Only one piece of advice. Quest is not a walk in lab unless you use their lab to process the blood. They will not help you with Cam Kinase tests. You must get other work done there, then say, "By the way, can you do a couple more vials for me?" and then they will possibly help. Otherwise, you will have to go to a hospital and even then, if your doc is not on the hospital staff, they may not do it.

Fixit,

you don't have to refridgerate the kit, its just empty vials. but you do have to put those two ice packs in the freezer so they will be frozen and ready to go when you mail it back.

I couldn't get my local lab to do the draw when I called to explain, and my ped doesn't draw blood in the office. So what I did was go to MY doctor in person with my little box in hand and explained to the nurse that I was trying to get blood drawn to include my son in a study about tourettes/PANDAS and if the doctor would help me out with a blood draw for I didn't know what else to go. she went in and showed him the papers I had and he said he'd be happy to help. The phlebotomist there did it for us with no charge, altho I offered to pay, but since my son was not their patient, they just did it no charge to not go thru the bother of coding it on my insurance. She spun the blood and just gave me the vial of serum, which I took home and packed and mailed immediately. So try that, then you won't have to explain it all to any of HIS doctors. I did have to work around their schedule but just acted cooperative and even took my son out early from school. at least I got it done. its worth a try. don't call, just go in, they'll have a harder time turning you down in person than over the phone.

My experience was, you'll need a Dr.'s lab request from your Pediatrician, call Quest to find out when that particular location does 'kit draws' and give it a shot. I had to go to two different Quest Lab locations before I found one that would do it.

Your son being sick and on antibiotics should not make a difference in CaM Kinase Results. I would call and explain to your Dr. you need a much longer antibiotic prescription of 30 days plus 'AT LEAST' until you can get results from Cunningham, prove PANDAS for further help. Print the entire published article http://www.pandasnetwork.org/Cunningham.NMpaper[1].pdf and hand that to your Dr.

We did the Cunningham blood draw just over 3 weeks after starting prophylactic Zithromax (10 days at 125mg, then up to 250mg a day). He'd also had 3 days of prednisone about 2 weeks before the blood draw. However, he was sick when we did the blood draw and his PANDAS sypmtoms were worse again (had been better after prednisone). His score was 153.

Also, we had our psychiatrist (the only doctor who really gets PANDAS in our area) write the blood draw order and took it to our local hospital's lab. We were getting a strep test at the same time. Once the lab folks understood that we were participating in a study, they were extremely helpful.

By the way, he tested negative for strep at that time. Hope this is helpful!

My daughter was getting a blood draw fro other things, and I asked if they would draw the extras for me- showed the study materials. My daughter gets blood draws frequently so we have a good relationship with the phlebotomist- I sort of had the idea she was doing it on the sly for me, God bless her!
