Opinions on vaccinations

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I would like to hear personal opinions / experiences regarding your kids vaccinations and PANDAS episodes. You all may remember that my 13 y.o. son is PANDAS and currently doing well on daily antibiotics. I have another son and also a 5 y.o. daughter. My daughter had her 5 year check up yesterday and recieved some of her vaccines. I declined the varivex, but she did get the MMR and DPT. My only concern is the fact that she has always shown some "pre-PANDAS" traits. Mainly that she has seperation anxiety that most people can not begin to understand (except those of you here). She has been like this her entire life. I always thought she would out grow it, but here we are at age 5 and still, she clings to me like a life line. Even her pre-school teacher made suggestions as to what I should tell the school in regards to choosing a teacher for her next year in kindergarten. Still, she is eventually able to go on to school and have a good day, it just takes a while. She has only had strep one time, so really I can't tell if she will react or not.

So, I wondered what you guys thought about the relationship between PANDAS and vaccines. Not trying to open a can of worms or anything. I know every situation is different. I just like to hear of others experiences, good or bad. I never could link my son's PANDAS to anything but the strep, but I think I've heard others say they thought it played a part. Thanks for any input.

I think the vaccines really kicked it up in my son. It was the varicella and pnumococal that really brought out his OCD. After those he was never the same. In fact the DAN! testing showed a very heavy overload of metals and he said it was from vaccinations. He had the strep before the vaccines and the PANDAS was already ignited in him though. JMO. I have been very careful and not given my two year old any live viruses because of her predisposition. She showed signs of neuro delays also. Delayed speech and hyptonia. I didn't know if they were related but decided not to chance it.

I believe the reason my 12 1/2 yo (PANDAS began at age 5) has much worse PANDAS than my younger children is due to the fact that she received all vaccines required at the time (she was born in 1996) except for the 5 year old MMR booster. My younger 3 children have only received polio. I did everything the same with all of them, except for the vaccines.

BTW, I was wondering if anyone watched Law and Order this past Tuesday. I was literally disgusted me b/c there was a mom who did not get MMR for her son, he contracted measles and did fine with recovering, apparently infected an 11 month old ,who died. The thing that made me so mad was that they called the mother who did not get MMR a murderer, over and over again on the show and prosecuted her for murder.

Geez, glad I didn't see that episode!

Anyway, yes, my one son showed his first signs of PANDAS after his kindergarten shots....he suddenly started to stutter, which lasted a few months, then disappeared. Two years later he got strep and developed sudden onset motor tics, adhd.

I have chosen to no longer vaccinate, I personally do believe they have contributed to my boys conditions, whether it be in helping to develope PANDAS, and/or worsening it. dr.K has advised against any further viral vaccines.

Hi Dedee,

No, nothing more specific than "no more viral vaccines."

I was the one who broguht it up actually, because we had already decided we would not vaccinate either child any further because of what we have seen, we just wanted to get his opinion on it. He agreed to it and said it was a wise decision.

My 10yr old dd has had the really important vaccines, however I believe she had a bad reaction to the chicken pox vaccine 2 years ago, and I've decided - no more vaccines. However, the only one I'd like to consider is her next tetnus shot. Has anyone come across reactions to that one?

Best wishes,

Peggy

Peggy,

I just have to share some things for your consideration regarding your concern about tetanus boosting. As always, do your own reseach!

It used to be that a tetanus/diptheria (TD) vaccine was used for boosting every 10 years. Since they have decided that 5 previous doses of any combo of DTP or the newer DTaP isn't enough to confer any long lasting protection from pertussis, they have gone to using the newer vax which supposedly can (magically ?) be safely given every 5 years instead of 10, regarding the tetanus portion anyway. If your daughter is fully vaccinated, she probably received some combo of DTaP at 2, 4, 6, months then again btwn 15 and 18 months, then again around the age of 5. The good news is that the older TD vaccine when drawn from a multidose vial, still contains mercury. The newer DTaP does not, but does contain alum, used to prompt an unnatural immune response. Alum is a known neurotoxin with no long term safety studies looking at the combined amts. used in the current vax schedule. So..this will be her SIXTH vax in this series.

