Fixit Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 Sorry, I just saw this. We originally got valium through the pediatrician, but once we found a decent psychiatrist, she took over the valium orescribing. But, if you can't get it rx'd, try valerian root...it has a similar effect, just takes more of it. i took valerian last night..i tried it a couple of days ago...i might like it better than melatonin... i slept through the night and didn't wake up....with mel..i still have this 4 hours thing where i wake up 4 huors later...then i might just stay up till morning..though i try to go back...don't want to take another mel because i need to get up in morning... i think i will be call for valium...if the screech is like last night..he we will really need to be more sedated for a while...

philamom Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 (edited) That's great Jill! I'm assuming she's on abx for the procedure? Do keep us posted with the results...was it done with Chop? Uh, no..not CHOP. This ENT is with Temple, but did the deed at Holy Redeemer. He put her on 750mg Amox. and said it could be adjusted if something unexpected shows up from pathology.... I'm not sure what that means. Whatever they send me, I'm sending to Dr. K to make sure she's had the right abx.... and I don't say that to sound like his groupie, it's just that he's been so spot-on-right with my girls when no other doctor has been.. that I'd be a fool not to seek his input as long as he's willing to keep sharing it. Melinda-I'm so pleased that Dr. B has been able to help your daughter. I have a friend at work whose son is suspected PANDAS and they were referred to CHOP. Let's pray that hospital gets there act together sooner rather than later!!! Jill- are you seeing Dr. I? At one time, he mentioned removing my daughter's tonsils/adenoids with a recommendation from a PANDAS doctor even though they didn't appear to be very large. The ENT didn't mention her being on amox during, but she was given a dose in the hospital and the script was for 10 days following. Remember, going into the procedure, this doc thought he was basically taking out "healthy" T & A to help my other pandas dd, but then once he got in there, he saw what a mess they were... ajcire Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 I think it's pretty standard to use iv antibiotics during the procedure regardless. My ENT said it was standard.. he did it for both my pandas and non pandas child.
Fixit Posted September 14, 2010 Author Report Posted September 14, 2010 PLEASE HELP ME Okay my doctor has never mentioned taking the tonsils out! Please HELP. Ds9 was diagnosed with PANDAS 4 weeks ago and has his T&A. Ds6 is showing some symptoms, like memory loss "names of people that he loves", nightmares and so on. Taking him for extensive blood work today. He had his Tubes and Adnoids (sorry for spelling mistakes) out last year. Has had many sinus infections and a few Strep positive. This last one in July is the one that has started all of this. Husband has his tonsils and NEVER gets sick other than sinus problems. Are you all suggesting to your doctors to have them taken out? Should this be done for Ds9, Ds6 and my husband? T&A? Please someone send me your thoughts. I'm very, very concerned for my Son 9's recovery and son 6 getting this disease. Should I have this done before Ds9 is scheduled for IVIG? He's headed that way in about a month or so. Having a conference call with Dr. K, next week. Thank you for any information that you can give. IMHO...i would say yes.. i am getting ready for a big gun too..trying to avoid trust me...but i want my ducks in a row to not have to re-do.. tonsils can become ineffective and the source of recurring infections.. after ds's are out... for my family..i am pushing dh...and will do middle guy as docs always comment on size and condition of ds#2.... too early and too tired but have my eye on ds#3
thereishope Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 (edited) Having tonsils and adenoids removed in a PANDAS child (especially when the reason is PANDAS) is a personal decision. I don't think any doctor have a standard practice of automatically removing tonsils in PANDAS kids. T and A is suppose to reduce the chance of strep, but it is not 100% effective (nothing is). There are some on here who still go on to have chronic strep. There are some on here whose kids got strep rather soon after surgery. There are some who had an exacerbation following surgery. Then there are some who did completely fine and it did help control strep. This is why it is a personal deicison....the results are all over the place. My son had t and a shortly into remission from his second exacerbation. One month after surgery he had strep again and that ended up being his longest exacerbation. In hinsight, maybe I should have waited until he was recovered more. Luckily, that last strep infection post surgery was his last one so far. That was in March 2009. So, did the t and a help? I don't know. For me, I'm glad I did it becasue for my son, I see it as another defense. I had tonsilitis very often as a child and my tonsils still bother me even when they are not infected. So I feel I made the right decision for my son. PLEASE HELP ME Okay my doctor has never mentioned taking the tonsils out! Please HELP. Ds9 was diagnosed with PANDAS 4 weeks ago and has his T&A.
