16-000-bottles-of-antipsychotic-drug.htm J&J Recalls 16,000 bottles of Antipsychotic Drug An antipsychotic drug Risperdal and the generic Risperidone have been recalled after a strange odor had been reported by some patients taking the medication. Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc., a unit of Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) on Thursday issued a recall of the drugs voluntarily after the report was taken. Around 16,000 bottles are being recalled. The likely cause of "musty moldy odor/taste" is traces of a byproduct of a chemical preservative which is applied to wooden pallets - 2, 4, 6 tribromoanisole (TBA). The company says TBA is not toxic, but can give bad smell. The company had numerous recall incidents in the past 12 months including recall of Tylenol, Prezista, Topamax, Rolaids Extra Strength Softchews and more which have cost about $900 million in sales last year. The drug is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The recall is said to include just 1 lot of the drugs that was shipped between Augutst 27, 2010 and February 15, 2011. The drug is also approved for the treatment of irritability in children with autism. Below is information about the drug recalled: Reisperdal (risperidone) Tablets - 3mg Bottles of 60 Tablets Lot # 0GG904Expiration date - 05/2012 Risperidone Tablets - 2mg Bottles of 60 TabletsLot # OlG175Expiration date - 08/2012

First, I am so sorry for the friend's passing. This is a hard one. I would have to ask you if/how you explained to Ian what is going on with him. Meaning, if you told Ian he was sick, if you told him it was something with his brain, etc. Knowing this would help decide what wording to possibly use. I would take his lead in how serious the talk needs to be and how much detail is needed.

DD JUST GOT DIAGNOSED WITH PANDAS
thereishope replied to Sheila99's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I'm glad you're finding some answers. In addition to the antibiotics, start to give PROBIOTICS as well (spaced out 2-3 hours from antibiotics). You should also test all other familes for strep too. Even my non-PANDAS kids are asymptomatic. Not all kids are dependent on antibiotic to maintain remission, however, even many of those that can stay well off of them may decide to stay on a prophylactic dose to try to prevent another infection. I hope the Azith helps. Keep us updated. -
The tiny little balls are Pearl brand. Those can also be found probably at the grocery store, Walmart, etc. Many on here give much stronger ones. My non-PANDAS son will take one or two Pearls if he's having stomach issues. My PANDAS son takes a chewable probiotic that I think is 3 billion. Weaker than most on here take, but he's not having any issues, so I think that's fine for him.

Help me wrap my tired head around this please!
thereishope replied to beeskneesmommy's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Have you seen an ENT? Kimballot also has a thread about her son's ENT doing a non-invasive procedure to see if there's inflammation http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=13981 Something to consider asking about when you search for an ENT. btw...that bad sinus infection my son had that I referred to was probably allergy induced. -
Some parents say their kids responded positively to amoxicillin at first then around the two week mark they dramaticaly backslide and symptoms resurface. So, add that to a possible too low dose of Augmentin that the others have suggested and that could be the problem. Before thinking you may be on the wrong track, I would get a higher dose or switch to a different antibiotic (but not amoxicillin again).

thereishope replied to beeskneesmommy's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
It makes me wonder if he may have had a sinus infection? It took two antibiotics taken simultaneously for my non-PANDAS son's sinus infection to go once. First he had Augmentin, then added Azith. If it was a sinus infection, that would explain the allergy like symptoms too. Sinus infections can sometimes only be detected via MRI, not by only looking in it like a doctor does. -
Things to do this Summer?
thereishope replied to Wilma Jenks's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
Have you checked your local park district? Ours offers two "catagories" for the summer. The summer camp, but also individual classes and sports that meet once or twice a week for maybe 4 weeks. I know the classes are smaller numbers of kids and consist age ranges.Your park district may have a wesbite you can search for to get info. -
Normal for symptoms to come and go on ABX?
thereishope replied to tiffany_v's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I agree with Nancy. We saw some return of symptoms as well while recovering. For my son, I would say the worsening of symptoms (when not being induced by another strep infection) would only last for about 3 days then it's like he would reset himself and be back to where he was in recovery prior to the blip. Other things can also cause a worsening of symptoms like stress, exposure to someone else having strep, allergies, viruses. -
Gave Probiotics make her wild
thereishope replied to Wilma Jenks's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
It's also been mentioned that some kids cannot tolerate probiotics in pill form and instead get it through things like probiotic yogurt (not "regular" yogurt, but probiotic yogurt) and Kefir. Also, some probiotics need to be spaced out from antibiotics by 2-3 hours. -

