Bontech vs. Kirkman vitamins

Hello,

I am new to the forum. I feel lucky to have found it. My daughter is 12 and has suffered with tics off and on since she was about 5. She is currently experiencing one, and it is bothering her a lot, plus it hurts her. I have made several neurologist appointments but I have always canceled them because she gets better by the time the appointment becomes due. Also, I don't want to put her on those medications. When she was in 2nd grade we did see one, and they put her on Risperdol. I never want to do that again. Although it did seem to help, I wish I researched it more. I was desperate though. She also suffers from anxiety and OCD.

I want to start supplements and have been researching. I would like to try Bonnie's, but I have two concerns. the first one is the high B6 content. I have read that some kids don't react well to it. Kirkman's Spectrum multi has less B6 and more B12. The second thing that concerns me with the TS-Plus is one of the ingredients is Soy. Kirkman's vitamins contain no soy. Any opinions on what I should start with? Or should I just go with a magnesium supplement for starters?

I do have one more question that I would like help with. I would like to start her on a magnesium supplement. I have been looking at Kid's Calm. The thing I don't like about that is the orange flavoring that is added. Does anybody give their kids the Natural Calm or other magnesium supplement? I'm of the understanding that the powdered is the best for to use?

Thanks for any help you can offer, I appreciate all opinions. If there was a previous posting with this I apologize. I tried to do a search but could not come up with the info I was looking for.

I would not worry a lot about the Soy. Our son is off the charts on his IGg allergy tests but I did some research on Soy Lecithin and read that even if people react to soy, the lecithin is likely not going to bother them. There is some techinical reason, but if you google "soy lecithin" you could probably have it explained better.

As far as the Calm, it is a great product, there is only natural flavoring in it, but if citrus products are the problem it won't matter.

Thank you for the input on the Soy Lecithin. I just ordered the Kid's Calm online at Amazon. I know it has been posted before but I was wondering if people could share their experiences (good or bad) with Vit. B6....??? That is the only thing holding me back right now from ordering Bonnie's vitamins..Thank you....

Hi bcase,

Welcome, I just wanted to say my son tried Bonnie's at age 12 and he got a rash on his stomach, his tics did increase at the same time. Soy was the only thing I could pin piont as the problem, even though I had heard the same thing about the lecithin.

About the Natural Calm, I do give him that for the same reasons you are concerned. Did not want the flavors. I just had to be on the safe side with him. He was 13 when I started it and he was only about 85lb. He is 14 now and 95lb. I really feel it was the one supplement that helped me get the ball rolling to wean him off risperdal.

I wish you all the best, keep us posted on how she does.

Hi there,

I give my son Magnesium Taurate that I purchase from the Vitamin Shoppe. I wanted to indroduce one thing at a time, and I thougth that Bonnie's vitamins had too much B vitamins. I think the Magnesium Taurate is a good place to start and from what I understand it's the best form of magnesium.

Can't tell from the above post who posted this part, is it Janey?

But I wanted to know about your experience with the mag taurate mentioned from vit shoppe? How long have you used that, and have you had only positive results? any negative reaction? How much do you give, one capsule? Presently I just use a product similar to the natural calm......

Thanks

Faith

Hi bcase,

Yes, we give him a multi, and also 100mg B6, 500mcg B12, 500mg calcium, 50 mg zinc, vit E and selenium. He had some tests and his urine had high outputs of Xanthurenate and Kynurenate, the B6 was the intervention option to help with that. He was very low on B12. new tests showed B12 has come up since we started the B12. Magnesium was also low, that too has come up. The cal/zinc was to keep the Mag/cal/zinc balenced.

I always start out real slow with a very small amount of a new vit. then take about 2 weeks to get him the the dose he needs. I found this helped with increased tics. I introduced a new one each month. I have not given him any thing new since last June when we weaned him off risperdal. I wanted to give his body a long time to recover from that drug. I will start the enzymes soon, maybe Spring break.

I break up the Natural Calm three times a day. He gets 1/2 tsp in the morning, 1/2 tsp after school, then 1 tsp before bed. His total mag. for the day is 410mg.

Hope that helps.

Cheers, C.P.

Are you using the Natural calm for the tics or for ADHD? I was wondering what people are using naturally to help with the staying focused and on task in school, homework etc? How are his tics currently? Have you tried the inostol for the vit b? I am not currently giving a seperate supplement for the B6 or B12. We deal with his having too much dopamine which causes some attention/hyper issues.

Hi Michele,

Oh yes I forgot I did try the 5-htp in Nov. I stopped because it was not helping at all. So I tried inositol. He gets 550mg of that. I was testing OCD, so far it has not changed tics good or bad.

My son does not have ADHD, so I was using N.C. for the tics. His tics still wax and wane. They go from real quiet to some loud vocals at night. He does not screem anymore. My son was given the risperdal as a dopamine blocker, it helped about 50%-75%. I was worried the 5-htp was going to increase dopamine that is the other reason I stopped that.

How old is your son, Michele? My son was what I would call very active from 5-12, he really started to be less active after his diet change. He can still play a game outside all day if he can find someone who will keep up with him, but he also is calmer when he is not playing.

Hi C.P.!

I'm just curious, does your son have any other tic, however minor, since his vocal has calmed down? I ask because my son's vocal is similar to what you describe now, however I have no idea exactly how much he does it in class, but I think its not too much or the teacher would let me know -- but I do notice when his vocal is way down and I am feeling really good about that, then he seems to have the eye twitch. So I wonder if he just changes from one to the other? Now he has stopped the eye twitch, but I feel like I'm hearing more sounds at home.

I struggle with the corn and dairy building up in him and can't be sure of the effects, because he gives me a hard time with compliance on these, so I just limit as much as I can, but I know they are not good.

Only supps I am doing right now (since November) is magnesium drink, probiotics and the methylcobalaimin/folinic acid. I want to try the mag taurate combo mentioned above, and then enzymes, both of which I have on hand but keep chickening out as things are not too bad. (the evil you know is better than the evil you don't know ........... :D ...... you know?

Hi Faith,

He only has a eye tic where he looks up. Not very often tho. I understand about the school thing. I have not had any calls either. Got his report card all B's and one A the teachers all said he is a pleasure to have in class? Go figure?

Yes, I was thinking about having the whole family fast for Lent and give up wheat and dairy just to see. That way he didn't feel like he was being singled out on the food again. Baught buckwheat flour today to make pancakes with. We'll see how horrable they are.

Have to run off to that part time job.

Hi, bcase,

I started the inositol in Jan. It is hard to tell with him because he seems to wax every couple of days, the is starts to wane for a couple of days. Right now he is doing very well. I think that is because football is over, and his finals for school are done. I can say is has not increased any tics.

I don't believe he has OCD, I was trying to see if his vocals were OCD, by using the 5-htp, then inositol. He does not touch stuff or do thing over and over or anything like that. If he didn't have these darn vocals you would not even know he has TS.

Inositol seems like a good choice to start with if OCD is mild.