If you consider that the incidence of tetanus was said to be btwn 500 and 600 hundred cases per year, prior to the infant immunization program in the late 1940's, well, it is an incredibly rare disease when considering the size of the population (when you consider the info below, is it really worth it?). I have included some info which is taken from an article talking about the older TD vaccine, but you will see how it talks about reactions being higher in "boosters" given after the primary series. Also, I've included an article which talks about "immunity" possibly being longer lasting than what we're currently lead to believe.

If I'm going to inject an neurologically sensitive person with antigen, metals, and other chemicals, I want to know there is a darn good reason for it. I will never forgive myself for allowing the Hep B birth dose and blindly injecting my babies/kids with every stupid thing that was put before me. Sorry, I start out calm and try to be so objective, but I end up angry most times, so I'm going to shut up now!

Secular Trends in the United States A marked decrease in mortality from tetanus occurred from the early 1900s to the late 1940s. In the late 1940s, tetanus toxoid was introduced into routine childhood immunization and tetanus became nationally notifiable. At that time, 500–600 cases (approximately 0.4 cases per 100,000 population) were reported per year. After the 1940s, reported tetanus incidence rates declined steadily. Since the mid-1970s, 50–100 cases (0.05 cases per 100,000) have been reported annually. The death-to-case ratio has declined from 30% to approximately 10% in recent years. An all-time low of 20 cases (0.01 cases per 100,000) were reported in 2003

NERVOUS SYSTEM

The following neurologic illnesses have been reported as temporally associated with vaccine containing tetanus toxoid: neurological complications14 including cochlear lesion,15 brachial plexus neuropathies,15,16 paralysis of the radial nerve,17 paralysis of the recurrent nerve,15 accommodation paresis, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS),and EEG disturbances with encephalopathy.18 The IOM following review of the reports of neurologic events following vaccination with tetanus toxoid, Td or DT, concluded the evidence favored acceptance of a causal relationship between tetanus toxoid and brachial neuritis and GBS.9,19

and

There is an increased incidence of local and systemic reactions to booster doses of tetanus toxoid when given to previously immunized persons

and

The occurrence of tetanus in the US has decreased dramatically from 560 reported cases in 1947 to a record low of 48 reported cases in 1987. Tetanus in the US is primarily a disease of older adults. Of 99 tetanus patients with complete information reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during 1987 and 1988,68% were =50 years of age, while only six were < 20 years of age. Overall, the case-fatality rate was 21%.2 In 1992, 45 cases were reported of which 82% were =50 years of age.6 The disease continues to occur almost exclusively among persons who are unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated or whose vaccination histories are unknown or uncertain.

A history of systemic allergic or neurologic reactions following a previous dose of DT is an absolute contraindication for further use.2

Adverse reactions may be local and include redness, warmth, edema, induration, with or without tenderness, as well as urticaria, and rash. Malaise, transient fever, pain, hypotension, nausea and arthralgia may develop in some patients after the injection. Arthus-type hypersensitivity reactions, characterized by severe local reactions (generally starting 2 to 8 hours after an injection) may occur, particularly in persons who have received multiple prior boosters.2

Rarely, an anaphylactic reaction (i.e., hives, swelling of the mouth, difficulty breathing, hypotension, or shock) and death have been reported after receiving preparations containing diphtheria and tetanus antigens.

Hi Kim,

I understand completely, I share your views and concerns on this subject. It causes me deep pain that I followed the Pedi's advice, and came to learn that 2 of my daughters vaccines were later recalled... We can't be too careful. I appreciate all the info you posted, and was actually surprised the number of people contracting tetnus each year was so low.

Best wishes,

Peggy

Hi, I am interested in this too-- I have a 1-year-old (in additional to my 6-yr-old with PANDAS) and I am now planning to delay his vaccines.

My two kids are very different-- the 6-yr-old always seemed neurologically sensitive and the baby does not seem like that-- they have different fathers-- but I don't want to take any more unnecessary chances. (Doesn't Dr. K say this is mostly inherited from the mother anyway?)

His one year appointment is Tuesday but until I have done more research I am going to delay any more vaccines. What vaccines do they usually get at a year? I am bracing myself for a big fight with the pediatrician about this.
