Pace2009 Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Hello all, our dd received her P.A.N.D.A.S. dx on April 1st after stumbling around thinking it might be P.A.N.D.A.S. for the past year. In December she went in for her routine cleaning and then again another day for repair of a chipped tooth. A few hours after each visit, she exploded into violent rage, angry, physically aggressive, sweating, etc. This happened more after the cleaning than the tooth repair. We checked all of the ingredients to the various products he used, thinking it was some sort of allergic reaction. We were also thinking of doing without the fluoride next time to see if that helped. I'm wondering now if it has something to do with her P.A.N.D.A.S. Has anyone else seen a strong reaction to dental visits? This forum has already been so much help--thanks!
Fixit Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 yes, we have had exasperation after dental work...a lot of these conditions seem too... we just recently went through this...ds lost filling....cavity black...old mercury type fillng, novacaine???? could be bacteria, the shot in way back close to nerves, mercury, uncomfortable stretcing of those muslces(my mouth hurts with dental cleanings)... i believe there are a couple of threads here regarding it Hello all, our dd received her P.A.N.D.A.S. dx on April 1st after stumbling around thinking it might be P.A.N.D.A.S. for the past year. peglem Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Looking back through my daughter's history, dental work always brought on exacerbations. I'm worried now, because she has an appt. next week for a cleaning/checkup. Her tonsilectomy did the same thing-that was the worse ever. I think its a matter of tissue damage releasing intracellular strep in our case, but that's supposition.

He as cavities that need to be refilled (that want to do caps but I just can't see the point for baby teeth) how do you deal with that? Are your kids normally on ABX when they go to the dentist? Brandy

Brandy Yes, on abx. I deal with it the same as with other exacerbations. I only just put the pieces together last October when she had surgery for an abcess and then cut 4 molars at the same time. Erupting teeth have the same effect, so I know its not dental products causing problems at that point.

This past year, my son (just turned 12) was slowly cutting his molars... took forever, which I think made his eye tics much worse. He just had a baby tooth pulled last week and we put him on 7 days Augmentin... had no problems or flare ups following procedures. Very anxious before the appt.
Phasmid Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Just my theory... during cleaning, many millions of bacteria are released from biofilms coating the teeth, mouth cavity, and gums. Even with spitting most stuff out after cleaning, you can't help but swallow some of the mucous. I wonder if dislodged bacteria which then enter the gut stimulate an immune response, since the gut is where most of our immune cells are found. Again, just a theory, if not just a ponderance. My son, during his last episode, reacted very strongly to dried probiotic in the form of Culturelle as well as the Saccharomyces boullardii. He could tolerate the Kefir, a live active drinkable culture with issue. It was nearly an instantaneous reaction. We could give it to him, and then watch our clock knowing in a matter of minutes it would all break loose, which it did. Also, during teeth cleaning, dental work, there are loads of inflammatory chemicals that get put into circulation. I like your theory...seems like there is some logic to it, especially when you consider other conditions that require preventative antibiotic treatment for dental visits. I also agree that with all of the chemicals used in a single dental cleaning, it's hard to sort through the various factors. It will be interesting at her next cleaning to see how she responds to the next cleaning when she is on antibiotics. He as cavities that need to be refilled (that want to do caps but I just can't see the point for baby teeth) how do you deal with that? Are your kids normally on ABX when they go to the dentist? Brandy One of my biggest regrets is that I allowed a dentist to put mercury amalgam fillings in my childrens' mouths. They should be illegal. You may need to see an adult dentist who can use other materials like ceramics. Some pediatric dentists only use the cheaper materials. It is much easier and cheaper to put the right stuff in their mouths from the beginning than to detox them from mercury and other heavy metals later, not to mention the risks. These silver fillings are toxic and will leach mercury and other heavy metals into their bodies. Mercury can cause all the symptoms of lyme disease in and of itself including neurological problems. A child with PANDAS should definitely steer clear of it. It makes it really hard to get rid of Lyme Disease when you have mercury toxicity b/c the spirochetes hide behind the mercury, evading antibiotics. If your child already has silver fillings I would only get them removed by a biological dentist who can do it safely without harm to the patient. Silver fillings leach mercury everytime you chew and everytime they come in contact with hot stuff. Biological dentists can use ozone to naturally and safely clean any dental infections.
Buster Posted April 15, 2010 Report Posted April 15, 2010 Yes, we had our first significant flair after a tooth extraction when our daughter was 7.5. We thought it could have been B12 deficiency (from nitrous oxide), but we ruled that out. What we think happened was that bacteria colonized in her throat was given immediate pathway to the blood stream. Pace2009 Posted April 15, 2010 Author Report Posted April 15, 2010 So for dental procedures, does anyone add additional antibiotics prior to the visit? She did not have a rage response following her cleaning in June of 2009, but she was on a 2nd round of Flagyl. And before that, she had not had any treatment so each and every day was a rollercoaster with no idea of what caused certain behaviors because everyday was pretty much a bad day for her.
