kim Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 I forget, have you had these for your boys? (I know they are older than 11?) Faith, No ok...deleted the rest of my post cause I got on a rant. I will say with our history of staph and skin strep (probable on strep) chicken pox still would freak me out tho
faith Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 thanks Kim, but I'd be interested in the rant.. .....how did you get out of it tho? here, it is mandatory for school, (the Dtap).......
Debbie1 Posted May 7, 2010 Author Report Posted May 7, 2010 Wow, thanks for all of the replies. So much to think about... We did have his titers tested to determine if he is already immune - He was immune to diptheria, low normal for tetanus, not immune to pertussis. If he would have tested immune to all three, I would not even be considering the booster. Thanks again to everyone for all of the information.
mama2alex Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 So he's only lacking immunity to pertussis? Did he have any response at all? We ran into a situation where my ds was immune to diptheria, borderline for tetanus, but no response whatsoever to Pertussis. He was revaxed and later titers were rechecked. Still no response to pertussis at all! So he has no immunity to this despite being fully vaxed. Wow, thanks for all of the replies. So much to think about... Stephanie2 Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 I don't know the rules for all the states, but here in Florida I simply went to the local health dept and told them that I wanted a religious waiver. I was so nervous, I thought they would ask me all sorts of questions about my religion, etc. There were no questions asked, I just had to sign something. I walked out with the waiver and brought it to the school. No questions asked there either. I think the state and the schools are getting used to this... Please don't let the school requirements sway your decision. Don't let a school deadline rush you into anything that does not feel right. Once the damage is done it is very difficult to undo. Mary M Posted May 7, 2010 Report Posted May 7, 2010 My non-PANDAS daughter had a severe reaction post DPT and was hospitalized for observation overnight. No one in the medical community would ever state that her reaction was due to the vaccination but they could never rule it out either. We refused DPT from there and have never again allowed pertussis, whether acellular or not. Our PANDA has never had the pertussis vaccination...based on what I've read here, it sickens me to consider how it may have effected her. I can't imagine her PANDAS any worse.
thereishope Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 I thought if titers showed immunity, you were able to get a medical exemption?
EAMom Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 (edited) Random question: Does anyone know anything about temporary immunosuppression post vaccination (maybe Kim?). Here an example http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal...=1&SRETRY=0 I haven't found much good info. on the topic...but I'm wondering if it's the immunosuppression (or immune-modulation) post-vaccination that is the problem in some kids that develop symptoms post vaccination? For example, if strep (or mycoplasma, or herpes, or any other infection) was present in low levels in the child and then the vaccine causes an immunosuppression and then everything goes out of wack (infection gets worse), causing a trigger in pandas (or autistic) behaviors. kim Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 but I'm wondering if it's the immunosuppression (or immune-modulation) post-vaccination that is the problem in some kids that develop symptoms post vaccination? EAmom, There are many many of us wondering about that and angry that it's we the parents and not the peds that are doing the wondering. I couldn't open your link but this page has some good stuff A couple of examples below http://www.whale.to/v/binstock3.html Auwaerter PG, Hussey GD, Goddard EA, Hughes J, Ryon JJ, Strebel PM, Beatty D, Griffin DE. Changes within T cell receptor V beta subsets in infants following measles vaccination. Clin Immunol Immunopathol. 1996 May;79(2):163-70. PMID: 8620622 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] Measles produces immune suppression which contributes to an increased susceptibility to other infections. Recently, high titered measles vaccines have been linked to increased long-term mortality among some female recipients.... [The following citation reiterates that vaccinations can impair cell-mediated immunity by shifting cytokines release into a Th2 pattern, thereby allowing intracellular pathogens (eg, many viruses) to be more successful. We note that the authors of this 1997 study are trying to devise a way around the general immune-impairing effect of conventional vaccinations.] 4. Martinez X et al. DNA immunization circumvents deficient induction of T helper type 1 and cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses in neonates and during early life. Proc of the National Academy of Sciences 94.8726-31 1997. ab: The relative deficiency of T helper type 1 (Th1) and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses in early life is associated with an increased susceptibility to infections by intracellular microorganisms. This is likely to reflect a preferential polarization of immature CD4 T cells toward a Th2 rather than a Th1 pattern upon immunization with conventional vaccines... Faith, We dodged the bullet because my youngest son was current when records were checked for 6th grade and oldest was current for entry to 9th. We will most likely have to do a religious exemption for youngest next year as he will be a freshman. Entry to Jr. high and high school are the only time they're checked.
