pixiesmommy Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 We are struggling just to get our family dr to culture us now, and he told us last time we were in that basically we needed to find a new dr. He referred us to an ENT, but we have been down this road already, so are now essentially without a dr to run even a strep test on us. Dr K is local for us but won't treat or culture the family (or even Pixie for that matter) and says to find another dr for that- that he is only for prophylactic and IVIG. I'm at a loss. We read about everyone getting tests for Lyme and family ASO titers, etc and we can't even find someone to swab us??!! Ugh. I feel like we have hit a brick wall here- we can't get rid of strep in the family (and 4 days back at school and Pixie comes home- ALREADY!!- with a strep notice for her grade!) and we can't get anyone who cares why or how we are continuing to deal with this with NO symptoms. Pass it along to the next expert on the list, and then the expert says find a GP. ? Suggestions ??
colleenrn Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 I am so sorry that you and your family are getting the run around from these drs. We did our testing through Dr. T. We did a phone consult and he emailed me the orders to have all the bloodwork done. I took the orders to a lab and they were able to do all of the tests. Why won't your family dr even swab you and your family? Given your history they should be swabbing you whenever you feel you may need to be tested. I can relate to the first few days in school and already there is strep. It was still August and kids at my youngest child's preschool had strep. Suggestions ?? i find walk in clinics very helpful...we have a great one here...and the few times i mentioned pandas no one dismissed me...and actually a couple were intrigued... though i don't know if i would explain the whole pan/pit if you just go in, say there's been cases at school and we are all suseptible..or all feel not right...
KeithandElizabeth Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 Pixesmommy: I would contact the 1-800 ILADS number to find a doctor closest to you who specializes in all of the microbes. These doctors will help your family with your strep issues and they will also search to see if there are other bacterias, etc... that are preventing your family from completely getting rid of the strep. I had a doctor who was cooperative about swabbing but wouldn't prescribe anything other than amoxicillin, even though I had elevated ASO. Through a friend I found another practice where the doctors are a lot more proactive. I would try talking to friends/neighbors and see if you can find someone that way. I am happy with my new doc, they see dh too, so it's good to have us both in one place. I'm even considering switching ds there... She was totally on board with renewing our prescription around the time ds was going to do plasmapheresis. It's not easy, I know. But at least as a grown up, you don't have to transfer records and stuff. You can just walk in there, try them out, and move on to the next practice if that doesn't work. Good luck finding some help! And in the meantime, I agree, try the minute clinic at CVS. We've used them before and they don't question much, although they are limited in what they can prescribe. peglem Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 I don't know why, but I've found that DOs (doctors of osteopathy) tend to be better listeners, more open to learning and better problem solvers than most MDs, so your chances of finding a good doc may be better if you start with DOs.
Suzan Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Hi, I just found out our chiropractor can order labs. He's going to sign our Igenex lab work and then we go to labcorp to get the draw. He said we could go to him for any other testing requests. He's very worried about dd9 and wishes he could help more. Susan
ajcire Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Peg, that is interesting that you said that... we have 5 pediatricians in our practice. I recently noticed that one of them is a DO and I had not idea what it meant so I had looked it up. He is the one in the group who told me that momma's know best and that if a mother comes in to him saying something is wrong and he doesn't see something wrong.. he keeps looking because momma almost always knows. He couldn't help me with pandas but said I wasn't crazy and referred me out when the other doctors there told me that I just needed to use tough love. He is willing to swab them anytime as well.. just wish he was comfortable with prescribing the antibiotics.
