Who to see for tic?

JMT

Recommended Posts

My daughter (10 yrs) was diagnosed by a neurologist with chronic tic (her dad had one into college, still has but hardly noticeable). It's a facial tic involving right side of face only (eye and mouth). One neurologist acted like the tic could be suppressed if she wanted to. I find that hard to believe. Another neuro prescribed Klonopin. My question is what other specialties treat tics (allergist?) and how do I find a homeopathic practice (I live in NYC). It's so frustrating because they wax and wane and I don't know why.

Thanks

Hi JMT,

I wanted to welcome you. Glad you are here.

I think faith said she was from NYC so I hope she can help with the Dr. questions.

I was wondering if you have tried anything natural that has been suggested on this forum?

Let us know, so we can be more personal, and not just list off a bunch of things to try, that maybe you have done. Don't want to overwelm you either.

C.P.

welcome to Latitudes/ACN, JMT

we have a pinned thread above with advice on finding medical help

http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=565

Environmental docs are used by some, while most use Integrative Docs and many use DAN docs. Homeopaths, naturopaths and DO docs are also often helpful, depending on the route of treatment you want to follow

Look up any medication that any doctor mentions and see if it was designed to treat what your child has and then look up potential side effects.

Your child has health issues.

Did the doctor check the child's blood to check the amino acid, mineral, vitamin levels?

Did the doctor check for gut yeast infections or delayed food allegies?

Did the doctor check to see if there is an underlying illness like PANDAS or heavy toxic metal poisoning that could be causing the tics?

If not any of the above then how is the doctor practicing medicine?

JMT,

hello and welcome.

May I ask how long your daughter has had this chronic tic? I assume by chronic tic, you mean the same tic always? Have you started the klonopin (or is it clonodine?). Has she ever had any other symptoms?

I am in NY also. If you go into any health food store, they usually have some literature up front. If they have a a little directory called "Natural Pages", that is a good place to start. Otherwise follow the link that Chemar posted, and it will suggest sites to look up. Since you seem at the very beginning of research, have you looked into the book "Tics and Tourettes" in the above topic? You could probably find this at one of your libraries.

Hi JMT & Welcome,

Klonopin is a very strong muscle relaxant, and I'd stay away from it. I'm glad that you found this forum to help you get started on some natural treatments.

Thanks for all this. No the dr. did no tests. She did check for antibodies, which were high. Daughter was positive for strep, she took antibiotics. I am going back to the dr. to ask for these tests. Even if she did inherit this condition, something could be making it worse. Thanks for your help. I'm new so may post reply incorrectly. I'll learn.

I also wondered if some of these inherited conditions were conditions that the other family members were not born with but exposed to as well. It is like Lung cancer, as a bad example, if you do not smoke you will most likely not get it but if you do you may and if someone in your family has had it your odds of getting it is increased. We are exposed to so much these days it is something to think about.

You said she is positive for strept. When did the tics start in relationship to the strept? That is a significant finding.

Dedee

When we were finally told to have a strep test it was several months after the tics started. So there is no way of knowing for sure. After completing antibiotics, the tics got better for a few days, but they really wax and wane from days to weeks. I think I'm going to try natural remedies one at a time to see if there is improvement. Any recommendation on what to start with?

She has had it for 6 months. The fact that her dad had it for three years in highschool (still does it every so often, but rarely), led the dr. to believe it was chronic tic and the fact that she has no other tics. I ordered the "Tics and Tourettes" book. We have started the Klonopin, seems to work a little. The dr. said if the Klonopin did not work, she could take clonodine as well. She started with Tenex, but it made her blood pressure very low, so probably not a candidate for Clonodine. Thanks for info, I'll check out my local health food store.

Jennifer,

I wanted to send you these, because a strong drug (Orap/pimozide )was prescribed for my son by a teaching University Neuro, that I had a lot of faith in. I didn't give him the med and I have been so glad many times since that I made that decision. These things are not always as benign as you're led to believe.

What are the Most Serious Side Effects of Klonopin?

As long as you're fully informed, you are in the best position to weigh the risk/reward for your daughter. I just didn't think that I was given enough info on the drug that was prescribed for my son, and it was only by the grace of God that I didn't give it to him. In hind sight, his symptoms were no where near bad enough to warrant its use, IMHO. :)

There is so much info on this forum, I hope you read read read, ask questions and find the path that is best for your daughter
