chodnett Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 I would like to revisit if vaccines had a role in the sudden onset of PANDAS. Any thoughts? I notice flu and chicken pox vaccine were marked a few weeks before step infection and beginning episode.
thereishope Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 I actually started a similar thread about vaccines a bit back. I was curious if vaccines caused exacerbations. If you'd like to view that poll/thread... http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...ic=6155&hl= For my son, he did not receive a vaccine anytime prior to his sudden onset. At one year old, he recieved the chicken pox vaccine and ended up getting the chicken pox rash. I've started a thread about the chicken pox vaccine before as well. if you're interested in reading that one, I'll post it.

PANDAS mom in Nebraska Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 I would like to revisit if vaccines had a role in the sudden onset of PANDAS. Any thoughts? I notice flu and chicken pox vaccine were marked a few weeks before step infection and beginning episode. My daughter had chix pox vaccine and then tics started and OCD/Pandas. My daughter had a severe exacerbation 2 weeks after getting her flu/H1N1 injections in November. I recently did a phone consult with Dr. K in Chicago, who said that this occurs, and that she should avoid immunizations in the first year of treatment to "rest" this process.
jewels Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 My dd had a Measles vaccine and six days later started rapid eye blinking, soaring temp. etc and from then on my dd's life and the families turned into a living nightmare! She had a serious throat infection a few weeks before the vaccine requiring three courses of abx to clear it. On the day of the vaccine the Dr said she was fit and well and ok to be vaccinated. We did give the Dr a history of the constant throat infections and gut problems that she had. The Dr said she would be fine!!!!!!! I don't totally blame the vaccine, but I feel it did tip her fragile immune system over the edge. She regressed badly, lost eye contact, started spinning round and showed some autistic symptoms which thankfully now are a thing of the past. The Drs were very tightlipped when they saw all these symptoms as she was 4 years old and her prior development record showed her to be very bright and above average in all stages. This all happened just as Andrew Wakefield and the GMC had hit the headlines, and we took her to hospital (in the UK) but didn't get any common sense answers, or a dx. If any of my friends are taking their children for the MMR, I always advise them to give their child cod liver oil for vitamin A. for a few weeks before.
jewels Posted February 5, 2010 Report Posted February 5, 2010 Oh, I forgot to mention, one of the drs asked dh and myself what we did for a living. DH was a commercial diver on the oil rigs, and I was a Flight Attentant (long haul for 13 years). the dr said that I could be "Aerotoxic" which affects the immune system! nice! Any other Flight crew in the club?
thereishope Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Here's a thread on how to report adverse reactions to vaccines... http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?...ic=6707&hl=
dee45 Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Anthony is due for chickenpox and tetanus since he will be turning 11 at the end of summer I was just going to let him get tetanus--is that one ok?? Deanna
jewels Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Hi Vickie, Our DAN Dr reported our reactions logging the batch number etc. I think every parent should report anything unusual. The more information the better. Jules
peglem Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Anthony is due for chickenpox and tetanus since he will be turning 11 at the end of summer I was just going to let him get tetanus--is that one ok?? Deanna There have been a few "instances" when my kids needed tetanus shots after injury. No place around here seems to have just the tetanus- it always is combined with diptheria (Td). When I ask about it, they get very huffy! The other thing I wanted to mention, is that tetanus titers are usually tested when you get an immune workup- if you do that you may find that his titers are protective, so you wouldn't need to do the vax in that case.
dee45 Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 thanks I did not know that was is actually included in a immunological workup--Dr. latimer did some things but not that many and we see here in March maybe I could ask her run those as well could you please let me know what to aske for thanks Deanna
thereishope Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 They say they don't have only tetanus? Adults get tetanus by itself. I think you're suppose to get it every 7 years.
peglem Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 They say they don't have only tetanus? Adults get tetanus by itself. I think you're suppose to get it every 7 years. Its been at least 5 years, but no, the only thing they had was the Td, and the adult version had both as well. This was both at the urgent care facility and the emergency room. When I questioned the need for the diptheria part, they said the tetanus wasn't available by itself...but they were, as I said, huffy, so maybe they were just saying whatever to give me the brush off.
ShannonOtown Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Just went to my son's 12 year well check today... I mostly updated them on the past 6 months of pandas symptoms, neuro and immune doctors and appt and where my son is at this point. The doctor wanted to end the visit with the required Tetnus vaccine, which I was total unaware was a requirement for 7th grade. Needles to say I said NO for the time being. He is starting allergy shots tuesday and I don't want to overload his immune system. The doctor understood, but stressed coming back before school start this summer. He had the Pneumovax this past December and only had one bad night.... I guess I'll cross that road when I have to. It is the mixed version they offer.
7upMom Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 New this year in the school system was the requirement for a second chicken pox vaccine shot. I don't care for this at all, but how do you refuse these shots if they are required by the school?
