fuelforall Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 My son is sick from PANDAS (or slowly healing, if IVIG has done its work) but the inhalant allergies are killing him right now. Someone recommends HISTAMINE NEUTRALIZATION. What the heck is it? Who does it? What does it involve? Anyone with DAN doctors know? Michael
Stephanie2 Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Never heard of hist neutraization, but maybe that's just a fancy term for using an allergy med? Our DAN recommended using claritin (H1 blocker) and pepcid AC (H2 blocker), which I have not yet started. Also, Reishi mushroom (if you are looking for something natural) tends to act as an antihistimine in my 5 year old. It really helps control his urticaria (chronic hives). Not so sure what it is doing for his pandas, but I did notice an improvement in symptoms when i first started it. fuelforall Posted April 19, 2010 Author Report Posted April 19, 2010 Thanks. How much Reishi do you give?
faith Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 Michael, I don't know what histamine neutralization means, but if you are referring to regulating the histamine response, I'd say poke and search on the TS board for some old posts, there is alot about high histamine being a factor for tics, etc, and some supplements that are aimed at that. sorry, I don't know enough to explain, but search out some posts of Carolyn N., she seemed to have a good handle on that stuff. Faith
kimballot Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 (edited) Is this referring to the provocation/neutralization testing that Dr. Rapp recommends? She does test for allergy to histimine and gives sublingual drops for kids with this allergy. We use the P/N approach and I can share contact information to call if you PM me - if this is what you are referring to. Edited April 19, 2010 by kimballot
Stephanie2 Posted April 19, 2010 Report Posted April 19, 2010 My son is about 50 lbs and I give him 1 Reishi capsule twice a day. He really could use it 3 times a day but I don't want to overdose, if that's possible. It needs to be a good standardized extract. The one I found is called Reishi Max by Pharmanex. It is also supposed to be immune-modulatory, anti-inflammatory and has direct action against strep and staph. A lot of ppl use it for autoimmune conditions. Also supposed to be helpful for regulating bowel movements which it seems to have done in both of my boys (one had constipation, other had diarrhea). ReishiMax Pharmanex 500 mg per capsule standardized to 6% triterpenes and 13.5% polysaccharides 1% cracked spores (whatever that means!) Our DAN also recommended Quercetin, but I haven't started that one yet either... Stephanie Thanks. How much Reishi do you give?
MomWithOCDSon Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 We use quercitin, also, though this allergy season is really doing a number on our whole family. So we recently increased DS13's quercitin to 2,000 mg. daily. DH and I also take 1,000 mg. daily (our allergies aren't at the level that DS's are, thankfully!) He also now takes Zyrtec (over the counter - 10 mg. daily) and a prescription steroid nasal spray (generic for Flonase). It may be a coincidence, but his behavior has improved yet again in the 4 days since we increased the allergy intervention. Originally at 1,000 mg. quercitin and Flonase only, he was still struggling with allergies and all the peripheral impacts, as well. Yesterday was a great day, however, and hoping they keep rolling now!