Drug Product Recall Due to Possible Penicillin Contamination http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/743970?sssdmh=dm1.693273&src=nldne fyi...The link to the recall lists may take a bit to load http://aidapak.com/Recall/FDA%20Recall%20List%2020110601.pdf Drug Product Recall Due to Possible Penicillin Contamination Severe Anaphylactic Reactions a Primary Concern June 3, 2011 — A voluntary recall of multiple repackaged products is under way because of a potential cross-contamination of nonpenicillin drug products with penicillin products, according to a safety alert from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Aidapak Services and the FDA notified healthcare professionals and hospital pharmacies of the recall in an announcement this week through the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program. When contacted by Medscape Medical News, Aidapak Services declined to provide an estimate of the number of affected drug products. A spokesperson for the company stated that they did not need to respond to any media questions. According to the alert, there is the "potential for serious anaphylactic reaction in patients with known hypersensitivity to β-lactam or penicillin products that could result from using these recalled products." The FDA recommends that hospitals, emergency departments, clinics, and other healthcare facilities "stop distributing these products immediately and quarantine the products and then contact Aidapak Services for return instructions." In a company press release, Aidapak Services stated that it has instituted a "complete cleaning and decontamination of the facilities followed by testing by 2 separate laboratories to ensure the absence of any penicillin or nonpenicillin β-lactam contaminates." Adverse events or quality concerns related to these products should be reported to MedWatch by telephone at 1-800-332-1088, by fax at 1-800-332-1078, online at https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/medwatch-online.htm, or by mail to MedWatch, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857. The recall list of the affected lot numbers, available on the Aidapak Web site, is more than 300 pages long, indicating that the recall is wide reaching. All products affected by this recall are stamped with Aidapak's packaging stamp.

Case study in psychiatric annals

Thank you do much for sharing this! -
I can say that my son had a refussal to get dressed as well and the screaming too. A 4 year old, as I compare it to the way my kids acted at that age since that's all I have to compare it to (my kids are a ds10, ds7. dd4), shouldn't scream for a half hour straight for that. Maybe a tantrum for 5 min or less but wouldn't go on and on. More than likely your son was given amoxicillin. it's just a guess on my part but that is still the "go to" antibiotics for strep in ped's offices. There is a chance, that it did not clear. Amoxicillin and penicillin both have high failure rates in errdicating strep. I would get him retested. Also, have you seen the list for OCD in PANDAS kids? Maybe look at it and see how much, if any, your child has. Many don't realize what they are witnesing is OCD. Yeah, I just looked...that was fast!

I contacted them and they say they would add PANDAS. Not sure when they'll get the chance, though. I would think they're busy.If someone notices the add, please let us know!

When my son went awhile without eating, he did first turn to more "junkie" food like donuts. He didn't eat non stop, though. As for the pimples, maybe it's not only from the junk but the antibiotics is drawing out bacteria. When people go on antibiotics for acne, your acne actually gets worse for the first few months as it draws out all the bacteria.

AST and ALT liver enzyme tests
thereishope replied to P_Mom's topic in PANS / PANDAS (Lyme included)
I've heard troubled breathing in a few kids, rashes. It may have taken a toll on her for now in terms of her liver, but if you're stopping it, it may correct itself. It may take a few weeks after stopping it. What kind of side effects? It seemed like it didn't do a thing.....except for the possible liver of an alcoholic. -

Bactrim can be a nasty antibiotic in some and can cause side effects. One mom told me Bactrim is a very strong antibiotic and is used to sterilize the stomach or gut prior to surgery. -
I'm so proud of your son and YOU!!!!!! When he gets his diploma today he is representing all of our kids and their ability to overcome obstacles!

“PANDAS and Autoimmunity”-Summary of Dr. Cunningham’s AutismOne Presentation http://pandasnetwork.org/2011/05/pandas-and-autoimmunity-summary-of-dr-cunninghams-autismone-presentation/ If anyone watches any videos and wants to post notes or comments, maybe they could do it via this thread? That way we woud have everything together -
I'm sorry. I hope and pray it gets better soon. In my area, I'm noticing strep has resurfaced. A couple months ago the ped said it was dying out, then all of a sudden it seems like it's back so our kids are fighting exposure as well. In my area, one wonders if the wacky weather we had played a role, it was very odd with the winds, a lot of rain, heat then cold, etc.

We were caught early. Treated with antibiotics about 2 weeks or so after onset. Then the second and third time was treated with antibiotics within 12 hours of onset, however, the extremely fast treatment still got us bad, debilitating symptoms. The second onset, caught within 12 hours of onset was actually worse than the first and we did a 5 day steroid burst with that one which did help with overall recovery. Perhaps the timing of the burst had something to do with it? He was given the burst 5 days after starting antibiotics. The third time, again caught within 12 hours of onset still got us residual OCD to overcome. I should add, though, that he was NOT on prophylactics with any of those exacerbations. Maybe if he was the severity wouldn't have been so bad? No way of knowing. He also had tonsils and adenoids removed a month before the third strep infection/exacerbation. We did not do IVIG.
