I have found that ibuprofen really helps my son when he becomes angry/depressed (one of his tell-tale strep symptoms). I have been thinking about trying something like Curcumin or Reishi Mushroom to see if it has a similar/better effect.

Interestingly, my non-pandas son (20 months) recently had RSV and had some wheezing in his chest. When I brought him to the pediatrician, she suggested the nebulizer (xopenex) and prednisolone (steroid). She told me that if the neb didn't work, I should start the steroid for 3-5 days. Well, the neb didnt' help, but I REALLY didn't want to do the steroid, so I decided to try Curcumin first (has anti-inflammatory properties). It may be coincidence, but I gave it to him at night and by the next morning his coughing/wheezing was 95% gone and there was absolutely no reason to start the steroid.

So, I got to thinking that maybe this would work in my 5 year old. I haven't tried it yet. Curcumin tends to have a negative reaction in some kids (hyperactivity, etc...) so I am a little hesitant right now, but I do think I will give it a try eventually.

Also, FYI I hear that Reishi Mushroom can be just as good as a steroid...just anecdotal. I don't have this one on hand, but maybe I will try it sometime...

Oh, also fish oil and vit. D are supposed to be anti-inflammatory (my son does take these daily).

Would love to hear any experience with any of this!

Stephanie,

I can tell you that a couple years ago, I used a DAN doc in order to explore certain avenues for my son (not autistic, tics were the issue), and he did mention that they believe that tics (and I believe autism as well) is an autoimune problem. one of the things he gave us was Circumin. and only because at one point he prescribed a drug called ACTOS, which was supposed to somehow repair the mylien sheath? but this is a diabetes med used off label for this and I was reluctant to use it on him. So the Circumin was supposed to be an alternative more natural way to do it. I never wound up giving it to my son on a regular basis as he only had the pills and I had to crush them up, and it was a mess, because it would stain everything, my hands, the kitchen counter, the pills were just too big. so if you wind up using, make sure your child can swallow pills or get a liquid form.

Also, as far as the ibupropin, I've tried that a few times recently while we are doing Augmentin and I kind of felt it didn't help at all or actually he was ticcing a little more. I am guessing that the children's motrin (grape flavor) with the dyes in it is not a good idea for my guy. I should just try the adult advil, for they are small pills.

They make dye free liquid Motrin. That's what I use.

Thanks for the info on natural inflammatories. I will definitely keep those in mind!

Our son takes Reishi Mushroom every morning. I can't say if the Reishi is helping but our son is about 98% better after IVIG. Dr. K recommended the following excluding Red Reishi. We hope to continue to lower the antibiotic amount as his immune system improves. I initially upped the antibiotic on my own accord because his brother and sister both had been sick twice in the last couple of weeks. I just confirmed the increase with Dr. K and he was fine with the dosage as he recovers.

Morning:

Omega 3, 6, 9 with Vitamin D

Ester C

Vitamin E

Red Reishi

Multi Gummy with Folic Acid

Azithromycin 250 m.g.

Lunch:

Pearls Probiotic

Bedtime:

Kids Calm

Azithromycin 125 m.g.

my son successfully uses a curcumin blended with boswellia for his crohn's inflammation (Boswellin by NOW foods)

in addition to being anti-inflammatory, boswellia is also helpful with OCD

he also uses white willow bark and ginger for their anti-inflammatory properties

We tried a product called Enhansa, which is a Curcumin product. Both my kids had behavioral issues immediately. Our DAN doctor told us that it stirs up yeast for some kids, and this was most certainly the case for us. I have friends who have had success with it though...seems to be good mostly kids who don't have yeast issues. I think you're on the right track with your thinking.

SF Mom,

Thanks very much for forwarding your list of supplements (my son is on similar ones prescribed by the DAN, you can see list in my blog). That is very interesting that Dr. K prescribed red reishi!! I am going to have to give it a try. Also, I see that you give your son Kids Calm. Did you really notice a difference with his ability to fall asleep? My son has some sleep issues right now.

Paula, I have heard of Enhansa, is there anything else in it besides curcumin? I have actually heard that Curcumin kills yeast, so if you were seeing yeasty behaviors it was probably a side-effect of the yeast dieing off! However, I heard that curcumin is very high in phenols which cause hyperactivity and behavioral issues. Oh well, either way you know your kids don't tolerate it. I could see that it made my 20 month old a little crazy, but I still gave it to him for 48 hours b/c it was either that or prednisolone, which has it's own side effects. I couldn't believe how it just knocked the RSV right out of his chest!

Stephanie,

Just to clarify.... red reishi is the only thing Dr. K did not recommend. I added that because of the anti-inflammatory properties and immune boosting... apparently it binds to vitamin C so its recommended to take in conjunction.

I think IVIG helped more with sleeping then Kids Calm and thinking about eliminating.
