cleaning teeth w/braces w/o flouride

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My son just got his braces and will add an upper palate expander in a week. His ortho sugguested a concentrated flouride cleaner at nite to clean his teeth as an extra precaution in addition to his regular brushing & cleaning.

We use a nonflouride toothpaste. Is there another cleaner i can use to make sure his teeth are clean? My son is prone to cavities so i really want to keep his teeth as clean as possible.

Thx!

Pat

hi Patty

salt water as a rinse, and baking soda (bicarb) sprinkled on the toothpaste are excellent IMO

also keeping the brush clean in hydrogen peroxide

dilute tea tree oil is also a very good oral antiseptic, as is myrrh

Patty, how is it going with the braces? I always forget how old your son is, too!

As for cleaning the teeth without fluoride: check out The Natural Dentist line of products, they carry both fluoridated and non-fluoridated products and we love the taste. I use an oral rinse that's for gum health and ds loves it if he bites his cheek and creates a sore. It's called Healthy Gums from the Natural Dentist line. Iherb has good prices on this stuff. I also believe there are some rinses that have tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, and other essential oils.

My son just turned 10. We started 2 weeks ago, with spacers and this week w/braces on the upper teeth and will add the expander next week. He does have some discomfort from the braces, otherwise it is good.

Thx for the tips on the dental products!

many of us stay as far away from fluoride as possible because of the noted detrimental effects it seems to have on those with neuro issues, along with other reports on it being bad for overall health.

Patty did say her ortho recommended it as her son is "prone to cavities" so most likely for strengthening enamel

the alternatives we suggested were to help keep the mouth as clean as possible and so hopefully prevent the bacterial action that leads to cavities
