Gaba questions

Recommended Posts

I just received my first online order of supliments (Thanks for sharing hte site Chemar!) Now, I was reading through the catalog they sent and stumbled across something called Gaba 500mg. I dont' remember seeing this as a suppliment in regards to TS. But, I do remember people mentioning it for OCD or ADHD. The blurb about the product says this: "GABA is an amino acid related compound that's important for optimum cognitive function and nervous system support. It is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, whic means it regulates neuron activity in the brain and keeps nerve cells from over-firing, which causes anxiety or nervousness." So, isnt' that what TS is (sorta) when your neurons OVER fire? Wouldn't this be beneficial for TS? Or am I getting the same things with my Omega 3-6-9 suppliment? Does anyone use this as well? Any thoughts?

I have only seen GABA in doses of 750 mg. I remember that dose because that is an odd dose. I would doubt the dose you saw was 500 mg. I would assume that there is something about that dose that the manufacturers have discovered but don't know what it is myself.

I use it at night and find that it helps me to fall asleep. Of course I take some other aminos too, not just GABA. But if I don't take GABA I have more sleep latency.

I don't know anything about TS myself, so can't say if there would be any problems or improvements with GABA. I don't think is should cause any problems.

I usually just take one tablet of 750 mg. in the evening.

I would think the omega's are not going to duplicate what GABA might do. But amino acids are a great way to change the neurotransmitters in your brain. I can feel the effect of some amino acids when I first take them. That is the best way to know. Try it out and see. If this is for a child you might want to try cutting the tablet in half at first.

I also like to take glutamine in 1 gram doses a couple of times a day. Glutamine, GABA and glutamate are all in the same category, meaning one can be converted into the other and vice versa in some cases. (In "The Healing Nutrients Within" by Braverman and Pfeiffer it has those three in one subsection. They are related in some way that I can't remember how to explain it right now. But the all have similar structure I guess. )

But glutamine has a special role in that it can give your brain fuel. Glutamate is the one that can be a problem for some people. But glutamine is not a problem. Glutamine is good for healing ulcers and other GI lining damage. So if you find that GABA was something to continue supplementing then you might look into also supplementing glutamine too. These two glutamine and GABA may have some synergistic relationship perhaps.
