B-Complex makes my son hyper/tics worse

Recommended Posts

I started giving my 8 year old magnesium a couple of weeks ago in an effort to naturally help him with his tics and OCD symptoms. I have also started an elimination diet to see which foods and/or other things he might be allergic to. We have been to our regular Pediatrician as well as a Pediatric Neurologist who suggested we go to a Psychiatrist......so much for that. We are scheduled to begin CBT in a couple weeks but for now, I don't even want to think about medicating my son. Anyway, I recently began giving him a B-Complex (50) vegetable based capsule. I noticed the following day that he had a large amount of energy after being at school and in this Florida heat! And today, he was just downright charged! He could not sit still and generally he is a very calm, relaxed kid (on the outside anyway). I'm thinking it must be to large of dosage of the B-Complex for his body weight/size. As a result, his tics are worse and he can not sit still. I feel badly now as I was sure I had read this amount was okay to give him, but evidently not for his little body. I guess I am just so impatient for him to show signs of feeling better. I am trying to find a Naturapath or Integrated Doctor that our insurance will pay for. Anyway, I just wanted to vent and maybe keep someone else from making the same mistake.

God Bless,

Trish

Hi Trish

I have posted a number of times that my son cannot tolerate B complex (neither can I, nor can my husband)

My son takes needed Bs individually ie. inositol, B12 and P-5-P(B6) and gets the rest of his Bs from a royal jelly supplement as well as his food.

He no longer even takes a multi since the one he was on is discontinued, as he found the same was happening with other multis he tried as with the B complex. So he now takes special teas and incorporates vitamin/mineral rich foods to provide him with those nutritional needs

Thank you for your reply, Cheri. Now that I think about it, I feel awful when I take B complex also but I attributed it to a reaction with the medicine I take. Well this is great news! I bought the L-Tryptophan when I bought the B Complex. I'm wondering if I should let the B Complex get out of his system for a couple of days then try the L-Tryptophan or go get the Jarrows Inositol (does Vitamin Shoppe have this or do I get it from iherb.com)? By the way, I was looking up Dr. Murphy in Tampa and came to the Rothman Center website. They have different studies they are doing posted and several are Tourettes/tic and OCD related. When I went to the list of studies it stated the page was lated updated in May of this year so I'm not sure if it's up-to-date. Either way, I emailed them at the given email address. Here is the link if you don't already know about this:

Thanks again,

Trish

P.S. Would you mind giving me the name of the Naturopath or Doctor that assisted you and your son? I called some around here but since my insurance company does not pay for this anyway, I might as well go to someone that knows about Tics/OCD.

Trish, my son and yours are the same age! I've just recently started supplementing, and am a little apprehensive about things. I hadn't seen the L-Tryptophan mentioned before, although I read a lot about Tryptophan four years ago when my son manifested his first noticeable tic, which resolved before we went ahead with any supplements. Can you keep us posted on what you learn?

Thanks,

Chris
