lele Posted January 13, 2010 Author Report Posted January 13, 2010 Thanks! Well, it is a long story. My ds had very mild tics for 2 weeks before we went to China. On the day we drove to airport he had a little bit more tics, but it was ok. When we were told the airplane was delayed since the bad whether, we had to live in Detrio for one day, he started ticcing more and more, and finally non stop ticcing on the way to China even though we were upgraded to first class. After we arrived to my parents' home, he was getting better and better. We took him to see some docor in Bijing and did MRI. No suppliments was added into my sons current regiment. since we did mineral deficiencies or overload test to check Magneium, Zinc, Copper ect (a kind blood test). and all the results are fine. looks like everything is perfect even though he had some really mild tics. Even though there were somedays he had worse tics than the other, but it won't last for 2 days. Maybe I was too busy on shopping and visiting friends to pay more attention on him. His bad ticcs came back and get worse and worse after we came back from China. School started again, his tics back to his regular level. I am thinking really hard to figure it out, but still looks like a puzzle, can't tell any difference in the diet, the only thing I can concern is he has Yoplait yogurt once a day. I am 100% positive of is that stress and illness makes the tics worse. Good and bad stress. he also tics more when he is watching TV and when he's playing a game on the computer. Maybe the pressure from school is the main trigger for him? He keep working on his AR test, even though his AR is 4.5, the top score among the 2nd graders, he spend a lot time on reading everyday, reading makes him excited and he has non stop ticcing. It is really hard to stop him when he start reading. Once he is reading the AR book, he can't stop lifting arms, shrugging shoulders, jerking neck with vocal tic, nose and mouth moving..............more than 10 tics come together, but I have nothing to do to help him but wait until he finish reading, sometimes I even think about maybe the reading is his OCD?? Once he finish reading, tics get a lot better. We ordered the ELISA/Act Basic test from DirectLab, and he has strong reactions with.•Almond •Cottonseed Oil •FD&C Yellow #5 and Methylene Chloride (Dichloromethane). MODERATE REACTIONS with •Peanut •Pepper, Black •FD&C Blue #2 and •Cladosporium herbarum. I have totally no clue with those results. I just update his information and hoping to get some insight
Ama Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Hi Lele, I don't post here much, but just like to add my 2 cents. I have a 8 yrs old son who was dx with OCD tics when he was 4. Over the years he's gotten alot better. Initially I've loaded him up with lots of supplements which seem to cut down his symtoms at the time. For the last couple years, I have cut down on his vitamins as well. I found that after awhile his supplement has not much effect or even seem to have triggerred some of his tics. Nowadays I focus more on providing him a more nutritional diet with no artificial ingredients such as coloring, preservative and flavor. Look at the food labels, stick to those with minimal and basic ingredients. Do you have a health store at your area? You said you give Yoplait yogurt which contains HFCS. you might want to switch to plain yoguit instead and just add honey for sweetness. Avoid food he's allergic to and also watch out for MSG, which is very common in Chinese cooking. If you do all that, I think you should see some result, it sure did for me! Btw, I'm Chinese too. Wishing you luck! Ama
giulia Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 Hi Lele I think the results are good news! My son came out with strong reactions to a couple of dyes, and I found that staying away from ALL food coloring has been GREAT for him (watch out for coloring in medicines for kids, chewable supplements, tooth paste, mouth wash, etc). Also don't heat food in microwave in plastic containers, use glass. Be careful exposing to mold. Avoid ALL foods in the list for 6 mo. All can think of right now...... take care Giulia
lele Posted January 14, 2010 Author Report Posted January 14, 2010 Ama and Giulia, Thank you for your reply, and your suggestions. I am trying really hard to clean his diet now. MSG is not that hard to avoid since we don't eat out so often and we don't use MSG at home, but sometimes it is so hard to get rid of them from foods like salad dressing, Ranch has MSG, ketchup has HFCS, even the bread bought from food store has HFCS.......... Now I try to make everything at home, like juice, Yogurt, cake, cookie, hopefully it will help to maintain his tics. It is so hard to control his stress which was trigger of the tics, he is so easily to get stress, looks like everything can make him excited including reading, field trips, games, I will say maybe it is his anxiety and nervous. Keep fighting with tics, that is all I can do. Lele
Chemar Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 The Newman's Own brand Ranch dressing is delicious and has no MSG or HFCS. I have even seen Newman's salad dressing at WalMart, Target etc as well as Publix supermarkets we get organic Greenwise ketchup that is pure and good at our local Publix and I know Wholefoods has good brands too Publix and WholeFoods also have BlueSky natural sodas with no HFCS or color etc, and lots of healthy cereals, cookies and other ingredients that dont have the garbage in them. I am not sure what other states Publix supermarkets are in, but their GreenWise organic range is excellent and not much more expensive than the "regular" stuff

Chemar Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Hi Lele the health stores make pure breads (wholefoods and Chamberlins plus some of the smaller local stores often carry good breads too) Fresh and frozen there is always the option of making your own bread if possible

lele Posted January 19, 2010 Author Report Posted January 19, 2010 I started the clean diet on my ds again, and looks like his tics get much better. Thanks all for the wonderful suggestions
lele Posted January 29, 2010 Author Report Posted January 29, 2010 Well, I say that too early. From this Monday, my son started a new vocal tic, just like suck in some gas, I will say it sounds like burp but not that loud. It is wired since this noise often come with his shrug shoulder and life arms. Can't figure out what cause this, nothing chhanged on his diet except I add some pecans, walnuts and natural berry jam from WholeFood (no artifitical additives). And looks like he has more other tics as well as this new vocal tic. Just wondering if anyone can give me suggestion. Thanks in advance.
Chemar Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 could be he is sensitive to the nuts lele also it is full moon, first of 2010 so an especially large bright one tonite expected. I have posted before that my son (and others with TS, I have heard) seems to experience waxing with full moon, altho interestingly enough his tics and OCD are pretty subdued at present

Do you think the natural berry jam could have any preservative hidden? Since it was not shown on the label. Thanks for always give me help, Cheri.

Update my ds' new vocal tic looks like the burp liked tic is still ther and coupled with his shrug shoulder, nothing can stop it. Sigh. He has another vocal tic come together with neck jerking, the clear throat. We are trying to figure out what is the trigger of his tics and moving away from the artificial, colored, flavored, modified, preserved additives and eating as whole and organic as possible, but the diet helps nothing. So hopeless.
Chemar Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 lele are you also doing the extra magnesium and epsom salts baths? any other supplements? we really did find it was the combination of treatments that helped most rather than just diet, or just supps, or just clearing candida, mercury and other toxins & /or infections
