faith
Hi all, For those of you who have kids with a vocal tic, is the sound always pretty much the same, or has it changed over time? My son's vocal tic did start as a youngster with some "hmm" sounds, and then sort of giggle that was short lived.....the summer of second grade it quited to sort of a "ck" gargle type sound. Also some squeaks here and there that are short lived. BUT, for the most part, for the past three years, that is second, third, and fourth grade, it has been mostly a "huh" type of vocal clearing or grunting sound. pretty much that is the tic to be reckoned with and it has been his main tic that is always present, sometimes its been better, sometimes worse, but pretty much that sound. I guess almost a chronic vocal tic, if you will. This past August (and this is after my little experimenting with going back to the basics of "no corn and high fructose corn syrup", among some other junk, and doing this mainly because he had a head shaking tic that started in May/June. When things did not really pan out with Dr. Sims and that route, I decided to try back on the diet, and I think I have actually been successful, not totally, but I have been able to get his head shake from moderate (pretty bad) to a more milder (softer and less painful) state, where it doesn't bother him as much as it did beginning of summer. And I want to state here that this is the SECOND time I have tried this particular route of dietary for him because it seemed to help him two or so years ago with the same type of head shake tic, so I guess I am trying to say that I do believe that this does help, and that I am on the right track with the "corn/corn syrup)........ That said....... If anyone recalls during that time (about three weeks ago?) I was questioning a Keebler Vienna cookie that I gave him because I saw that it contained BHT on the label, and shortly after that (hour?) he started going at it again with his vocal, which had slowed down the previous two days after starting him on Acetyl-L-Carnitine (two capsules in the two days). Now he was definitely vocal previous to that, let me make that clear. he didn't go from good to bad. It was sort of "not so good, how much worse could it get?" so I figured giving the carnitien a last ditch effort before school started couldn't hurt. Well since that day of the Vienna cooke and the two days of carnitine (oh and one additional capsule the day after the cookie hoping it might actually help, but it didn't) he has been going at it pretty hard with his vocal. And it has changed to more of a "ehhh" sound, being forced out loudly when he is home, sounds like a toddler exaggerating going to the potty, or maybe some kind of exotic bird letting out a screech. Yikes. I'm dying here. I've had to send him to school like this. I wouldn't be so worried if it was the same sound he always made, which I guess everyone is sort of used to, but this one is more piercing, and more noticeable. His new teacher told me that my son's usual music teacher did comment that is sounded worse than last year (what he was used to). I waited a week, 10 days, two weeks, up til now, hoping it was something (the BHT, the carnitine?) hoping it would calm back down or go back to the usual sound, but no. So what the heck is going on? Is this just one big sad coincidence? I can't think of anything else, except we have been having chriopractic treatments for the last 6-7 weeks, several times per week. Shouldn't things get better? or not help at all? could the chiro work actually make it worse? I have no answers. ..... he is 10 yrs old now and just started fifth grade. So has anyone had the sound change and stay that way? is there any hope here? .... btw, I hve not noticed his voice changing, and he does not seem to be entering puberty yet, so I don't think it is that, but I suppose its possibe, but again, I don't think so. Chemar
Hi Faith my son has had a wide range of vocal tics over the years. They vary in type, frequency and intensity just as the motor tics do. With TS, this is pretty characteristic. The only difference for my son is that in the years since starting his natural treatment protocol, the intensity and frequency have reduced. But the tics still characteristically vary
CSP
Faith, OH MY YES!! Son has changed just as chemar's son has changed. I know for sure his vocals went to a high pitched scream after using the carnitine. That did happen twice. I hope this is short lived, I know for my son sometimes these last for months. patty
Faith, Did you treat the cookie w/NAET? Maybe that will bring your son's vocal back to baseline. So sorry to hear about the change in his vocal! Hopefully it will pass soon. Pat
faith
Patty, no, didn't treat. I havn't been back to the NAET yet. Its been three weeks since the increase/change of his sound, ... if it was one of those things, wouldn't we be better by now? I figured I wanted to see if that happened, then I would know more where I stood. so I'm kind of confused. I'm also thinking maybe he is sensitive to something environmental, mold has been on my mind. I know he does kind of go at it while playing down in the basement, but then it could also be because he is alone, or out of earshot. but he does it when friends are here too. So if I opt to try more NAET treatments, I wanted to try mold, and I have to do that on a Saturday, because I can't keep him away from stuff during school. this is maddening. faith
Sometimes I think that when one type tic calms and wanes, than another just gets more prominent. I can't figure why his motor and vocal don't seem to both respond to our methods. The beginning of the summer his head shake was crazy, and after cracking down on corn and corn syrup products, along with drastic reduction of computer games (none really, but he does look at tv), its at least calmed to a softer movement. I have more to go, but perhaps total no screens and removal of bread would help further, ....... but anyway, so then this vocal goes haywire? what the !!???? Okay, what about this crazy idea?..... I feel like giving him corn syrup all day every day so his neck tic gets worse like I know it will, and maybe this worsening of his motor tics will calm the vocal, which is off the wall loud and frequent in the house.............................Yes, I'm just KIDDING..................I think....... I seriously don't get it. I really don't want to be a bummer, but for all I've employed....... We have done about 6 months of NAET from Jan-June, and now going on 8 weeks of chiropractic adjustments with a chiro that does some upper cervical techniques. With all this, I cannot believe my son is actually worse than before these two modalities. What have I done? Is it anywhere possible that he is healing so hard, that this is a reaction, like the storm before the calm?......or is that wishful thinking? CSP
Faith OK, I just PM you so I'll make this short. Be of good courage... after all my son went through with these darn vocals... they will slow down.... remember that when you feel this is getting bad.
