ajcire Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Ds is now on daily amox. Should I be giving him acidophilus and if so, does it have to be a certain time from when he has the antibiotic. He takes the amox morning and night.
pixiesmommy Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 I think the wisdom is to give probiotics an hour apart from antibiotics from what I have read. We use Florastor (per Dr Kovacevic) and it is a healthy yeast that can be given at the same time as abx. Pearl is the brand of probiotic that Dr Latimer recommends, but it is more traditional and would need to be given an hour apart from abx. HTH Manda
EAMom Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 I thought it was supposed to be more than an hour apart...more like 3 hours? Also, I don't know if it matters if you give the probiotic before or after the antibiotic.
mama2alex Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I think different doctors will give different opinions on this. I'd say just to be on the safe side, give them as far apart as you can. I give my son some probiotics in the morning and one at night when he wakes up to go to the bathroom and come into our room. This way he's taking them about 3 hours after he eats and 5 hours after his antibiotic (which he takes only at night). He struggled with yeast for years before needing to be on antibiotics constantly, so I am especially vigilant.
Stephanie2 Posted October 9, 2009 Report Posted October 9, 2009 I give my son a regular probiotic twice a day and I also give him S. Boulardii (the strain found in florastor). I give each twice a day, as far away from antibiotics as possible. In fact, sometimes I go into his room and give him some through a syringe while he is sleeping (he gets a little pissed at me, but he does go back to sleep) that way the probiotics are working on his gut all night with no interruptions from food/meds... I can't really say what difference this is making b/c he is also taking diflucan to combat the yeast, but he will be stopping the diflucan soon so I will see if the probiotics keep the yeast at bay... ajcire Posted October 9, 2009 Author Report Posted October 9, 2009 How would I know if he was having problems with yeast?
