thereishope Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 My school just sent home consent forms for giving h1n1 vaccine on school prperty. It is not mandatory, but it still send shivers down my spine. We have a small house, so right now my 8 year old is living in my bedroom. I tell the other kids if they want to talk to him, they can but at the doorway but don't enter the room. Coughs and sneezes can reach up to 6 feet. Luckily, the head of my bed is further than that from the door.
EAMom Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Some folks get H1N1 with minimal symptoms. When my kids were sick in June both dh an I had some lethargy, but nothing extreme, no fever etc. He slept for a day, and I slept for a day (differnt days.)
ajcire Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 EAMom, that is interesting too.. I wonder if we or my other kids did have it and just didn't even realize it. I wish I knew just so that I wouldn't have to worry about it at all now. Ugh, I hope our schools don't start administering it in school... I mean, I know I would have to ok it but I just hope they don't offer it there so that there can be no mistakes about it.
kim Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 erica, Ugh, I hope our schools don't start administering it in school... I mean, I know I would have to ok it but I just hope they don't offer it there so that there can be no mistakes about it. Just wondering why you think you would have to OK it? Is it that you think the flu is more of a threat than the vaccine or that you are thinking that your child wouldn't be allowed to stay in school? You don't have to ok it for sschool attendance at this point. Reading through everyone's remarks, I wanted to say that I almost started my oldest son on a z pac that Dr. sent home with us. He said not to give unless he seemed worse. Yesterday he came home from school early saying that he was coughing so hard that he couln't catch his breath. This morning he seemed ok, but I'm edgy about it. Still think starting the antibiotic might be wise. Strep was negative here too and neither son has had any fever, during the day at least. Maybe low grade that I didn't catch. I posted here somewhere that 50% (think it was 50%) of original H1N1 cases didn't have a fever though, even some of those hospitalized with respiratory problems. I have to wonder if this whole thing is really sound health based treatment, why no confirmed H1N1 cases with swabs at least? I read early on that they should be stock piling anitbiotics instead of vaccines as pneumonia was going to be the real threat. Again, if this was circulating all summer within summer camps and other places that kids gathered in close contact, why wouldn't we be seeing it now, with most schools being back in session for around a month. If what my boys had was not H1N1 and it circulates back to back with this virus, well that scares me. This doesn't seem easy to shake although not that much different than any other respiratory illness. One thing everyone who has had it keeps saying is that the sore throat is an unusally sore throat. Very painful
peglem Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Could it be.....that every person who has tested positive for H1N1, would then not be a vaccine sale? When did I get so cynical?
thereishope Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Elementary will be done in the evening w/ a parent being present. Middle school and high school will be done during school hours. We still need to give a consent form prior to that date saying if we allow it or not. If they were doing during school hours, I would have pulled them out for the day. EAMom, that is interesting too.. I wonder if we or my other kids did have it and just didn't even realize it. I wish I knew just so that I wouldn't have to worry about it at all now. kim Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 Oh peglem now that is just sheer nonsense. ALL of these vaccines are simply for our own health including Gadasil for boys. If you have health issues, YOU ESPECIALLY need all of them! Underlying health problems cause problems with the real deal, but never the vaccine. Now, of course, I can't back that up because none of the vaccine makers want to inject a bunch of sick kids and see what happens, so they just license the vaccine and THEN inject the sick kids. If some have a bad outcome, oh well, we protected the healthy ones. Thihnk you can beat me at cynical??
EAMom Posted October 7, 2009 Report Posted October 7, 2009 This is re. San Jose school district in CA which is going to offer free H1N1 to students. Parental permission is required. San Jose schools are going to give free H1N1 vaccines to students, but parental permission is required. The school district is working in collaboration with Stanford Medical School and Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, Santa Clara County's public health officer, to offer the vaccine in nasal spray and injections at 40 school sites, according to Melinda Landau, manager of the school district's health and family support program. Landau said the school district is in the process of ordering the vaccines and will kick off a pilot program at two schools before branching out. The vaccinations are free, but require permission from parents. "We want to emphasize that this is a voluntary program," Landau said. "We won't do anything without a parent-signed permission slip."
ajcire Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Kim, I just meant I would hate to think they were administering the vaccine during school hours even if I didn't want my ds to have it (which I don't).. I mean I know they wouldn't give it to my ds without my permission but still. I see that the schools are not doing it that way.. sounds like a parent has to be present in the district someone mentioned here. Now totally bizarre coincidence if you ask me but my ds came off the bus today looking totally wiped. He had 101.5 fever. No symptoms at all as of now. I really would have bet money he had h1n1 in June but I guess I am a bit on edge right now wondering how this fever will play out. I will say he sure is mellow and enjoyable to be around despite that...crossing my fingers. erica, Ugh, I hope our schools don't start administering it in school... kim Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Oh erica, I see. I misunderstood what you meant. I get it now. I HATED to see that they are going to give the live nasal vaccine in the schools. They're doing it in stores where food is sold too. Why don't they just shoot it all over the produce too and get it over with?
colleenrn Posted October 8, 2009 Author Report Posted October 8, 2009 Kim- Exactly! If you don't get the flu from someone with the flu coughing on you, you will get it from the live nasal vaccine. Everywhere you go, in the very near future, there will be people who just got the virus shot up there noses and then watch the numbers of cases sky rocket. Colleen
kim Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Colleen, Wondering how your kids are doing? We have been dealing with this illness for going on 2 weeks. Oldest is doing fine, he said his chest feels better. We never did start the antibiotic with him, but now my youngest son is home AGAIN today. He has an enlarged lymph node that's making his whole jaw bone sore. Head cold is still lingering, he's really snuffy. His nose is sore inside and now he's saying his throat feel really dry and a little sore again. I guess that's to be expected with all of the irritation from the cold. I just hate to see him in school with strep and the real possibility of H1N1 all over the place soon. I don't know if head cold symptoms are really associated with H1N1. I'm holding off on the z pac. I'm just not sure what's the right thing to do here.
thereishope Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Have you taken him to the doctor? Colleen, Wondering how your kids are doing? He's pale and has eaten less in the last 3 or 4 days than he normally does (which is always not enough!). I don't know if head cold symptoms are really associated with H1N1. I'm holding off on the z pac. I'm just not sure what's the right thing to do here.
kim Posted October 8, 2009 Report Posted October 8, 2009 Vickie, Yes. He was in Fri. last week. I wanted strep culture done because his throat was so sore, rapid negative. Older son had grown culture that was negative too. He had enlarged lymph nodes at that time. Dr. sent us home with script for z pac and just said to fill it if things weren't improving or worsening. It's so strange how both of them have been up and down from day to day. Both had extremely sore throats, body aches, TIRED in the beginning. Then one day of feeling better, then yucky again. They have both missed quite a few days of school with this. In the higher grades, it's much harder to maintain grades. I miss the elementary days
colleenrn Posted October 8, 2009 Author Report Posted October 8, 2009 Kim- Based on his symptoms, but especially the enlarged lymph nodes with jaw pain, I would definitely start him on the Zpac. My 8 yo son is doing slightly better with his fever, but cough is really horrible. My other 3 kids are not showing symptoms yet, but I am waiting for all heck to break loose any time. I am giving them all oscollococcinum b/c i found out from my nurse practitioner that it can be used to prevent the flu. Even if it does not prevent it, it may help when they get it. Colleen
