Lee101
Hi everyone, just wanted to say how happy I am to have come across this forum. It has already helped so much, not just on questions about ts, but knowing that my thoughts and feelings as a parent are shared xoxo. Our daughter was diagnosed with ts last October, 2 weeks after she turned 9. She has had tics since around age 6 but have progressively gotten worse. She has the typicall eye blinking/ rolling, throat clearing, pulsing, breathing, hand n toe scrunching etc. She started having full body tics in December that can go on for over an hour, and has been recently put on resperadol to help controll these ( though I'm not convinced it helps ). Anyway, lately she has been saying that she feels like yelling and sometimes she wants to say rude words. This confuses me in that if it was a tic wouldn't she just have to do it? I was thinking that maybe these could be compulsions and if so can they turn into tics??? I'm sorry if it sounds like a silly question, I would really appreciate anyone's thoughts and opinions on this;)
Chemar
Hi and welcome yes, tics and compulsions can be linked, termed Tourettic OCD Many people do try to suppress tics, especially ones that are socially embarrassing or that involve things that are considered "bad" ...so I am not suprised she is not just doing the tics but still feeling the urge to eventually tho, a tic will usually out and may manifest in a different way Some therapists discourage suppression of tics, as it can lead to stress and then manifest in a worse way, often more intensely OCD than tic...a generally more acceptable way is to redirect the tic or substitute it...eg finding a sound that is not the bad or rude words but still gives the release with the sound it makes
Lee101
Hi and welcome yes, tics and compulsions can be linked, termed Tourettic OCD Many people do try to suppress tics, especially ones that are socially embarrassing or that involve things that are considered "bad" ...so I am not suprised she is not just doing the tics but still feeling the urge to eventually tho, a tic will usually out and may manifest in a different way Some therapists discourage suppression of tics, as it can lead to stress and then manifest in a worse way, often more intensely OCD than tic...a generally more acceptable way is to redirect the tic or substitute it...eg finding a sound that is not the bad or rude words but still gives the release with the sound it makes Hi Chemar and thanks for your reply;) Have been loooking at the OCD side of Tourette's and the more I reed the more I think this is what's going on at the moment. Not only does she say she wants to do these things, she also repeaters questions over and over, making herself ( and us ) very frustrated. It normally happens in the evening- she gets herself so worked up you can see her getting extremely anxious then angry, after that there's no reasoning with her:( This last week has been particularly difficult. She has had swimming at school for the past 2 weeks, seems either constantly agitated or over exited, and has breakdowns over the smallest thing. In the past 5 nights she has had 3 of her full body episodes ( tht started in December ) , these can last for over an hour and are so exhausting yet after she still can't sleep and Is getting to bed @ around 11. These episodes also seem to be getting more violent as she has the urge to bite things, so she bites her fists or fingers and slap her hands onto her face. The repataive questions and arguing is also off the charts. Sorry, I got a bit side tracked. I have ordered some Epsom salt bath and natural calm . Is there anything in particular that u would suggest for the OCD side of things as I feel kind of helpless in this area and would be open to any suggestions. Thanks again xx Edited March 22, 2013 by Lee101
Cj60
Some of these symptoms seem to suggest that there could also be infection-related health issues. Have you posted on the PANDAS/PANS or the Lyme boards? - Chris
Sheila
Hi Lee101, We're glad you're here, and hope you find the help you need. You say your daughter has had tics for the last few years (sorry to hear this), and they have been worsening, especially since last October. I wonder if you have seen our article on triggers for tics. It caught my eye in your last note that she seemed much worse recently -- and this seems to also be when she started swimming at school. Our organization has heard from parents whose kids have had major reactions to chlorine and other chemicals in pools -- behavioral changes, OCD, and/or tic-related activity--even self injurious behaviors. It is possible she is hypersensitive to a number of things she is exposed to in her daily life. While you look for answers to her condition, please check this article and see if anything rings a bell. http://www.latitudes.org/articles/finding_triggers.htm Sometimes a child has so many symptoms over a long period that it is difficult to recognize triggers, especially when not actively watching for them. Finding triggers doesn't always solve the whole problem--there may be other issues affecting the condition such as nutritional deficiencies or imbalances, a toxic overload in the body, or infections -- but it can definitely reduce symptoms if identified triggers are found and then avoided. You want to protect her body from anything that could be aggravating her nervous system. Chemicals/pesticides, scented products, dust, mold, pollens, animal dander (if allergic to it), dietary issues like food sensitivities or food allergies, and artificial ingredients in foods, are types of things that could be playing a role. Have you noticed any times that the tics seem to get worse, aside from fatigue and stress? (You can think about this after reading the triggers article, OK?) If you like, you can let us know anything you have observed, and we can try to brainstorm for answers with you. Sheila .
